RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie eyed Mattias as Hugo explained the tools and what he'd need to do. Hugo then asked about the pain.

Valerie: I'm fine, but I won't be when he starts digging around my flesh. I'm going to need some local anesthetic.

Mattias had been staring at the tools and appeared to be thinking while they talked. He turned to Valerie.

Mattias: Why am I going to do this? It sounds like he knows what he's doing and I don't.

Valerie shrugged.

Valerie: I didn't specifically mean you need to do it. I was just saying it's not that complicated.
Mattias: Easy for you to say.
Valerie: Is it?
Mattias: I don't know. But Hugo should do it.

Valerie shrugged again.

Valerie: Okay.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo chuckled.  Maybe they were being a bit hard on Mattias after all, it's not like the guy had had the greatest day. "Alright, lie down here, pull your pants down, and I'll fix you up with as little fuss as possible."

While Valerie got comfortable, he got out small vial of benzocaine and filled the capsule of his jet injector.  He said, "Maybe you'll feel better about foregoing that bounty if I told you what a dose of this stuff costs.  Not to mention the damage to my Albatross, hehe."

After wiping away some crusty blood from an area near the wound with a wet cloth, Hugo applied the injector. While it numbed the area, he set to the task of cleaning the wound more thoroughly. When the area was free of blood, the wound looked like a ragged red hole in otherwise smooth pale skin.  The edges were pink and inflamed, which Hugo mentioned with an apology for not giving her time to take care of it sooner.

Now it was time to get down to business.  Mattias had cleaned the pliers with liberal amounts of the alcohol, and without a warning Hugo plunged them straight into the wound as deeply as they would go, following the path of the shard.  Whether by luck or skill he didn't know, but he found it readily and smoothly pulled it out. Tossing the pliers and their cargo on the ground, he grabbed a couple adhesive strips, pinched the wound together, and taped it shut. Then he applied a gauze and called it good.

Sitting back, he realized this was his first human patient. With a smile he said, "Hey, that went alright.  Stay down there for a little while until the glue sets and the blood clots.  Mattias and I will set up camp and we can all finally get some rest."

With some consternation, Hugo realized that a great landing spot made for terrible cover in the night. He turned to Mattias and asked, "Uh, got any bright ideas to that effect?"

Valerie remained quiet and still while Hugo worked. Despite benzocaine being a topical anesthetic, it seemed to be working well enough, and it was over in only a couple of minutes.

Upon asking him if he had any bright ideas, Mattias looked around a bit before responding.

Mattias: There's definitely not much around except some odd rock formations.

An obvious statement, which he realized; just throwing that out there. He looked up to the starry sky and tried to get a bearing on the cardinal directions. He recognized the stars and got oriented. He looked back down and scanned the surrounding area. He made note that the two moons were lighting the place exceptionally.

Mattias: It is bright, but with how rough the terrain is, as long as we stay in shadow, we might be able to look like, well, rocks from the air.

He looked thoughtfully back at the Albatross.

Mattias: But your ornithopter... Well, I do have a gray tarp in my bag. If we can move the 'thopter off to the side and cover it in the tarp, it would help. I don't think it'd quite cover the whole thing, but it's night and it's probably the best we've got.

Hugo shrugged, and said, "I was more worried about where we were going to sleep and have some heat than staying out of sight.  Do you really think anyone's going to be looking over here?  As far as they know, we could have gone anywhere."

He started packing together the medkit, leaving a couple bandages and painkillers out for later.  "Alright, do what you think needs doing.  I'm really really tired.  It's not too cold out, so I'm just going to get this canvas out and crash over here on this soft dirt. You two can sleep in the 'thopter if you want."

Hugo put the medkit away in the pilot's seat again and said, "I do have a hammock for sleeping out, but there's nothing to tie it to..."

RE: Fighting Skies

Mattias frowned as his observations were cast aside. He may be too edgy, or maybe Hugo was too relaxed. The pirates found them in Sally no more than thirty minutes after they got there, and this was basically ground zero. He shrugged it off and determined that even if they weren't, he was going to sleep in the shadows.

He walked around to the other side of the ornithopter and reached inside, digging out the tarp he had mentioned. It would at least soften the bare ground a little bit, and he could cover himself with it if the need arose, though not really for warmth. He also pulled out his shotgun and a box of ammo.

