RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Alex: Okay. So what's "TCF" and what are they doing here?
Sam: Uhh, Teas--
MIB: Teas Covert Forces.
Sam: Yeah.
MIB: We're here to offer you jobs with our organization.
Alex: Looks pretty shady.
MIB: You would be doing recon work with this dealership as your cover.
Alex: Recon work on who?

MIB: That information is disclosed as needed. And as of now, it is not needed.
Alex: ..Mmk.
Sam: So..What's in it for us?
MIB: Money. Job experience. Blowing stuff up.
Sam: Blowing stuff up?
MIB: Yes.
Sam: I'm in.

Alex pulls Sam aside.

Alex: How do you know this is even legit?
Sam: The suits. Check out those suits.
Alex: ..You make a point. But still, they creep me out.
Sam: Blowing stuff up and money? It can't get much better.
Alex: ..Yeah.

They turn around to see the two men standing closer. One of them had a PDA-like device in hand.

MIB: Should you both agree,

He hands the PDA to him.

MIB: Sign there, both of you.

Sam signs his name and hands it over to Alex.

Alex: What am I signing for? I don't know jack about this and the whole thing smells. Try again without the suits.

Alex hands the PDA back to one of the men and backs off. His hand hangs low, near his Five-Seven. He fully expects them to make an attempt on his life. Sam shrugs.

Sam: Your loss. You're a cargo hauler. You aren't getting much money.
Alex: And I have some strict rules about my employers.

One of the men adjusts his earpiece and turns to the other man. They nod and turn back to Sam.

MIB: Thank you. We have other business to attend to. We'll be back here in a few days.

He turns to Alex.

MIB: If you change your mind, the offer stands.

The two men pull back their sleeve, revealing an odd arm band. They both pusha  button on it and are enveloped in a green light, as they vanish.

Sam: That was cool.
Alex: They still seem weird.
Sam: Anyway. It'll be a few days to fix your ship anyway.

He turns to the ship and heads over to it.

Sam: May as well get started.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Alex sits down in a chair near the wall.

Alex: My experience with men in suits has never been good.

He crosses his legs.

Alex: But we can watch each other's back, eh?

Sam is studying the MTR82's engine arm, completely shutting out the rest of the world. He gets a new toothpick.

Alex: But how do we know they'll give us the jobs they tell us we're getting?

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Sam is obviously in his own little world, and doesn't hear anything Alex says. He pulls off a large service hatch off the arm and sets it on the ground, which had several bullet holes in it, and climbed halfway inside. It looked as if he's done this more than once as he forced his way as far in as he could. After checking things out for a few minutes, he popped out. The entire upper half of his body was black. It hardly phased him.

Sam: Yeah. That's not good.
Alex: What's wrong?

Sam was talking to himself, and is still in his own little world. He heads over and grabs several rolls of wire and a cordless soldering iron. He buries himself back inside the arm for about fifteen minutes.

Alex: ..You okay in there?

There's no answer. But Sam pops back out and heads over, grabbing more tools as he heads back over to the arm again.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Alex gets up. Knowing Sam won't hear anyway, he walks out without a word.

Outside, he sees a very large man walking around the lots, looking at the ships. Not out of the ordinary. He begins walking down the sidewalk aimlessly, past the few remains of the Walker and the wreckage of the city block, and to a small restaurant. Before he walks in, he notices two men in flight suits walking down the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street. He raises an eyebrow, but brushes it off and enters the restaurant to eat.

On the opposite side of the street...
Amonost: That guy was looking at us.
Eruantion: Yeeaaaah?
Amonost: Like he knows something.
Eruantion: Uh-huh.
Amonost: No, I'm serious. That guy is suspicious and as soon as I looked back at him, he turned into that restaurant.

Eruantion sighs.

Eruantion: Okay. Let's go check it out.

They cross the street and enter the restaurant. They look around for a moment and Amonost spots Alex.

Amonost: That's him.

He doesn't point, but Eruantion knows who he's talking about.

Eruantion: I'm not getting involved in this embarrassment. You go talk to him.

Amonost glares.

Amonost: Fine.

He walks casually over to Alex's table and sits down.

Amonost: Excuse me--
Alex: No, excuse me. I'm trying to have a little privacy and some food and you just come SIT DOWN right in my face like you own the place.

Amonost blinks and leans back.

Amonost: Touchy? I just wanted to ask you about somebody I'm looking for.
Alex: Okay. Go.

