RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Hmm, thought Lao-tzu, being self-taught never stopped anyone from reading books.  For Raelan to have accomplished everything he has literally on his own means he is extremely talented.

Thoughtfully, he said to Raelan, "So you're a wild sorcerer through and through. We shall have a talk about how you do your magic, and I think we will find that it is fundamentally the same, save for the mode of abstraction you've chosen for yourself. We will see..."

"As for your question," Lao-tzu said as he turned to face Dante, "That is something of a difficult thing for me to answer honestly.  Perhaps it is sufficient to say that I have been a so-called wise man on a mountain for a very, very long time. Right now, however, my story is to be with you two."

The old sage smiled, "Your question begs reciprocation. How did you come to be that which you are?"

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

"Ah I see..." he grinned a bit "as for me...well let's see...I was born on Meeriad to a well-off family. I don't know whatever happened to my mom nor my dad but from what I heard I'm half Keifan. Apparantly I've always had an eccentrio personality... some people call it crazy. But due to my parents getting me almost everything I wanted I was very spoiled and generally a brat. When I was twenty I had an urge to join the army. Well..*He laughed a bit* lets just say my spoildness was quickly whipped out of me. I was a talented sharpshooter and I was good at stealth. Because of that I got picked to go on assasination missions from twenty-three ta about twenty-five. I kinda liked the thrill of assasinating people but and I realized how pivotal one death can be. I decided that instead of fighting crime and such through the police and other sources, I would stop crime at it's source...gang leaders, drug dealers, mob bosses, people like that". He leaned back in his chair once more it was a habit that he had grown into. "Neither my step-mom or my step-dad liked it but it didn't surprise me they were both passivists (sp?). I should rephrase that...It didn't surprise me that my step-mom didn't like it she's never been too fond of anything I've done".

Lao-tzu nodded, fascinated and even impressed by Dante's tale.  "You have grabbed a hold on a kernel of real wisdom, my friend.  Nothing can grow which doesn't have strong roots. You also seem to build your life around your strengths, like a river carving a valley.  Do not let go of this wisdom, grasp it firmly and follow it where it leads, for it will serve you well."

Long practice allowed the sage to pronounce these words with just the right amount of gravitas and hint at deeper meanings that would mature and become apparent much later.

Raelan nodded to Lao-Tsu's suggestion of comparing their magic, maybe he could learn something interesting. He nodded appreciatively to Dante's tale as well. An interesting story, it did sort of explain his coarse brash sort of approach on life, not that Raelan had much room to talk...

The transport peaks the pass, and the mountain passes the side windows. (poetic pun type sounding line completely unintentional....) Raelan looks to Lao-Tsu for directions again. "Pretty landscape out here."

Indicating an area by the nearest peak ahead, Lao-tzu said, "Yes, indeed. You may put your craft down over there by the tree-line. The path up the mountain is just visible from here."

Sensing something, he squinted into the distance and reached out with his mind. "And I believe I have an unexpected visitor. Possibly a pilgrim."

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(Ah, nuts - I wrote a long and excellent post, but it didn't get posted Sad. Here I go again, this time copying to clipboard first...)

Starcy turned her gaze from the infuriatingly empty little house towards the growing sound of engines, and spotted the transport as it came around the mountain.

She chuckled halfheartedly at the thought that apparently old geezer sages don't always walk, the way they are depicted in the movies, and a small part of her irritation at having to wait for two days evaporated.

Two days in the miserable cold, with that howling wind, with almost no food. At least it didn't rain. At least some hideous mountain beast didn't eat her up in her sleep.

Stiffly she got up from the blanket she was sitting on and started gathering her gear - food wrappers (licked clean some time ago), portable multimedia player, and some maintenance tools for her motorcycle, and the blanket. It all fit with room to spare in the storage compartment of her motorcycle. She checked that her gun was locked securely in its holster, and turned back to look at the incoming transport.

