On the starship where I spent most of my days

On the White Chocolate-class expeditionary cruiser Siesta, Alex Dean, Samuel Jorgensen, Leon Mecheeto, Fate Mecheeto, Dave (of unknown surname,) and Carl (also of unknown surname) are maxing and relaxing.

Alex is talking to his sentient, electronic cohort dIAn44^9-#ggH!6--also known as Diana.

Alex: So I can just tap on you somewhere and take you with me without this bulky sphere?
Diana: Yes. The body is hot swappable.
Alex: Are there any other bodies you can go in or anything?
Diana: My core is fully compatible with various servitor bipeds, exploratory devices, and many more, and I am eighty percent compatible with the T92 series combat biped.

Alex's eyes have glazed over and a smile is spread across his face.

Diana: However, none such constructs are aboard this vessel, and, as I am sure you remember, I have travelled from a galaxy some four-thousand, five-hundred seventy-three light years distant.

Alex's face is immediately turned to sorrow.

Alex: But I can still do this--

He taps the the top of Diana's spherical structure. A lid--one that wasn't visible on her somehow seemless surface--flips open and a small, black rod, about five inches long and a little over an inch in diameter, slowly extracts itself. Alex grabs it and pulls it out.

Alex: ...What does it feel like?

There's no answer.

Alex: Uhh...

He reaches over to place the rod back in the top of the sphere, but a small light on the rod blinks and Diana begins speaking again.

Diana: My apologies, I had to reinitialize my core's audio I/O drivers. I now recall disabling them shortly after embarking on our journey to free up my processor.
Alex: That sounded like total technobabble.
Diana: I assure you it makes perfect sense.

A series of blinking lights in a line up the length of the core begins flashing in order. With each trip up the rod's length, the green lights make a progression toward red.

When they are finally red, Siesta lurches and a barely describable steady hum-whine is heard. Moments later, another lurch and the noise stops.

Alex: ...What just happened?
Diana: Oh! I forgot.

Alex smacks his forehead.

Alex: Don't tell me that.
Diana: Please replace me in my body. Wireless data is being transferred through it rather than directly to my core.

Alex shrugs and puts the core back into the sphere. It automatically slides in and the lid closes, the sphere becoming seemless again.

Diana: Oh yes! We are now orbiting Parsis.
Alex: ...Parsis?

RE: On the starship where I spent most of my days

Alex: ...What's Parsis?
Diana: A planet.
Alex: .........Well--
Diana: You should be more specific if you wish to have the answer you seek.

Alex rolls his eyes.

Diana: Let us go to the bridge. It will be more dramatic if you view the planet as I tell you about it.
Alex: I like artificial drama.
Diana: Oh! So do I.

They go to the bridge. Leon is standing near a wall. Judging from his lack of blinking and his staring at the adjacent wall, he is waiting--the Ellixan substitute for sleep.

The bridge is awesome. Alex and Diana proceed to the edge, standing face to face with the huge transparent dome. Alex's first thought was glass, but he then realized that this ship is way too advanced for something that cheap.

Alex: So, why have I never heard of Parsis?
Diana: Because it is not in Daireem.
Alex: ...Then how did we get here in like, point-two seconds?
Diana: Time compression.
Alex: ...You're serious-
Diana: No. Interpreting the one document I have remaining, your removal of my core sent a command to the ship's computer to initiate an emergency superjump to Parsis. I do not know why.
Alex: If you could jump out of a galaxy in less than a second, how did it take you thirty years to get here?
Diana: For just such an emergency, Siesta has many very large battery arrays to store power. By pumping all of this power in the bathroom generator, we can move so quickly. This is likely the upper limits of the generator's range, and it will likely take five months for Siesta's batteries to again reach full capacity.
Alex: Sounds like even that would be quicker than a 30 year trip.
Diana: They weren't that smart and didn't feel like doing the math.

RE: On the starship where I spent most of my days

Alex: So, do you have any clue what the significance of Parsis is?

Sam makes an entrance with a yawn.

Sam: ...What's going on? Where'd that planet come from?
Diana: The planet is Parsis. Siesta detects no location marker, and believe you me, if Parsis had one, the ship would detect it.