He realized that Valerie hadn't said a word for the past few minutes. He walked back around the 'thopter and saw her still lying there, her eyes closed, coat draped over her like a blanket. Apparently she was already asleep. He wished he could do that. He looked up at Hugo.

Mattias: Yeah, that hammock would be pretty nice, wouldn't it? Anyway, I'll just be... over there.

He pointed to a rocky bank, carefully chosen in his paranoia because, come morning, it would still be in shadow.

Mattias: Night.

And with that, he trudged over there, laid down his tarp, and tried like heck to go to sleep. Never having been much of a camper, it didn't come easy.

Hugo looked at Mattias trundle off into the night.  The man had a point, but it didn't matter so much.  He had taken the tarp and left an empty seat in the 'thopter, so Hugo happily sat down in the pilot's seat, leaned back, and passed out without a second thought.

He had forgotten to turn the wing-light out that they had used to "operate".

RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie awakened bathed in orange light. The anesthetic had worn off and there was a great deal of pain in her leg.

She lifted her head and realized Mircor hadn't even risen; the sky was splashed with purple and orange, but the star was still hiding. She looked up and noticed the lamp hanging from the wing, still bombarding her with light. She wasn't yet awake enough to consider how visible that would be from the air if pirates had showed up. That was Mattias's area of expertise.

She started to climb to her feet, but decided it wasn't worth it. She looked around her immediate area for the medkit; it was nowhere to be found. Then she spotted the bandages and painkillers. She picked out one of the painkiller patches and applied it, then sat up carefully, leaning back against the ornithopter.

She contemplated continuing her climb and trying to reach the light to turn it off, or just going back to sleep right here.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo woke up lightly to a groaning sound.  Slowly he muddled his way out of sleep and became awake.  He thought of Valerie, and leaving her lie on the ground while he sat in the 'thopter.  Why did that suddenly seem like it may have been a bad idea?  Oh yeah, the groan.

He looked back under the wing and was blinded by the bright orange light.  Too sleepy to have much of a reaction, he switched it off and watched the green after-image fade from view.  Behind it appeared Valerie, sitting leaned against the side of the flyer with her head lolling to the side.

Hugo croaked, "Hey Val, you awake?  Want to sit somewhere more comfy?"

RE: Fighting Skies

It was a couple seconds before Valerie lifted her head and acknowledged Hugo. She gave a tired smile in response to his question.

Valerie: Gladly.

The pain had subsided enough that she was able to stand up. She thought about how much she just didn't want to be here, and she could really go for just leaving right now, but Hugo and Mattias most likely wouldn't go for that.

She limped around to the other side of the Albatross, opened the door, and climbed in.

(I have no idea why I had Valerie wake up early. These past couple posts seem pretty pointless. XD)

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo leaned his head back on the seat again and closed his eyes.  A moment later he opened them to bright sunshine and a rumbling stomach.

Lucky they still had some snack-bars.  He hoped they'd find some food in the dirigible wreckage that day.  Not to mention a radio and a navigation unit.  And something expensive he could pawn to recoup the cost of repairing the 'thopter.  Even though it was still very early, Hugo got out and ate a bar.  Only three left now.  Bah.  Hugo felt cranky and quickly ate another.  That left one each for the other two.

With a sigh, he got out his toolset and tried to tune the stupid wings of the stupid flyer.  Sure, this thing was a dream to fly and nothing else could have landed here like this, but this constant maintenance was a huge inconvenience.  "Hold it, Hugo.  This is how the old Hugo felt.  You're supposed to be able to transcend anger and irritation, swallow it and keep it at bay." But no matter how much he tried to lose himself in the flow of work or how much he mentally projected coolness on himself, he stayed angry.

The reasons were obvious.  Just when life was starting to get good and he had a well-paid, skilled, and above all a non-violent job, some stupid bandits come and ruin everything.  And if they hadn't, Hugo realized, a stupid bounty-hunter would have.  And if she hadn't, then he would've walked right into the stupid source of all his problems, Rick Sonny's stupid gang.  Gah, why won't the stupid world leave him alone?  Hugo seethed.

Maybe it was time to accept it.  This is the way the world was.  His life as the "new Hugo" was untenable, a rare dream in a universe of nightmares.  Maybe it was time to go back to how things were, and take Sonny's bounty as the challenge it was intended to be.  A new resolve formed in Hugo's mind, and the calm that he had been seeking finally came.