Alex covers his own face with the menu.

Amonost: I'm looking for a man named Leon Mecheeto. Big guy, uhh... six foot four, maybe? Last time I saw him he was wearing a black tank top and gray jeans.

Alex slowly looks over the top of his menu.

Alex: And you're looking for him... why?
Amonost: Wanted criminal. Broke out of high-security prison twice. They say he tried to steal an EE1 capital ship.
Alex: ...Okay. I might have seen him at--uh--Jorgenson Ship Dealers a couple blocks from here.

Amonost snaps his fingers twice and slaps the table.

Amonost: Thanks a lot.

He smiles and leaves. Alex waits until he's out of earshot.

Alex: ...I better not have just turned over an innocent man.

Meanwhile, at Jorgenson Ship Dealers, Leon Mecheeto enters the main office...

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Leon is wearing a thin coat mainly to cover the Glock 18 he was carrying, not wanting to attract attention. He was pretty low on tape, so he was looking for a job. He walks to the man tending the front desk.

Salesman: Can I help you?
Leon: I'm looking to get the mechanic job you have posted in the newspaper.
Salesman: You would need to see Sam Jorgenson, the owner. He's in the shop out back. Look for the guy with the toothpick hanging out of his mouth.
Leon: Thanks.

Leon heads to the shop. He soon finds Sam standing next to an MTR-82, wiping his hands on a greasy rag. Sam is finally out of his trance enough to notice people. He turns to Leon.

Sam: Can I help you?
Leon: I'm looking to get that part-time mechanic job in the paper.
Sam: What's your resumé?
Leon: I was a mechanic for a few years in the military.

He didn't want to specify what military. He hoped Sam would just assume the Teas military.

Sam: So you've got experience with fighters?
Leon: Yeah. Ground vehicles and some space haulers too.
Sam: That's way better than any of the jabonies that have applied for the job before. You're hired.
Leon: When do I start?
Sam: Now, preferably. We've been loaded with work recently. I think Dave could use some help over in dock 3. We've got a big hauler over there that took some serious damage from some pirates. If you need overalls, ask Dave. We might have some in your size.

He chuckles a bit. Leon nods and heads over to dock 3.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Sam gets back to work on the MTR-82. After a while, he finishes rewiring the arm. He leaves the service hatch off as he heads into the ship to the cockpit. he fires the engines and peers out the side. The ship lifts about a foot off the ground, and he lets it hover there for a few moments.

Sam: Seems okay.

Just then, the engine starts sputtering and eventually gives out. The back right part of the ship hits the ground with a loud thud.

Sam: Ow.

He lowers the ship down and heads back out. He climbs back into the service hatch, and realizes he forgot to rewire the stabilizer. After fixing that little problems, he tries the engine again. This time it runs without problem. Then he gets to work on patching the holes.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Amonost and Eruantion arrive at Jorgenson Ship Dealers. Eruantion glances around the lot while Amonost heads inside.

Amonost: Was a very large man through here recently?
Carl: Yeah, he was looking for a job. He just went out to talk to Sam about it. In the shop.
Amonost: Thanks.

A slight skip in his step, he exits the office. He waves Eruantion toward him, a smile on his face.

Eruantion: What's up?
Amonost: Found him.

Not about to let him slip through their fingers again, they draw their pistols and enter the shop silently. Sam hears the door squeak and turns around. He sees the men with guns.

Sam: Whoa!

He grabs his Lern and takes cover behind the Spacehawk's engine, knowing that their small arms wouldn't penetrate it. Eruantion sees him draw.

Eruantion: Well, this wasn't well-thought out.

He shouts to Sam.

Eruantion: We're not here to start shooting everything up. We're looking for a man named Leon Mecheeto.

Sam, without sticking his head out, shouts back.

Sam: Never heard of him.
Eruantion: I was told a very large man came looking for a job.
Sam: What's it to you?
Eruantion: Well, I think that's our man.
Sam: And why are you looking for him?
Eruantion: I don't have time to explain, he's probably getting away.

The loud discussion finally reaches Leon's attention. He looks over his shoulder and sees Amonost and Eruantion. He squints. Amonost happens to look in his direction. Leon knows Amonost probably saw and recognized him, but he makes an attempt to walk casually out of view anyway.

Amonost: I saw him. He's here.

