RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie wondered just how many people were originally on the dirigible. Considering its size, probably quite a few. So where were they? She considered that if there were any survivors, they would have been outside or gone already.

Or they all gathered in one section while they awaited rescue. If they stumbled onto them, that could be... disastrous.

It occurred to her that there was a lot of storage space. Crates and crates, neatly arranged and utterly disorganized depending on the compartment, plus other stuff scattered around the floor and shelving and on top of the crates. It was amazing how they could steal this much stuff.

But honestly, Cerania was pretty sparse as far as civilization goes, despite the high amount of traffic, meaning plenty of victims, and nobody to catch you.

And yet all of this was, as of yet, unguarded. Perhaps they were doing something, had some plan. Maybe they were trying to... repair something and needed all the manpower they could get? Maybe they were putting into effect a backup plan to move the gondola in the case that it was no longer airworthy.

She almost laughed to herself at the thought of this thing moving on the ground, much less getting out of the volcanic region, but hey... truth is stranger than fiction.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo silently moved through the bulkhead from the cargo space.  Beyond it lay a carpeted hallway lined with ornate wood-paneled doors.  Fancy quarters for a gang of thugs, Hugo thought.  Some of the doors hung open, obstructing the way.

The layout of the dirigible was typical for one of this size.  Two parallel corridors ran the length of the gondola, with rooms or nooks on either side.  Hugo and Valerie were in the starboard corridor, near the aft.

When Hugo closed one of the doors to get by, he ran into his first corpse.  It was a man caught in one of the carved doorways, cruelly twisted and bruised. Yesterday, when Hugo rammed the dirigible with the jet it was an abstract thing, an interaction between objects.  Actually seeing the humanity involved made it more immediate.  But whereas yesterday the sight would have disturbed him, the morning's catharsis turned it into a proof of his strength.

Stepping over the man, Hugo moved on.

Valerie only glanced at the dead man long enough to determine that he was indeed dead—a quick determination considering the position of his body. She didn't want him sneaking up after they passed him by.

She looked through cracked doors as she passed to see if there was anything interesting in the quarters, but they were pretty much just small rooms with bunk beds and nothing else.

She was quickly noticing the fact that she had only eaten a granola bar today. She stopped for a moment, leaning against the wall to take the weight off her left leg. She unconsciously checked behind them.

Valerie: I assume there's a kitchen or mess hall, probably with some kind of nonperishable goods. We ought to get some.

It crossed her mind that it was pretty likely that there would be survivors there, again, if there were any and they hadn't left already.

There probably wasn't anything worthwhile in the quarters. She started down the hall again.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo's stomach grumbled at the mention of food. "Yeah, I've been starving since this morning. It should be right up ahead."

Only one dead guy so far. Strange, given the capacity of a craft like this, but perhaps they didn't hang out in the quarters during combat.

The pair got to a T junction.  Up ahead was a wider corridor with tables and chairs, to the left was a hallway with two wide doors.  The carpeting was noticeably more worn in this area.

Hugo went to the left and peeked into the first door.  Much to his relief, it was the kitchen, and he walked right in and started opening cupboards.  "Alright, let's take five and chow down.  We can take some to Mattias, too."

RE: Fighting Skies

Many of the cupboards had opened and their contents thrown around the room. There was a mess of spilled spices and flour everywhere.

Valerie found and picked out some less damaged cans of mixed fruit, green beans, and corn, and dropped them in her messenger bag.

She didn't feel like wasting time fussing with the stoves, particularly when she didn't even know if they'd work. The canned food wouldn't be so pleasant unprepared, but it would at least be safe to eat.

Valerie: Find anything good?

She hesitantly opened the refrigerator. Everything had been knocked around pretty good, but nothing broke open, so it was reasonably clean. She grabbed a can of Mountain Dew and opened it carefully, expecting a trap... in the form of carbonation showering her with the can's contents. It had apparently sat there long enough, as it opened uneventfully. She set it on the counter before digging through the drawers for a can opener.

