RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie stood just outside the kitchen door, staring emptily at Hugo. She had already put some canned goods in her overstuffed messenger bag earlier, and was too concerned with what she just did to find some more.

She wanted to blame it on Hugo for going on a rampage in the first place, but knew that wasn't fair.

In the end, it would be less of a problem for them. But just because it was the easy way out doesn't mean it was the right one. She pushed it out of her mind; it was done, and now she just wanted to leave.

She only now realized that Hugo was bleeding out of his shoulder. Her brow furrowed.

Valerie: You're hit. You're bleeding, man.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo shot a baleful look at Valerie.  "Ya, no kidding. But actually I think I got lucky. I can still move it - ow - some."

He decided to toss the nigh-useless blaster that he had been toting for nostalgic reasons. Heavily favoring his injured side, Hugo carried the bag of stuff out the kitchen door and started down the hallway.  As he walked, he remembered that his shirt was in the armory. Did he have an extra shirt in the flyer? He didn't think so, but it wasn't worth going back for.

Valerie could see that there was a matching hole on the back of the shoulder with the ragged look of an exit wound.  It, too, was gushing a disturbing amount of blood, but Hugo managed to keep erect and move without stumbling.  Still, it was obviously just a matter of time before his stamina ran out completely.

RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie scowled.

Valerie: Let's get out of here, then. I can't do much right now, but we need to take care of that.

She offered to take the bag of food before heading down the hall. In a hurry, it didn't take long to get back to the hole through which they'd entered. It was a slight climb over and through the rubble, but she figured Hugo could manage it.

She went up first, poking her head out to look for Mattias. There he sat on the junk, looking bored and with his revolver dangling from his fingers. She made a noise to get his attention. He jolted, then realized it was her.

Mattias: Took you long enough.
Valerie: Well, we had to kill about twenty people.

She turned back and offered Hugo her hand to help him up the debris.

Hugo grunted as he climbed back into the light of day.

Mattias jaw dropped when he parsed Valerie's words, and he almost fell down when he saw the wreck that was Hugo.

Hugo thought about shrugging and making a joke, but every second it seemed to cost more effort to not simply lie down and go to sleep.  With some effort, he made it to the flyer and sat down heavily, plopping the food next to him.

"Phew, I'm getting seriously woozy. Val, get out the medkit and bandage me up. I think I can still fly us out of here and land somewhere out of sight in the obsidian maze downslope."

RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie tugged the med kit out of its space behind the seat while Mattias stared in morbid fascination at the hole in Hugo's shoulder. The swelling and blood made the wound look worse than it was, though the blood loss would be a major problem soon.

The wound was clean and looked like it had somehow avoided any bones. She wouldn't be surprised if the shock had damaged his clavicle or shoulder blade, but miraculously, it didn't look like the bullet had directly hit a bone. As she worked on it, she idly wondered if he could fly this thing with one arm.

It took her a couple of minutes to clean and dress the wound. When she was done, she offered Hugo the medkit.

Valerie: You know more about the medicine in here than I do. You might want to take some painkillers.

She thought it amusing, the thought of both of them doped up and with bloody holes in them.

Valerie: Hey Matt, we need to get you shot next.
Mattias: What?
Valerie: So we can all match.
Mattias: ... I'll pass.

RE: Fighting Skies

When Valerie tried washing the wound, she noticed that besides the ordinary scrapes a man might get when fighting in a cramped airship there were dozens of deep little cuts that were oozing blood.  Tiny slivers of metal were embedded in the skin and it would take a long time to pick them all out.  When she brought them up, Hugo explained that one of the Uzis had exploded about two feet away from him, which is why he only had one bullet hole in him.

"And that's why I think I got off pretty lucky, all told. The bullet couldn't have hit a better place, either."

The only thing to do about the cuts was to clean them and wrap a bandage around the whole torso. Valerie felt relieved to be covering up the horrible scars on his chest as well - in the center was a circle that looked like a scorched steak. Unfortunately the arms were still uncovered, with two fresh wounds to boot.  Mattias just looked and said nothing.

Hugo eyed the medkit dubiously.  "You know what, I think I'll pass.  The painkillers would put me to sleep or a coma from low blood pressure, the only stimulants I have to keep blood pressure up are blood thinners and would prevent clotting, and I'm not sure I'd like the results of that experiment."

With that, Valerie helped him up and they got underway. Take-off went without a hitch, and soon they were soaring above the sharp volcanic glass peaks. Reclining in the pilot's chair made Hugo instantly feel whole again. He asked, "Where to?"

Valerie: Considering they'll be looking for us out of Sally, north of here, and they've got another dirigible coming from the west, we should head south or east.
Mattias: Or... southeast.
Valerie: Er... yeah. I got nothing after that though.

She looked at Hugo's various wounds.

Valerie: You might want to see a real doctor about all that though.

RE: Fighting Skies

"Yeah, maybe. I would if I knew how. But we're in the middle of nowhere, except for a few places where everyone will want to kill us.  Southeast it is, for now.  After that, who knows?"

After flying low and slow for almost an hour they came to a place where a forest bordered a seemingly endless lava flow.  Uneven and unyielding basalt stretched as far as the eye could see, broken only by small tufts of grass.

"Uh," said Hugo, "anyone know where we are? Maybe it's best we land here while we can and get under cover."

RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie pulled the automap they'd taken from the pirates off of the floorboard and took a look. Why they hadn't used it yet, she couldn't determine.

There weren't any location markers in the area, but there were satellite photos. It didn't really tell her anything she couldn't see for herself.

Valerie: Yeah, no idea.

She passed the device to Mattias to get it out of her hands.

Valerie: I guess we can land and see if we can figure out where to go from here with that thing.
Matt: Hang on. Keep going out over that, uh, all that rock. I just want to see something.

It was a few minutes later before he excitedly pointed toward the horizon.

Matt: There!

He didn't need to say anything; they couldn't have missed it. It was some kind of enormous geodesic dome, recessed in the ground, a good quarter mile across.

Valerie: ... Huh. Do we want to get near that thing?
Matt: It's not marked on the pirate automap. It's just in the satellite imagery.
Valerie: What good does it do us?
Matt: Maybe it's some kind of city, hidden in a volcanic wasteland so nobody bothers them.
Valerie: And if they don't want anybody to bother them, what if they shoot us down?
Matt: I dunno.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo just shook his head and said tiredly, "Matt, what is in your head? This isn't some foobing sight-seeing tour."

But now, of course, Hugo was curious.  Curiosity was sometimes a terrible thing, and perhaps especially so when low on blood.

A moment later, he continued, "Maybe it is a city. Or maybe it is a scientific installation. Or maybe it is a secret pirate hideout."

He almost suggested landing to find out, but then he came to his senses, "We'd be pretty stupid to land there, though. Let's head back to the forest."

And he started turning the flyer around to do just that.