She considered the possibility it wasn't the sage at all: perhaps they were bandits who happened to spot a young girl, by a deserted house on a remote mountaintop, all alone and defenseless? Perhaps they're other pilgrims, who might decide that they'd rather like a souped-up motorcycle than to wait for a wise-man who has probably croaked years ago? Perhaps those creepy college students she ripped off last week tracked her down to teach her a lesson? Perhaps it's even ...?

No, Starcy had a good feeling about this. She even smiled momentarily - her face was beautiful for an instant - but it quickly dropped from her face. Still angry at the old man for making her wait out here with no food for two days, she pushed down, shut, and locked the storage bins, then pushed her motorcycle back onto the path.

"That old dingbat fogie Lao-Tzu had better be on that transport, and he'd better have some frakkin' answers," she paused. "And he'd better have some food!"

Starcy resolved not to lose her cool if Lao-Tzu wasn't on the ship. Perhaps, if she played her cards right, she could score some free grub before rolling back down the mountain. What she'd do after that, she had no idea. Maybe go back to work?

"Pfft. Yeah, right. We'll see..." Having pushed the motorcycle to a solid spot of ground right next to the path, she kicked down the kickstand and looked to see where exactly that boxy-looking transport was going to land.

She spotted the little flat area that the transport was heading towards, "Well, I hope that the pilot knows what he's doing, or we might have a pancaked sage on our hands... that looks to be veeeeeeeery tricky!". Starcy shrugged, and decided to run down the path to meet the newcomers.

"Cap on, face off, it's poker time," she whispered, as she pulled her cap down lower on her head, put on her ugly smirk, and started off at a trot.

(There you have it! My first-ever collaborative-fiction/forum roleplaying post! History in the making, surely. But yea, since I'm a total n00b, just let me know if I'm doing something wrong or you'd like me to do something differently, or even hints and suggestions for improving my writing and all that. Also, I'm going to the same place that Lao-Tzu is going for Christmas, and yes, it's true, sometimes the internet isn't quite as ubiquitous as we'd like it to be. So, not only is it my first-ever post, it's also (probably) my last post of 2008! Truly epic proportions! I'm looking forward to enjoying an excellent 2009 here.)

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(grats mate, welcome to the world of message board RPGers! I don't see anything wrong with your writing style, actually you write pretty well, a few tense changes, but I have to fight that myself all the time. Interaction is the harder part of these, because you have to figure out how your character would really react to what the other guy does, and then phrase it right, you can guide and squeeze another player to do something, but don't take their character over and have them react... I think that's all I have at the moment. Though Lao-Tsu probably told you that much...)

Raelan chuckled, "my first landing in awhile, at least with this version, hold on, this should be fun. Audio Command." The computer beeped recognition that verbal commands would now be accepted. "Display all available camera angles of external gravity down." Visuals of the trees and landscape below the transport appeared on the holographic HUD. "Tile, front to back." The images rearranged themselves giving a semi complete picture of the ground below.

The landing space was designed for shuttles, and possibly fighters, so the bulky transport would be a tight fit. The fact that it was a light class was probably the only thing that saved it.

The transport darted in at an alarming rate, then its nose lifted straight up, and tilted further back, which halted most of it momentum. The navigational thrusters on each side fired rapidly at different intervals, which straightened, and then guided the transport into an almost graceful, but perfectly safe 'plop' onto the small, flat landing space. The engines had also been designed to double for landing gear, but he preferred to use the secondary gear and park horizontal, it made it less disorienting when stepping out of the ship's artificial gravity.

Raelan unstrapped himself from the pilot seat, "well, we're here, best not keep the guest waiting." With that he headed down (back) to the cargo bay which had a door designed to let crew out when the transport was parked this way. he popped the hatch, lowered the ladder and climbed down, figuring he'd wait on the ground for his passengers. Instinctively, out of habit now he started storing little bits of energy into his wings and tail again, nowhere near the charge he'd had at the spaceport, but enough for him to feel them comfortably again. They would have been very transparent and ghostly if he used his detection sphere on them at that point.

