Eruantion felt quite out of his element. He had been to a couple of clubs with his brother, but he was never one much for partying. They always made him feel claustrophobic, and this one was no exception, even though it was nearly empty.

When they sat down at the booth, Amonost hit the small button in the middle of the table. Instantly, the noise of the bass died down. Eruantion raised an eyebrow at his brother, questioning what just happened. His voice sounded very slightly odd when he replied,
"It's noise cancelling technology. They've been using it in night clubs for years. It allows us to be able to talk while they get to listen to that slag." he said, nodding towards the people around one of the dancers.
"Why doesn't it cancel out our voices?" Eruantion asked.
"Our voices are too complex for it to decode. The bass is very consistant and simple." Amonost replied and took a sip of his drink. "WHOOO, that's strong." he said through clenched teeth.

They sat there for a couple more minutes. Eruantion looked around the place, not really sure what to do or say, while his brother sipped his concoction and watched the dancer nearest to them.

"So, shouldn't we be asking around? See if anyone saw anything?" Eruantion finally said, after another minute.
"What? Oh. Right." Amonost flashed a grin. Eruantion suspected he hadn't forgotten at all, and he was just enjoying watching Eru be uncomfortable.
"Where should we start? How do we approach them? You're the social one." Eruantion offered.

Amonost took another sip and looked around at the other patrons. The guy that had been talking to the bar tender was still over at the bar, but the tender had moved on to other things. Amonost tilted his head towards the man.
They both got up at the same time, and walked over to the man sitting alone. Amonost sat right next to him, and Eruantion sat next to Amonost. The man looked up at them and nodded. Amonost did another odd sign, and the man nodded again, hitting a similar button to the one Amonost had hit in the booth.

"What can I do for you?" the man asked. He looked to be an old retired merc. His face was heavily scarred, his hair was silver, and the ring finger on his left hand was missing.

Little Bribes

"Well, my brother and I are trying to find someone. You looked like the type of guy who probably knows a thing or two about what goes on in a place like this." Amonost said, nodding back towards the enterance to the club.
"Yeah, I might see a thing or two on occasion. Though, I do have to say that my memory isn't as good as it used to be. Another drink might help lubricate my memory though, if you know what I mean." the man said, as the corner of his mouth went up a little.

Eruantion reached into his pocket, took out Tape15, and passed it over to the old man. He nodded his head.
"Alright. Who are you trying to find?" His face suddenly very serious, as he took another sip of the drink in front of him.
"Well, we actually don't know. A ship landed here the other day in hangar 42. We are trying to find out who brought it here." Amonost took a sip of his own drink.

The old man stared at the mirror behind the bar, watching the dancer behind him for a long moment. Eruantion started to wonder if he had even heard Amonost, when he finally answered.
"Yeah. I remember when he landed." he said, shaking his head. "He was a young guy, no older than his mid-twenties, if I had to guess. He seemed pretty shaken up and confused." he stopped talking and took another drink.
"Is there anything else you can tell us?" Eruantion asked, leaning in closer, trying to get every detail.
"Well, I didn't talk to him, but I think I saw him talking to the Valsar that wanders around here. He might be able to tell you more, if he can clear his head long enough to remember anything." he paused, "That's all I can tell you, sorry." he finished and hit the button again, the bass suddenly blairing again.

Amonost and Eruantion took the hint, nodded to him and left him alone. This time, it was Eruantion leading the way back out of the club. Amonost was hot on his heels.

Fog of Drugs

"Hey, you!" Eruantion called as they walked down the hall back towards hangar 42. The Valsar was waddling his way in the other direction, and picked up what little speed he could manage when he heard Eruantion holler for him. He breath was labored by the time they caught up with him.
"I know... nothing." he said before they had asked him anything.
"But, you don't even know what we want." Eruantion protested.
"And that matters why?" the Valsar looked confused and turned to leave again. Amonost placed a hand on his shoulder and kept him from going anywhere.
"We're not here to cause trouble. We're just looking for someone that we heard came through here a couple of days ago, and that you might have talked to him."
"I talk to... many of lots of people. I know not of whom you speak. Every face is the same after so many deathsticks. Speaking of which, do you want to buy one?" his eyes widened at the thought of a potential sale.
"We haven't told you who we're talking about yet. And no, I do not want any deathsticks. Thank you." Eruantion said, holding his hand up in a refusal gesture. "It's really important that you try to remember." he finished.

After a moment the Valsar saw that he was not going to make a sale and sighed, lowering his head.
"Alright, who?" he asked, one of his eyes looking off in the direction of the bar, as though he was thinking about trying to make up for the lost sale.
"There was a young man that came in on a ship and landed in hangar 42." Eruantion finally got his question out.

