RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Raelan has no criminal record, least anything more interesting than traffic violations. An unknown background, being that it was almost completely informal, but he is registered as an official cybernetic engineer, and as a traveling showman.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(The file on Lao-tzu says that he is a known mage, a recluse, and that he has had an influence on certain powerful politicians. No known criminality.  Oddly enough it also states that he is dead.)

Lao-tzu was left alone in his little hut. He turned down the shrinking effect so the room was a modest size for a single person, cleaned it, set a fire in the fireplace and made some soup to boil overnight.

Finally he sat down with another cup of tea and pondered the events of the day. Some might call it meditation or mindfulness, but to Lao-tzu it was simply a habit to consider the day in a reflective light and think about what he could learn from and do better, what he could control and what he could not, and how the people around him may have seen events differently.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(OOPS regarding the previous post w/ the wrong user... There's an extensive file on Starcey's parents. Especially her father Rock, her grandfather Ice, and her great-grandfather Pseudo - put together, there's probably a few filing cabinets worth of documents on them. Starcey herself is clean - if your contact has the right connections, she might find she was fined for misdemeanors like vandalism, pickpocketing, and shoplifting - all minor things like cigarettes or gum; also, her psychiatric evaluation after her father's death, which was generally positive, with a note to keep a close eye on her.)

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

He looked over the documents he was mainly interested in Starcey's father's file and Lao-tzu's file onceh e read that Lao-tzu is pronounced dead. Dante ran the possibilities through his mind 'Ghost, I doubt it.'
He now had something on Starcey that he could use as well as Lao-tzu and Raelan even if it was a small thing. Dante was unsure of what to use it for just yet.
He hated himself when he got paranoid but he couldn't help it paranoia kept him alive as an assasin.

Dante admitted that he had problems, probably some deep rooted and serious ones to. He had used drugs before, became an alchoholic, emotionally broke down, you name it he's probably done it. He also admitted that his odd view on things had helped him do his job. Dante has been relativly stable for the past few years but todays events payed a toll on him. Dante sighed as he fell asleep on the cool ground.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(Ok, I figured Dante would respond to the posts about the files on the characters, but I'll jump in with the morning. EDIT - hehe, Dante posted as I was writing this.)

Starcey awoke feeling rested; the first time in ages, it seemed. It was full daylight outside - how long was she out? Didn't really matter!

Ahhh, that fresh mountain air!

Her deep sleep had clarified some of the day's muddy waters. She realized she'd have to be very very careful with these people - the point her mother had made about fear and anger dominating her life was not so far off, very visibly demonstrated by the experience in the magical detection sphere.

As she went through her morning routine - somewhat different from the lack of a faucet or shower although the stream was refreshing - she pondered further.

So, I went here with the intention of getting some form of go-ahead to fly to Ceranea, in a form acceptable to my mom, so she would fund my trip.

But why do I really want to go there? To solve the mystery of my dad's murder? To pick up where he left off? To punish the wicked? Just for kicks, because it would make my mom mad?

I really don't know... maybe some other reason...

Alright, well, I still want to go. So I'll see if I can get Raelan to fly there somehow. He was honest when he said he didn't know about reading minds, so I can game him, if need be. Lao-Tzu, absolutely not - need to be pure of heart when anywhere
near him. And Dante? Still don't know Dante. At all. Which is worrying... but fine. Even if Raelan is going elsewhere, perhaps I can convince him at least to go off-planet with me. That'll make it easier for me to continue on my own way, and it'll be a heck of a lot cheaper from space than from this stupid rock.

As she was drying her hair, deep in thought, she didn't notice Lao-Tzu approach.

"If the long night's rest has left you hungry, there are a few freshly baked biscuits left for you in the cottage, and some tea. Raelan and Dante were as voracious as yesterday, I'm afraid, but I succeeded in saving some muffins for you as well."

Starcey started at his sudden announcement.

"Oh, errrr... good morning," she mumbled, suddenly aware of where she was again, and aware that her stomach was indeed growling.

She followed Lao-Tzu back to the cottage. Inside, she met Raelan and Dante, deep in discussion, with an air of satisfaction at a hearty breakfast, and a cup of steaming tea in their hands.

(If you guys are not in the cottage, deep in discussion about magic, travel, spacecraft, weapons, religion, philosophy, and/or the myriad other subjects a stay at Lao-Tzu's would foster, I'll change my post.)

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Breakfast was a time for peace and a bit more insularity than most meals called for. Stomachs were to be lined with nourishment and fade the dark spectres that loomed at night. Above all, it was a time for deciding what to do during the day.

So Lao-tzu intentionally kept the discussion light and casual nibbled at their bread and sipped their morning tea.  Only toward the end of the meal did he say, "I believe that two of you had a decision to sleep over.  Do you think you need more time, or do you know what it is you want to do?"