Alex squints, looking at something in the distance.

Alex: ...What is that?

There's no answer for a moment.

Diana: A wing of Rylian fighters.

She expresses no fear.

Alex: RYLIAN?!
Diana: Indeed.
Alex: Do we have weapons or anything?!
Diana: Yes, plenty, but the controls are locked.
Alex: Oh, that's convenient! How do you unlock them?
Diana: Only the late commander possessed weapon lock control.
Leon: Time to get messy.

Alex jumps when Leon suddenly speaks.

Diana: Over thirty very specific life signs and biometrics detections are used for user verification.

Leon looks grim.

Alex: ...Where's his body?
Diana: I created a paint of it to touch up various parts of the bridge. I'm rather fond of--

Alex doubles over, about to heave. He recovers and looks over his shoulder, back out the giant window, just in time to see a nuke collide with it.

The window turns black instantly, preventing the onlookers from going blind instantly and forever. There is no sign of damage. At all. The ship doesn't even rock stereotypically.

Alex: ...What just happened?
Diana: Photoreceptors detected--
Alex: No, why aren't we dead?!
Diana: I told you the shields are impenetrable.

Alex continues staring at the now-opaque window before collapsing on the floor and breathing heavily.

Diana: Don't have a cow.

Alex blinks a lot and looks at Diana.

Alex: ...Okay, so what do we do?
Diana: Wait and hope they leave. Perhaps they will expend their entire arsenal of nuclear warheads on us. That would be slick. We would show them a thing or three.

Diana's strange behavior--for her, that is--is not Alex's concern right now.

Alex: Well, you never answered me. What's the significance of Parsis?
Diana: The first White Chocolate class cruiser was assembled here, but other than that... I haven't a clue.

A klaxon blares and the lights turn red. Alex freaks out.

Diana: Don't fret. We're now registering the first nuclear strike.

Alex blinks.

Alex: ...Now? Just now--
Diana: Yes! Just now!

She giggles and floats away.

Sam: ...What in Belgium?

Alex glares at Sam for his obscenity. He looks at the forward window again. Just as it began to regain its transparency, another nuke collides with it.

Sam: ...Wonder how many they've hit us with.
Alex: It's probably pretty radioactive by now.
Diana: Oh, oh oh oh! I completely forgot that we have a teleporter! If you wish to beam to the surface of the planet, we could easily do so.
Alex: Not really, I just want to be back in my own galaxy.
Diana: As of now, that is impossible. We should teleport to the surface.
Alex: So we can be there when the Rylians glass it?
Diana: That's not the point, but it may happen.

Alex stares, mouth agape.

Alex: Well, let's get going, then.

Diana leads the way to the teleporter.

Diana: I shall remain here to operate the teleporter.

Three of her scary claws emerge, each holding an identical small device.

Diana: Place these somewhere on your person where it will absolutely not be lost. The teleporter will constantly monitor your position via these devices. I will stay behind to beam you back.

Each takes one of the devices and plants it on himself. Leon looks grim.

Diana: Oh, and take this, Alex.

The claws retract. One of them quickly reemerges, this time holding the PDA-type thing of which Alex asked several questions a few days ago.

Diana: You will be able to contact me with that, regardless of your location. Have fun now! I hope you find something helpful!

They are now standing on the planet. Alex feels queasy.

RE: On the starship where I spent most of my days

They find themselves in the midst of a steamy jungle. The air smells so thick it nearly strangles them.

Some small, four-legged creature is startled by their abrupt arrival and dashes into the foliage.

Leon draws his Glock 18 and prepares for anything.

Sam: So why are we here?
Alex: I guess to see if there's any particular reason the Siesta brought us here.

Leon is already marching off into the jungle.

Alex: Hey--wait up!

Alex and Sam rush to catch up. Alex eyes a rather large and colorful snake slithering around a tree trunk. He gets chills and pulls his eyes away from it, hurrying a little but not too much to make anyone think he's scared.

