RE: Of Spaceport Markets

He waited for Lao-Tzu to finish. "I completed the required circle, the ritual, and preparation in one day." he stated flatly. "My master or teacher if you will left me alone in her house for nearly a week...I don't know what I was thinking but I broke into her study." his eyes seemed full of regret "I...I found many many books on expirimental and theoretical magic, one caught my eye 'Magic Augmentation' I studied it and was sure I was able to pull off the main article the main article was able to increase one's magical potency tenfold."
He sighed "the preparation said that one had to 'strengthen the mind, body, and soul to withstand  the ritual' the process was said to take months I figured I was strong enough. I followed the circle to the letter it was difficult but I pulled it off."

"When I activated the circle I could feel my energy increase rapidly. My...my body couldn't take the strain and it began to be devoured from the inside-out. Luckily Amber, my Master returned home before I was consumed by my own magic. She ran into the circle and linked herself to me and siphoned some  of the energy to herself. Unfortunantly...it was too much for the both of us and it would have consumed us...if not for her knocking over some candles within the circle and smudging some of the chalk lines when she ran to me. The  spots in the circle she broke started firing bolts of raw lifeless energy. unfortunantly one of the bolts struck me and it caused me to black out. When I awoke she had been struck by one as well but it merely grazed her. I had not been as lucky it pierced my side and I felt my energy had changed...it felt like I had a stanger's energy. Not only that but I had terrible reactions to magic other than my own." He paused before finishing

"Well my master was effected in the same way but not as serious just mild discomfort for her she wasn't mad at me for doing this in fact she was almost happy and agreed to continue teachign me. I gave up in fustration and left. You spoke of giving up something of equal value to gain a boon. I gave up my ability to learn magic and be around magic other than my own, to gain power...but what good is power if you don't know how to use it? I've only been able to tap into it once and all hell broke loose... I've learned to silence my magic to offset the 'allergic reaction' if you will. guess my question is...well is there anyway to reverse the curse or remove my magic for good? I don't like having to maintain constant control and be afraid of my own ability." He looked Lao-Tzu in the eye and waited for an answer

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Something about Dante's account sounded off to Lao-tzu.  The recklessness of the student, the negligence of the teacher, the outcome of the catastrophe, and what Lao-tzu had seen of Dante's character, the pieces seemed to fit but had the aspect of a constructed story, a fiction.

It was hard to believe that a student would be so foolhardy as to attempt a complicated ritual on his own in a single day.  Even if he would, it would require extreme irresponsibility in the teacher to produce a student capable of the act without instilling the ounce of wisdom required to stop.  No, even if Dante believed his story, and it seemed like maybe he did, Lao-tzu thought that something else lay behind it.

It was an open question whether it mattered. Dante's malady was undoubtedly a real problem for him, although the control he showed in the workshop had implications that Dante himself was probably unaware of. However, the nature of things derives from their roots, and never has anything flourished when the roots are neglected. Therefore the first order of business would be to separate truth from fiction in Dante's tale.

Lao-tzu was quiet for some time, and then he pronounced, "The key to your problem lies on Meeriad, with the original spells cast and the truth that is hidden there. If you can find a sage who understands the spell, you may be able to reverse or complete the magic that is damaging you.  I lack the specific knowledge necessary to do it myself, and I can tell you that it will be the most difficult thing you have done in your entire life, in more ways than one."

"However, what I can do is devise a block on you in the form of a spell or an enchantment that will effectively cut your connection to magic.  Plenty of people live their lives without magic and you would be just like them.  The choice is yours."

Lao-tzu waited patiently for Dante's answer, acutely aware of loud yelling going on outside.

Raelan, looked after Starcey apologetically. "I'm sorry, I meant to have you keep your eyes closed, and then switch hands so you could feel the energy move, then open your eyes to prove that it wasn't you imagining things... you also have far better control of your energy than I expected. I was expecting a small pool to collect in your palm. I should have warned you."

He sat down against the wall near her, but kept a good three feet, she was a mass of dangerous emotions, and even her love was still red, the animal passion, she needed to feel safe to move on.

"Are you sure you want to pursue magic as hard as you're saying? I will warn you, once you open up to magic you have a whole new layer of difficulties, stresses, and details you have to deal with. The reason I am as far along as I am is because I've spent years, just studying my magic, if I'd had a tutor that understood me it probably would have been quicker. But even now, I'm a traveling mage, I put on shows, and three quarters of my audiences don't believe in magic at all. I'm hoping my inventions will pay off someday and I won't have to do shows."

He shook his head. "But my life at the moment is mostly dedicated to magic. Now you can do the part time way, learn your abilities, and use them more effectively, but to truly develop into a mage you have to dedicate a lot of your life to it. I've probably lost several decades of my lifespan due to all the stress and damage I've put my body through. Probably more because I'm continually accelerating myself to move at the same rate as you humans. I don't mind though, I rather live fuller than longer."

He tried to cover the sting of the racial differences with a semi goofy smile aimed at her instead of looking straight ahead like he had been for the rest of his chat. "I think you may have other priorities in life than just your magic. If you let me, I can try to teach you what I can, for as far, and as long as you want. I will mostly be working around whatever your particular style is, which we will have to learn, but I will do my best if you like."