He was curious as to what Dante wanted to do about his magical affliction and whether Starcey had sorted herself out somewhat.  Unfortunately, he expected the girl to remain quite stubborn in her plans, although with a seed that might grow into something better.

From the light banter with Raelan, the sage had perceived that she and he had formed some sort of bond, although it was hard to understand exactly what it entailed.  Raelan's influence might do Starcey some good, but it was more likely that Starcey would pull Raelan down with her.

Dante had been pretty quiet, contributing only a joking phrase now and again.  No telling what he would choose.

(if any of ye disagree with Lao-tzu's analysis, tell me!)

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Starcey looked at the others.

Raelan seemed at ease, but Dante began to fidget a little. It didn't really seem like he wanted to talk, so the silence started becoming awkward.

Partially to break the silence, and partially because she didn't want to be pre-empted, she said "well, I've thought about it, and I'd really like to get off Micc and see the galaxy a little. I'm 17, and I've never been off-planet, so I feel a little cooped up. I was thinking Cerania?" and looked around to gauge the reactions of those around her. She very much hoped that somehow - didn't matter how - the question of motives, the reason why she chose precisely Cerania, wouldn't come up.

When she posed her suggestion, she could feel her face flushing. She had forgotten everything about gaming Raelan, left out every semblance of strategy by neglecting to withhold her intentions for the first few exchanges like she normally would - she even forgot to stay in character, the hard-nosed softy everyone loved to simultaneously hate and pity. The night's sleep, the refreshing mountain stream, the easy flow of conversation, the warm tea, and the intimacy of breakfast had lulled her into a completely naïve state, and Lao-Tzu's question came so suddenly. How embarassing... but how would they react?

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(I'm not sure what Raelan would be so deep in conversation with Dante about... no offense, but we don't share many interests. However based on the characters, everything else seems in order. Lao-Tsu's diagnosis fist the character types, but he doesn't know what kind of core Raelan has underneath all that whimsy ^-^ I'm not saying if he's right or wrong.)

Raelan had tried to keep the mood gentle, and let things happen as they would. However, Lao seemed ready to force the issue, and he felt the air tighten like a bowstring. Raelan's attention focused on Starcey because he was more involved in her decision, and had no idea that Dante had one, as Lao couldn't have meant Raelan.

To Raelan the twang seemed to have worked, at least on Starcey. The sudden snap had made her swing early, no one arbitrarily picks a planet like that, and the instant of panic afterwards really gave the opening. He remembered Cerania, the planet of fliers, he wanted to try out his designs there, but not just yet, he wanted marketable models when he did.

"I spent over 180 years before I ever left the planet I was born on, granted a good bit of it was surviving, and learning three different trades... I think if you feel cooped up, you're limiting yourself, it's not the planet, even for non magical types. Now.... Cerania, I remember reading about that planet. I want to go there, but I wanted to finish some of my designs so that I could sell them to pilots when I did." He glanced at Starcey, and he quirked his mouth thoughtfully. "You don't seem like you've taken up piloting, aside from that pretty two wheeled beast of yours." He had to smile and nod appreciation, there as much as it ruined his whole suspicious adult attempt. He was adult, as much as he hated to admit it. He still looked young, and he acted pretty young, and well he did still have a good amount of time left, by human standards. He shook his head, his mind was wandering, it made him feel old. "There just isn't as much of interest on the ground. There are far more interesting places to go. Why there?"

He glanced at Lao-Tsu, hoping he hadn't invaded on a conversation, or jumped some territory. She answered a question he didn't know she'd been asked. And he'd just blurted a response... suspicious adult my butt. He thought he might have been meant to hear this, but then would Lao-Tsu want to pull Dante away? He flushed to match Starcey, Apparently the double snap had caught him too.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Lao-tzu was surprised at Raelan's jumping in after Starcey's frank admission. Perhaps he was trying to protect her by covering her reaction with a bunch of talk?  Whatever the case, Raelan himself seemed equally surprised at himself.

The sage was glad that Starcey had simply said what she wanted instead of trying to somehow twist things to get an advantage, but he guessed that her embarrassment afterward had something to do with that. Still, it was a step forward, and provided an opportunity for positive conditioning.

Lao-tzu smiled and said, "I think a trip is a fine idea, and Cerania a fine destination. If you look beyond the crime problem, the society can be quite charming and the geography as beautiful as it is varied. However, it is quite dangerous..."

Not worrying too much about subtlety, Lao-tzu dropped the hint and waited to see just how Raelan and Starcey would respond.  He hoped that the girl would take the opportunity to simply ask Raelan to take her, but guessed that she would overreact to her earlier flub and try to be extra-clever about it.