A voice called from the hallway.

Voice: Hey Marty, 'zat you? Are you eating AGAIN?

At the sound of the voice, Hugo looked up from the bread and cheese he had been munching on and moved towards the door. Just a moment later a man with bandaged hands appeared in the doorway.

With a quizzical look at the two kitchen raiders, he stated the obvious, "You're not Marty!"

Hugo dashed straight at the bandit, who desperately tried to back out of the room.  They collided, and the momentum threw the hapless thug hard into the wall and knocked the wind out of him.  Hugo then pressed him up against the wall, keeping a hand on his throat.  He said, "Scream and you're dead.  Now answer me, how many of you are there on this ship?"

The bandit struggled against Hugo's arm, trying to catch his breath. He made no attempt to redirect his coughs from Hugo's face.

Bandit: Slag, I don't know. A dozen? The rest croaked or jumped the frag out. How the heck did you find us here?

Valerie held a can opener up triumphantly and worked on the can of mixed fruit. If they had to bug out, she wanted to have something in her stomach.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo threw an irritated glance over at the nonchalant Valerie.  Don't get up, no no, that fruit is pretty urgent business.  More important to eat some chopped-up plant genitalia than to make sure some guy with a gun isn't stomping down the hallway after his friend right now.

He was through being a nice guy, wasn't going to back down anymore.  A dozen guys, maybe more?  If he did this the right way, this could really be fun. Like old times.

"Thanks," he told the bandit, who was still weak from the knock.  Taking a step back, Hugo moved his big arm down to the center of the man's chest.  Focusing, remembering the secret training that the Blank family had passed down to him through generations, he summoned an enormous electric charge.  Sparks crackled as the charge leaked from the hair standing on end, the bandit's eyes opened wide, and a single loud crack announced the discharge that stopped his heart.

Wordlessly, Hugo lowered his arm, leaving a burn-mark the shape of a hand on the man's chest.  As the dead man slumped over, Hugo pulled back his sleeve and revealed a mass of scars on his forearm.  With his knife he efficiently carved out a small, ornate circular design on his arm and pressed it on his other arm. Small electric sparks seemed to flow from the bloody marks.

Turning to Valerie, he said, "Sorry hon, but I've decided to take out the trash before breakfast."

On the floor beside the door lay a wooden broom.  He picked it up and twisted off the head.  Swinging the pole around in a simple routine, he stretched and found his balance.

Before leaving, he looked at Val to see if she would follow.  The runic marks made him dangerous to be around, but on a ship like this she could be useful in a pincer movement.  And no skin off his back if she decided to keep eating instead, as it would probably be simpler for him that way.

RE: Fighting Skies

Valerie stopped dead with a scowl as Hugo unwaveringly killed the man. Obviously she wasn't exactly a pacifist herself; she wasn't beyond killing, but this went beyond that. Perhaps it was Hugo's behavior yesterday that made it so surprising; Nah, no unnecessary killing. These guys got what was coming to them, and that's enough.

Then the knife. Carving himself. She set the can down on the counter and put her hand on the hilt of her butterfly sword, ready to defend herself. Self-mutilation rarely ended well.

It was instantly obvious that it was Hugo's intention to clear the place out. Something dark had gotten into him and she was leaning toward not wanting a part of it. She wasn't afraid to fight the bandits at all; it was him.

However, she might mean the difference between everyone dying and just the bandits dying. She chose the latter and took a step forward, indicating she was coming with him, but didn't get any closer.

RE: Fighting Skies

Hugo noticed Valerie's wariness and tried to play it off, "Keep your distance, you'll get a nasty shock if you touch me right now.  How about you take the port side and I the starboard, and we meet up at the bow? These bandits won't know what hit them."

More steps could be heard out in the hallway, and a voice with a city-slicker accent said, "Ger, what's keeping ya? Marty's over here!"