Dante bit his lip as Raelan did the manuever. He breathed a sigh of relief when it was over and followed Raelan to the cargo bay. Before following Raelan out he took the safety off his Heckler and Koch pistol. He readied it for easy acess in his pocket should any conflict arise. DAnte looked down the ladder and tucked his cane under his arm and began the descent down. He fumbled a bit, nearly dropping the cane a few times. Finally he got fed up with it and took the cane in one hand and threw it to the ground, making sure it didn't hit Raelan.
His feet finally touched the ground and he glared at the cane and picked it up. His smile quickly returned as he waved towards the newcomer.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(edited to add: hey all, i'm glad to be back. Happy New Year!!)

As Raelan started swooping in for the landing, Lao-tzu idly wondered what the effects of the blast of the transport's engines would be.  His little landing plot was never subjected to much traffic, let alone such an oversized craft.  Given the care-free way people jetted hither and yon, however, he suspected that modern engines were more gentle than their chemical rocket forebears.

Dante's frustrated antics while exiting the craft didn't escape the wizard's attention.  Clearly this man was disturbed if he felt compelled to ready a lethal weapon in a situation such as this. Despite the clear evidence that Dante thought himself a moral and enlightened man, Lao-tzu decided that the man was probably deeply troubled and resolved to try to be of some help.  Just how was a question left open for the time being.

When Dante finally made it to the ground, Lao-tzu swung his surprisingly limber self onto the ladder and climbed down without much ado.  By the time he was down, the spunky youth was literally within spitting distance and almost seemed angry enough to do just that. While it was hard to see with her face all scrunched up and emotive, Lao-tzu was pleased to see a certain resemblance that mirrored the familiar sense he had gotten in the ship.  He had known this girl's parents quite well, but he intuited that she could be here for other reasons as well.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

That ended well, she concluded about the landing.

The little group emerging one by one from the transport seemed an odd bunch; it would be interesting to find out who they were.

First was that strapping Kiefan pilot who bounded out of the cockpit. What's up with his arm? she wondered. It'd be good to get on his good side, in any case - that motorcycle of hers was fast, but not really suitable for intercontinental travel. Knowing nothing about vehicles larger than trucks, she wondered if his transport was capable of interplanetary travel. Depending on how things went with Lao-Tzu, she might have a very long trip ahead of her...

Then came the very well-dressed but frustrated man with the cane. He seems friendly enough, she thought to herself, as she acknowledged the wave with a tap to the brim of her cap, but decided to reserve her first impression until later because he was a little odd. Better safe than sorry, when it comes to meeting strangers.

Finally the old bearded man with flowing robes appeared when she had just about reached the others at the transport. If that ain't a sage, then I ain't a Crystal, she thought with glee. All that waiting hadn't been for nothing!

"What kind of hermit are you, anyway?" she asked of Lao-Tzu as he turned from the ladder to face her, her voice carrying an edge of frigid scorn. "Flyin' around with some people in a transport... I've been waiting here on this stupid blasted mountaintop for ages!"

The two others seemed taken aback by her crass behavior - she could almost hear her mother saying
That's not a way to treat your elders! - but Lao-Tzu seemed completely unperturbed. That gentle smile and those twinkling eyes taking in every moment of her tirade, and apparently enjoying - no, not enjoying, but appreciating - the encounter.

Before letting more than a moment pass, she continued:
"But whatever. I kinda brought you an offering, or something, but first I want to know who these two are - you're Lao-Tzu, though, right?"

Keeping the initiative in her meeting with this guy wouldn't be as simple as with most other people she'd met - she'd have to stay smart and play her cards right, probably by manipulating his two friends, in order to stay on top of the situation. From the looks of them they weren't the types to be messed with, but at least they weren't as maddeningly serene as Lao-Tzu seemed to be!

She glanced around at the little group in front of her - Your move...