There are only two doors in the shop. Leon would have to cross a wide, open space to get to the only available door, giving Eruantion and Amonost free shots. He looks out from behind the ship he's hiding behind. Eruantion and Amonost circled around the other side. He hurries up the Spacehawk's ramp, pulling Sam in with him. He mashes his fist against the button to close the rear ramp. Sam points his Lern 42 at Leon.

Sam: Don't move. Who are you and what are you doing?
Leon: Leon Mecheeto. I'm saving my butt.
Sam: Why are those guys looking for you?
Leon: I was framed for a crime I didn't commit. If I'm caught, I'd be sent back to Moh'la.

Ignoring the gun pointed at him, he proceeds to the cockpit of the ship.

Sam: ...Oh. Wait a second, you're going to steal this ship?
Leon: I prefer "borrow." You'll get it back as soon as I have a ride out of here.

Outside, Amonost and Eruantion realize that Sam is gone and the Spacehawk's ramp is closed now.

Amonost: DANG!
Eruantion: Hold on a sec...

Inside...
Sam: And you're kidnapping me?
Leon: You could put it that way. Part of saving myself.

The ship lifts off just as Eruantion begins attempting to take off the ramp control panel.

Eruantion: Yeah, you were right. "Dang."

The ship lifts out of the shop.

Inside...
Leon: I had to tell you so you wouldn't rat me out.
Sam: Guess your job didn't last too long.

Leon grunts.

Sam: I'm not exactly sure why I'm even letting you get away with this.
Leon: You couldn't stop me if you wanted to.

Sam, taking into account Leon's size, nods.

Sam: You said you'd be sent "back to Moh'la." You were there?
Leon: I broke out.
Sam: So you have committed a crime.
Leon: Death sentence, you would too. Hold on.

Sam raises an eyebrow. The hyperdrive kicks in and he almost falls.

Sam: HEY! What are you doing?!
Leon: Getting out of here until those bounty hunters leave.
Sam: My shop needs me.
Leon: Sorry.

There is no sincerity in Leon's voice.

Sam: You just ripped open space/time inside an atmosphere. That's bad.
Leon: It'll be fine.
Sam: You're not supposed to do that. EMP, huge shockwave--
Leon: It'll be fine. I've never stuck around anywhere and they know that. They'll leave in a few hours and I'll take you back and keep doing my job.

Sam takes a deep breath and sits down on one of the beds. Twenty minutes later, the ship lurches and the hyperdrive can be heard shutting down. Sam looks up through the skylight in the crew quarters. He only sees stars hundreds of millions of miles away. He enters the cockpit and sees the same thing out the front window.

Leon: Get comfortable.
Sam: I'd rather not. Say, is there a TV in there?
Leon: There's a monitor.

Leon turns it on and messes with the computer.

Leon: I have the Soap Network. Looks like Passions is on.

Sam groans.

Sam: Turn it off.
Leon: Wait. Got another channel. Tears of the Sun is on.
Sam: Sweet. Just starting, too.

Later, as the credits roll, they snap back to reality, having been completely affixed to the monitor. Leon checks the clock.

Leon: Hm. They probably left by now.

He punches in the coordinates and activates the hyperdrive again. A short while later, they once again arrive in the Blizzard system in sight of Flistna. Another few minutes later, Leon has landed the Spacehawk back in the shop.

Leon: Go make sure they're not out there. If they are, tell them I dropped myself a few hundred miles west of here.

Leon climbs into the very-cramped overhead life support unit compartment. Sam lowers the ramp and heads out. Dave is standing outside tapping his foot and Alex is looking very angry.

Dave: Where did you go?
Sam: Uh, left the stove on.

This was understood around the dealership as "It's private, buzz off." or some similar phrase.

Sam: Are those bounty hunters still around?
Dave: No, they left a while ago. Heard 'em complaining and saying something about leaving the system.
Sam: Okay.
Alex: What the slag were you doing with my ship for three hours?
Sam: Two and a half.
Alex: Two hours and forty-five minutes.
Sam: Fine. Well, an escaped convict stole your ship and kidnapped me.

Alex glares at him.

Sam: I'm completely serious, but he brought me back after we watched Tears of the Sun in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Somewhere between solar systems, I guess.
Alex: You realize you're making yourself look even more ridiculous, right?
Sam: Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. Hang on.

Sam heads back up into the ship and taps on the access panel for the life support compartment. Leon jumps out.

Sam: All clear.
