RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie recalled hearing quite a commotion leading up to the crash of the zeppelin, and the damage was certainly there.

And of course, the man didn't appear to be armed. She was quite adept at hiding weapons on her person though, so the appearance didn't have a whole lot of weight.

Of course, being armed didn't have too much weight either.

She turned to the pilot.

Valerie: I'm pretty sure he's okay. And besides, our other option is walking, what, fifty miles?

The pilot nodded, lowering his shotgun.

Pilot: Well, as much as I hate to leave my plane, it's not taking off any time soon. It's a wonder we didn't plow straight into a rock and get flattened. How much room you got?

Hugo looked at the ruined biplane and said, "They shot up the engine, huh?  That's bad. I can squeeze in two passengers pretty comfortably. If you have luggage or something, we can strap it on the back. And, uh, would you mind telling me what two people are doing flying a little biplane in the middle of the badlands?"

As he was talking, Hugo reached into a toolbox behind the pilot couch and began pulling out various tools and a long hose.

At the question, the pilot looked to Valerie.

Valerie: He just got his pilot's license and I wanted him to take me flying and... we just kept going. It was pretty stupid.

She gave an embarrassed chuckle. As Hugo reached into the toolbox, he couldn't have seen the pilot's brief, puzzled look at Valerie. He brushed it off and changed the subject.

Pilot: Man, are you sure yours can fly? And didn't those pirates have any other planes in the air? I'm feeling a little vulnerable right now.

RE: Fighting Skies

If Hugo noticed the evasive answer, he gave no sign.

"Sure she'll fly, for a while.  But we need to get your fuel into my tank if we want to get anywhere. The other airplanes are main cause of my hurry.  I don't know what you two are doing standing around chatting.  You, lady, get that end of the tube into your fuel intake and use this handpump to siphon."  Hugo threw the loose end of the rubber tube at the biplane, together with a compact pump.

He looked over at the pilot and asked, "You got anything useful in that thing?", nodding at the little plane. "Rocket boosters, flare guns, parachutes, anything?"  Not waiting for an answer, Hugo began adjusting various bolts in the wings and body, tightening straps and noting where the damage threatened to spell disaster.

As he worked, he explained what he thought was happening, "My boss said they had some sort of defense against bandits.  Their continuing radio silence combined with the missing bandit jets can mean very bad news.  That fight is out of my hands, we just need to get ourselves to civilisation."

RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie stopped and gave it a thought before inserting the siphon. Even if he did take the fuel and leave them, they probably wouldn't be any worse off, considering the state of the engine, so she got to work while Hugo talked. The pilot climbed into the plane to gather a few things--a flare gun, a small toolkit, a first-aid kit with half the contents missing, a .38 revolver, a variety pack of granola bars, and a plastic gallon jug labeled "green tea" but filled with water. The shotgun had not left his side.

Hugo mentioned something about his boss and losing radio contact.

Valerie: Boss? Where do you work that's worried about pirates?

She wondered if she should dare ask, but she went ahead with it. The pilot stuffed the guns, granola, and water into a plastic shopping bag and climbed back out of the plane.

Valerie: What's the nearest city, anyway?
Pilot: That would be, uh, Lot 56. But you don't want to go there. Next best place would be Sally.

He set the things on the ground by Hugo's craft, not about to put it all inside so as to be double crossed and all the stuff taken. He turned and headed back over to the plane and pulled four more water jugs out of the gunner seat, setting them over by the other stuff.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo looked at Valerie and answered, "My boss is the captain of the Express dirigible I rode in on.  Without a dirigible to piggy-back on, this 'thopter isn't going to get very far. If the airship hasn't called back by the time we leave, we'll have to go it alone. How far is Sally?"

A few minutes later he gave the whole flyer a big shake.  Satisfied, Hugo put down his tools and looked at the small pile of stuff next to the craft. They were certainly traveling light, these mystery passengers.  He was curious what they were up to, way out in the middle of nowhere in that little bitty plane. Maybe they'd tell him once they were up in the air. Anyway, there seemed to be no need to strap anything on the outside of the plane.

Hugo grabbed a granola bar and tore open the pack.  He eyed the woman, who was just finishing up with the fuel.  "Hey, you about ready?  Let's load up and roll out!  We can probably squeeze this stuff in the back."

Valerie nodded at Hugo's explanation. The pilot tossed the stuff inside.

Pilot: Sally's just about...

He paused to calculate, climbing halfway into the craft in the process. He looked to the sky to determine his orientation.

Pilot: Probably just over 40 kilometers north-northeast. It's only a small airstrip, but... obviously that's not a problem.

He ducked the rest of the way in and strapped in. Valerie followed.

Valerie: Maybe we should go back for your dirigible. It's pretty big and flies pretty high, right? We shouldn't have to get too close to see if they're in trouble. If it looks clear, maybe we can warn them or... get them out of harm's way somehow.

RE: Fighting Skies

The sun was setting on the slope of the volcanic mountain.  Small birds flitted about the rocks, emitting high-pitched calls as they looped and chased insects in the deepening dusk.

Hugo nodded.  "Just 40K?  We can make that in less than an hour.  As for finding my dirigible, the captain was going to park it among those crags and hide until I called the all clear.  We were maybe 30 klicks to the southwest of here when I left them.  I'm not about to double back on the off chance that they're still hiding there.  If they were, they'd answer the radio. I figure we'll go to Sally and regroup, hear if anyone's seen a sign of it.  Then we can come back tomorrow and see what we can find in good light."

Hugo climbed into the cockpit and cranked the engine.  Fortunately it started without a quibble, and with a jolting leap they were off. Aside from the computer, the ornithopter appeared functional.  The sound of the engine and the rushing air through the perforated covering of the 'thopter made communication all but impossible. Soon, the stars came out overhead, and a small patch of yellow lights appeared in the midst of the blackness that was the ground.

Assuming that this was Sally, Hugo switched off the thrust and began a shallow dive. As he approached, the soft green lights of a dirt runway separated from the town lights, and he simply aimed for one of the ends.  Hopefully no one was using the runway this late in the evening.  Suddenly Hugo cried "HOLD ON!*, and with a tooth-shattering shock, he plunked his gear-less contraption down between the lights, skipped once, and skidded to a halt.

"Sorry about that, came in a little fast..."

RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie probed around her mouth with her finger. Satisfied that all of her teeth were there and intact, she removed her seatbelt and climbed out of the craft, followed by her pilot.

Pilot: Well, uhh... Thanks for the ride, then.

He turned and muttered to himself, expressing his disbelief that he lost his plane.

Pilot: Didn't even tell me what you needed way out there.

Valerie ignored him.

Valerie: I don't really have anything to pay you back with. About the only thing of value we had was the plane, and... yeah. Thanks for saving us. I guess it's time to go find a way back.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo got out of the 'thopter and wiped his brow.  "Well, that coulda gone better.  And worse..."

He scanned around, looking for signs of life.  The airstrip was deserted, the control tower (more of a shed, really) dark and closed for the night.  With a shrug, Hugo ignited a flare and placed it end-to-end with another flare on the ground.  Hopefully no one would run into the little flyer while they were gone.

Hugo said, "Let's go find an inn.  Don't feel like sleeping outside tonight. Tomorrow we'll figure out how to get back to a real town. You guys comin'?"

Leaving the actinic red glare of the flare behind, Hugo led the way toward the soft glow of streetlights and late-night shops.