Alex: Where are you going?
Leon: This way.
Alex: ...
Leon: I have determined that your luck enables us to merely walk in a straight line to find critical objectives... or death. At least something will likely happen.

Alex shrugs. Leon stops in his tracks as his head bolts in a direction off to their right.

Sam: OMG HIS HEAD JUST FLEW OFF! O.O
Alex: No, you idiot, that means he merely turned his head in the direction of a noise.
Leon: Shut up.

Alex and Sam strain their ears to hear. Silence.

Alex: What... What is it?
Leon: Gun fire.

The trunk of a tree splinters suddenly and Leon grunts. He pushes Sam and Alex into the dirt. Alex pulls his face out of the mud and sees a bleeding hole in Leon's left bicep.

Alex: Looks like my luck has brought us death.
Leon: Just a small caliber round.

Heavy breathing and the sounds of leaves cracking beneath running feet can be heard drawing nearer.

Leon pokes his head up to see a gray-haired, bearded man running scared, all-too-often glancing over his shoulder. More bullets impact the dense foliage. Leon pulls the man down onto the ground with them.

Leon: Who are you?

The man is just flailing about wildly. Leon tries to hold him down, but the man ends up sticking a boot in Leon's mouth.

Alex: Dude, calm down! Rylians? Are Rylians chasing you?

Leon pins the man's arms to his side and finally holds him still. His eyes dart about wildly as he shakes his head an affirmative.

Leon: Is there anyone else with you?

The man is now shaking like crazy.

Leon: Is there anyone else with you?

He jerks his head negative.

Alex: Diana, beam us back up to the ship quickly.

They now find themselves feeling queasy on the floor of the teleporter room.

Diana: As you wish.

Diana floats closer to the group.

Diana: Oh! It seems you have found the designer of the White Chocolate class cruiser ship.
Alex: Oh. Wow. I guess. That's funny.
Diana: Rumor has it that he left a back door in the systems of all White Chocolate class cruisers for his own use should he need it.

Alex's eyes light up.

Alex: Does that mean he could unlock it for us to use it?!

Alex is bouncing on the balls of his feet now in excitement.

Leon: He's scared out of his mind.

Overwhelmed by the abundance of people and sudden change of scenery, the old man passes out.

Leon: Now he's out cold.
Sam: Hm.
Alex: Okay, so this man designed this ship and it was assembled here on this pre-historic world?
Diana: It would appear that way.
Alex: ... So there could be more down there?! Super Grin
Diana: It is possible, I suppose; however, unlikely.
Alex: Sad
Sam: I'm not going down to that burning hot jungle to look for more huge spaceships. I think this one is plenty.
Alex: If we can control it. Wake that guy up!

Obeying his own orders, Alex kneels next to the old man and slaps his cheeks.

Alex: Wake up. Wake up!

The old man snorts and begins to stir, noticeably calmer now.

Old Man: What?

He gets a look around the room, his eyes widening in recognition.

Old Man: Jumpin' jungle creepers, this is the teleporter room of a--HACK HACK--White Chocolate class cruiser!
Alex: Yeah, right. Exactly. Can you unlock the controls for us? The commander is long-dead and the whole ship is locked up.
Old Man: Oh, man. HEH HEH. I can unlock it for ya.

He jumps to his feet, startling Alex.

Old Man: What're ya waitin' for, whipper-snapper? Hop to it! Let's go!

He runs out of the teleporter room and down the hall toward the bridge. Alex tries to keep up. Leon and Sam follow.

He bursts onto the bridge. Fate turns to see him and thinks about drawing down until she sees Alex behind him.

Fate: Who's this guy?
Alex: Our savior!
Fate: Huh? (Jesus?)

The old man takes a seat at the helm. A device triggered by the pressure applied to the seat rises and scans the man for biometric signs. A tiny light flashes green, indicating acceptance of the pilot. The controls are unlocked and he takes extreme pleasure in firing a payload of missiles at the Rylian attackers. They all explode insignificantly.

Alex: That rocked.
Sam: That was sub-par.
Alex: Hush. At least they're gone now.
Old Man: Ah, that made me feel young again!
Alex: So, what's your name, mister?