He was trying not to lay it on too thick, but he didn't have extended contact with people that often. And he couldn't help but to at least try endearing himself to her at least a little. She was rough, and interesting, and it would be truly wonderful to watch how she grew once she felt safe enough to. Like transplanting a plant from a crack in the concrete to fertile ground. The tough plant can grow in those difficult places, but it would thrive when everything gets set aright.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Starcey snorted, and said "Dude, I don't *want* to learn magic. I don't need it, and I don't like it."

She got up.
"Look - my mother apparently has magical powers and has been hiding it from me until I read that letter Lao-Tzu found. She thinks I'm some problem child because my dad was the boss of the mafia on Cerania before he was murdered, and that I need help. I think it's bullcrap."

Starcey looked him in the eyes - Raelan could see the fire still smoldering deep within. "Coming here was a mistake. Sorry to cause you trouble - I should go. I'll go in and thank Lao-Tzu for his hospitality."

With that, she turned, opened the door to the cottage (without knocking), and walked inside.

The door opened and Starcey stalked in, fuming.  Lao-tzu looked over, then looked at Dante and apologized.  "My apologies for the interruption."

The wizard stood up and faced her, looking in her eyes with an unperturbed look.  Whatever happened outside had clearly upset the girl, but he thought it might be useful to seem as if he anticipated the trouble.  While his problems were perhaps more serious, Dante seemed to be in less urgent need of attention, and in any case he could probably use a few moments to think.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Raelan left the detection sphere up, he still had a demonstration to do, and maybe it'd help Lao-Tsu so that some good would come out of this mess.

He smacked himself in the forehead fairly hard with his left hand. "Botched that one, genius... Slag." And he remained sitting where he was, that girl had really surprised him though, anything he said at this point would only do more damage, so he'd just let her go.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

"Sorry for busting in - I should have knocked. I just wanted to say thanks for the tea and food. I think I should go, though..."

Starcey realized she had no idea where she should go. Her plans of using Raelan to get to Cerania seemed impossibly remote. Going home was unthinkable.

Sighing, and looking lost, she continued "It's getting late, though, and I don't know if I want to try getting across these mountains in the dark. The road is, like, terrible and not even paved most of the way here."

Realizing she's awkwardly taking up time in what appeared to be a serious and personal conversation, she clumsily apologized again, left the cottage, and plunked down next to Raelan again.

"Sorry to snap at you just now, but today really stinks," she said, without looking at him.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Lao-tzu followed Starcey out the door and said to her privately, "You're welcome to do what you want, but I'd like it if you chose to stay here tonight.  Today has been hard on you, but perhaps you'll see things more positively tomorrow.  I don't agree with your mother's ways of doing things any more than you do, but I think your mother is right about needing some guidance. Most young people do, if only a sounding board for their own ideas. If you'd like your own space, I can show you to a milking hut that stands empty most of the time; it has a bed and a stream nearby."

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

"I think I saw it on my way in, actually. Just a little way off the path, like a half mile down the way? That sounds pretty nice. I think I'll hang out here for a bit and then head down there for some Z's, if you don't mind."

Starcey needed time to think; but, being an extrovert, she also needed people to recharge and to collect her thoughts. Raelan, aside from his frightening aptitude for magic, seemed like a good guy to chill with at the end of a long day. She just hoped her hot/cold schizoid behavior today hadn't messed things up too bad.

Going home was always an option, of course, but something she really dreaded.

When Lao-Tzu went back inside, Starcey sat in silence, resting her back against the cottage, and hoping to give Raelan an opportunity to express his thoughts. She was strangely thankful he didn't freak out about her reaction to the detection sphere, that Lao-Tzu tolerated her presence (tolerating her teenage antics was generally an unusual trait amongst the elderly on Micc), and that she was, all things considered, well taken care of.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Raelan sat there for a second, and then violated his own decision, she was obviously giving him a chance, and he couldn't risk not taking it. He'd just have to hope the edges sanded themselves with the somewhat apologetic statement that had been forming in his head.

He used his gentlest, voice, but he didn't have to fake the tired, or sadness that seeped in on the edges. "Starcey, I don't know anything about your mother and father, but I can tell you, don't live in their shadow. It doesn't matter what they did or what they think of you. What matters is what you do.

My town kicked me out when I was fairly young. They thought I was dangerous." He Barks a bit of a laugh, remembering today's events. "Maybe I am, but I don't care. I am going to live life as me, no matter what anyone thinks. It took me years living alone to recover from that betrayal." He smiles sadly as he lifts his metallic hand, it apparently was involved somewhere in the recovery process.

"your choices are what will color your life, not your past, be yourself. Don't do, or not do things because of someone else, you just hand control over to someone else if you do."

Despite the fact that he is distinctive, and recognized by his crazy dragon fascinated magic. Raelan seems to be embodied instead by his lost and replaced right arm. "I don't know people very well, I know animals, I know some about mechanics, and some about magic. I'm just not as good dealing with people." The apology was pretty much implied so he didn't say it.