The Valsar's eye that had been looking at the bar, focused on the hangar, then on Eruantion. He suddenly looked nervous, and turned to leave again.

"I know... nothing!" he repeated as his little boots slapped against the hard surface of the floor. Amonost stopped him once again and turned him around forcably.
"You know something, and you're going to tell us." he told the jittery little Valsar before Eruantion motioned for him to take it easy.

The Valsar lowered his head and looked at the floor in front of him again, occasionally looking down the hall in both directions, like he was expecting someone to be watching him.

"You're... not the first one to ask about him." he finally whispered, obviously remembering someone even with the useage of deathsticks.
"What? Who else was asking?" Eruantion asked him, his eyes growing wide with the idea of an impending answer to one of his many questions.
"I no not whom. White human. Tall. Older. Glasses." he replied.

Eruantion nodded, and looked around. Suddenly feeling uneasy as well. After being satisfied that there was no one paying them any attention, he looked back at the Valsar and encouraged him to proceed.

"The one from 42..." he drifted off, his eyes going unfocused. Amonost snapped in front of his face to bring him back. "... said he was called Eruadan Dori--something. Questioned me if I knew of where a neighborhood sat. Said he was looking for his father." the Valsar said as though trying to remember a long lost memory. "Not unlike confused he was."

The blood drained from Eruantion's face when he heard the name. He couldn't grasp the idea that his son really had come to the past for his help, and wound up getting killed.

"Where was this neighborhood?" Eruantion finally asked the Valsar when he realized that he was just standing there staring at the creature.

It took some prodding, but the Valsar finally remembered and told them the directions to it. They thanked him for his time, and let him go. As they were walking back towards the enterance, Amonost turned and looked at him.

"I know that's my neighborhood." Eruantion replied to the unvoiced statement.

Fearful Disbelief

Amonost just kept looking at Eru for a moment, one corner of his mouth pulled up skeptically.

"Alright, we've got things like hyperspace, so things people used to think were physically impossible are possible," Amonost said.

"... Yeah?" Eru said, one eyebrow raised.

"I really don't think time travel is possible," Amonost stated confidently, "And I also don't think they can tell from DNA samples if someone is your son, only if he's related to you. I think the cop was smoking crack and drinking that Deesle guy's Kool-Aid."

"His DNA matched both mine and Nienna's," Eruantion pointed out. Amonost promptly scowled at the floor. "Come on, let's go," Eru said and continued toward the exit. Amonost could tell he didn't want to talk about it anymore right now - probably just waiting until they gathered more information, but he figured the thought that maybe this time travel thing is the truth must be eating Eru up; that maybe, just maybe, his grown son really is dead before he was even conceived.

Amonost felt something uncomfortable in the pit of his stomach at this thought and headed after Eru. They went back to the van and climbed in, Eru taking the driver's seat.

He didn't start the van yet, just stared ahead through the windshield, a thousand yard stare. Amonost stared at him, partly just worried about him, partly curious what was going on in his head.

Eru finally took a deep, rattling breath, exhaled, and started the van. They rode in silence to Amonost's place, where a police cruiser was sitting in the driveway. The engine was off, and something told them it had been there for a while. Eru took deep breaths, telling himself that the police were just there to talk about something and not because his wife had been murdered too. That didn't stop him from nearly running to the door, which was unlocked, and bursting into the living room.

Nienna and the two police officers—Captain Pierce and another they hadn't met before—all jumped in surprise at Eru's sudden entrance.

"Eru, gosh. You scared me," Nienna said. Eru relaxed and immediately joined her on the couch, wrapping an arm around her. Amonost entered a moment later, closing and locking the door behind him.

"Mr. Doriath," Pierce said, reaching over from his lounge chair to shake Eru's hand. Eru accepted his handshake and they both leaned back into their seats before Pierce continued. "We've got an update from the scene of the crime, I thought I should tell you personally. Some of the blood stains on the downstairs walls... they didn't belong to the victim. We're assuming right now that the perpetrator was acting alone, so I'm hopeful about this lead."

"Has the DNA turned up anything?" Eru asked. Pierce immediately shook his head no.

"Unfortunately, we've searched department databases worldwide and come up with nothing," he said regretfully.

"So how does that help?" Eru asked, a little more rudely than he intended.

"Well, if we're lucky..." he paused, took a sip of his coffee, "We sent scans of four different samples of blood to a company on Flistna who can take DNA sequences and construct a rough image of what the person looks like. The process isn't entirely reliable, it's expensive, we usually don't use it, but..."

Eru thought it interesting how much of a personal stake Captain Pierce was taking in this, and he caught from the glint in his eye that he was having the DNA imaging done more for personal reasons than for the department's investigation.