RE: On the starship where I spent most of my days

The old man stands up again and looks at Alex.

Old Man: What? ...Name? Uhh... Boss.
Alex: ...Your name is Boss?
Boss: Well, that's all anybody's called me for about sixty years, so... I forgot my real name.
Alex: Ouch.
Boss: Mm-hm. So, whereabouts you boys based?
Alex: Daireem. We came from Flistna a few hours ago, but we're kind of travelers.
Boss: Dang. Daireem, huh? Wait a smell. How'd you get here in this thing?
Alex: ...Huh? ...Oh, the ship. Um, I removed Diana's core and it made something weird happen and we ended up here.

There's a pause.

Boss: ...Diana?

Diana, who has been existing perfectly silently behind and to Boss's right, suddenly speaks.

Diana: Hello.

Boss releases an expletive and stumbles away from Diana while gripping his chest.

Alex: Diana, don't give him a freakin' heart attack! He's our only way home!
Boss: Oh, that's the only reason you care about me, eh?

He laugh-hacks.

Diana: I apologize, Alex. Boss, I am Diana.

Boss shifts his weight forward and stares at Diana for a second.

Boss: I remember you things! Hah hah! Hey--hey, show me the thing.
Diana: "The thing," Boss?
Boss: Not you! Tell yer body to show me "the thing."
Diana: ...Alright.

A rubber ducky swings out of Diana's body and quacks. Boss nearly dies laughing.

Boss: I love that thing!
Diana: Interesting. I had no knowledge of this function.

She giggles. It's creepy, as usual.

Boss: Anyhow, I bet you boys are wanting to go back home.
Sam: 'Twould be nice...
Alex: I have the coordinates on this piece of paper...

He fumbles around in his jacket pockets and finally finds the crumpled up piece of paper. He hands it to Boss. Boss sits in the chair again, which scans him again, and he types in the coordinates from the piece of paper.

For the first time ever, our heroes witness hyperspace. It's wholly underwhelming.

Sam: Wait. This is hyperspace?
Boss: If that's what you want to call it.

Sam blinks.

Sam: It's supposed to make you insane and your brain explode or something.
Boss: ...Says who?
Sam: All the committees and lawmakers and junk.
Boss: Pfff. PFFFFT.

Sam chomps on a candy bar.

Alex: So, can you make, like, a new... authorization... protocol... or something... so I can use the ship?
Boss: Nope.

Silence.

Alex: ...Why not?
Boss: I can only control the ship. I can't make changes.
Alex: ...Dang.

Boss shrugs.

Boss: Didn't want people kidnappin' me and makin' me authorize 'em. Hey! Let's all go play some Super Baseball 2020!

Everybody's eyes widen--even Leon's and Fate's. Alex cannot stop himself:

Alex: You are old.

RE: On the starship where I spent most of my days

On the TV, a robot explodes.

Alex: DANG IT!

He is swinging and clawing at his controller. He is enraged.

Sam: He's pwnzing you.
Alex: Stiffu!

Sam blinks. Alex looks dejected.
The ship exits hyperspace. A moment later, Diana's least horrible claw taps Alex's shoulder. Alex wigs out.

Alex: Diana, d--don't touch people to get their attention. Unless you're trying to kill them, because that would work pretty well. I have like a mini-heart atta--
Diana: Alex. We have multiple contacts in the vicinity.
Alex: Contacts? As in...
Diana: Hostile. They are firing on us as we speak.
Alex: Oh.

He turns back toward the TV and shrugs.

Alex: Let 'em waste their ammo.

There is silence as he continues getting pwnzed by Boss. A minute later he looks over his shoulder to see why Diana's just been sitting there.

Of course, she left long ago.

He grits his teeth.

Fate: I can appreciate classic video games as much as the next person, but we should really be working to get the bounty hunters off our jorblocks.
Alex: Puh-lease! We've spent the past two weeks running for our lives! I need some down time.

Boss punches Alex in the shoulder as he gets a home run.

Alex: I wasn't paying attention! Come on!
Boss: WAAAAAHHHH CHAT KILL.

Alex pouts, hunches over, and attempts to play harder.
