RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Alex reaches into his pocket, makes a face, and reaches into his other pockets.

Alex: Nuts. Where did it go?

He looks distressed. One of the guards points at Sam.

Guard: What about you? Do you have identification?
Sam: Uhh... I... was authorized to come with him.
Alex: I have no idea where my freaking CARD WENT!
Guard: Well, you can't go in without ID. Sorry.

Alex drops his arms and adopts a look of helplessness.

Alex: I'm gonna go see if I can find it in my ship or something.

Alex turns and heads out of the room. Sam follows. In the hall, Alex slams against a wall and breathes heavily.

Alex: I can't believe that worked. So now what do we do?
Sam: Beat up some guy and take his card?
Alex: They probably have pictures on them. It'd be pretty useless ID if it didn't.

Suddenly, a green light engulfs them and they find themselves in another room. It seems to be the communications room. They stand still for several long seconds, silent.

Sam: ...What was--
Alex: NO clue.

They look at each other, still baffled. They then turn and begin accessing terminals.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

It is mid-day, and Leon is on lunch break at a nearby cafe. He is currently enjoying a double cheeseburger in the patio area of the cafe when he suddenly hears the name "Fate Mecheeto." His head jerks toward the source: two men wearing sunglasses at a table across the patio. One is significantly larger than the other. Their backs are to him. He listens intently while the small one speaks.

Small Man: ... My superiors put a contract out on her six months ago but nothing has come of it. Surely you've seen it?
Big Man: I have. Not 'nough cash.
Small Man: Ah. That's what we were afraid of and why I was implored to seek you out. The bottom line is she needs to be eliminated, and the documents she possesses destroyed. We can offer 500,000 tape.
Large Man: Pfft. You think that's enough for me to waste the next three months of my life looking for someone who could be anywhere in the universe?
Small Man: 650,000.

The large man is silent. The small one shifts uncomfortably.

Small Man: 900,000 tape.

The large man finally moves. He rests on his elbows, leaning against the table.

Big Man: Tell ya what... I'll think about it. Tell me how I can contact you.
Small Man: Due to privacy concerns, I'm unable to provide you with that information. I will have to contact you.
Big Man: Fine. I'll be at the Ferris Hotel, room 442. Contact me tomorrow afternoon.

The small man stands up.

Small Man: Thank you for your time, Mr. Myiro. I will be contacting you tomorrow afternoon then. Good day to you.

The small man exits the cafe. "Mr. Myiro" remains and finishes his ale. Leon's priority immediately switches to the small man. He swallows the rest of his burger whole and leaves, tailing the small man a couple blocks. He turns the corner and Leon loses sight of him.

Right around the corner is a black sedan with tinted windows. The front passenger side door opens and a suit with shades, ear piece, and undoubtedly a Micro Uzi beneath his coat exits. He opens the back door for the small man as Leon rounds the corner. The small man notes the look on the suit's face and turns to see Leon.

Small Man: Mecheeto!

The suit goes for his piece, but Leon draws his Glock 18 first and puts a burst from the suit's chest to the center of his forehead. Bystanders begin panicking. The other car doors are swinging open as three more suits exit, two with Micro Uzis and one with an MP5K-PDW. They open up as Leon jumps back around the corner. One of the suits tosses the small man an MP5K as well. Leon fires blindly around the corner, perforating the car. One of the suits makes hand signals. The other two cross the street. The signaler begins firing shots at the ground near Leon's feet, hoping to keep him pinned. The other two get on the opposite sidewalk and see Leon. They begin firing.

Chunks of concrete launch from the building that's being pummeled, stinging Leon's face. He fires in their direction while running for cover, but there's not much to be had. He hits slide lock and quickly switches mags, dropping the old one on the ground. He gets behind a thick concrete staircase handrail. Their 9mm shouldn't be able to penetrate it for now. He realizes he has to end this gunfight quickly because he wasn't equipped for anything prolonged. All he had left was two 31-round magazines, and one was now in his gun. Police were surely on their way by now. People are running around uselessly screaming. Cars are blocking the road, the occupants abandoning them and running away on foot. Leon almost couldn't believe the panic from some measly 9mm gunfire. He notices an alley across the street that may allow him to get behind the suits. He makes a mad dash for it, hoping to remain concealed behind cars. Unfortunately, the suits notice him and begin firing, poking holes in the many vehicles Leon is passing. So much for that plan. The two suits are still on the sidewalk in plain view. Leon takes advantage of this, pops up from behind a car, and fires a few shots their way. Two shots land, hitting a suit in his body armor and arm. He drops his gun. They immediately find some cover.

Leon takes the chance to get to the alley. The small man and another suit are still firing from around a corner though. Leon didn't want to kill the small guy. He had questions for him. Surely he must know who framed him or at least someone who did. Leon couldn't retreat, or else he might miss his only chance to find out the truth. The gunfire stopped. He hears a car's engine start up. He peeks around the corner and sees the two suits that were out in the open running to the car. The other two are obscured by a building. He fires at them. One returns fire so Leon pulls his head back into the alley. The car's tires squeal as it peels out and heads down the road. Leon jumps out and fires frantically, hoping to disable it or its driver. They fire back through the rear window. Nobody's shots connect.

Sirens can be heard in the distance. Leon decides to am scray... but not before retrieving his dropped mag from the ground nearby.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

They download the information to their PDAs. On the opposite side of the room, there's a short stairwell and a door.

Alex: Hey...
Sam: Huh?
Alex: There are two exits. We go out that one--

He points.

Alex: And they'll be none the wiser. They'll just think we came in the other way.
Sam: Good thinking.

They pocket the PDAs and head casually out the other door. The guards nod at them and pay them no more attention. They proceed down the hall and eventually find their way back to the hangar. Alex is completely in disbelief. They board Alex's ship.

Alex: I have no idea how we just managed that.
Sam: Somebody's looking out for us. Anyway, let's get out of here before we get in trouble.

They do.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Only moments after leaving, the PDAs start beeping, displaying a name and location. The name "Daniel Wilson" flashes on their PDAs, and a rod dot is pinpointed on a map of the slums.

Sam: That must be where we're headed.

Sam changes direction, and heads south, as does Alex. After flying for some time, they can see the smog-covered slums below. The buildings were in tatters and falling apart, people scarcely came to the slums for anything other than its notorious black market. Sam and Alex land in thick woodlands outside of the slums. They both meet outside their ships.

Alex: Won't we stand out?
Sam: Maybe.

Sam grabs his Satyr and slings it over his shoulder and they both head towards the slums. They're watched like hawks as they walked through the dreary streets. Even the roads were falling apart. The smog was so thick, the sky appeared gray all year round. Many of its inhabitants we're born with deformities from the pollution, and rarely lived past four or five years old. Almost everybody walked around with some sort of firearm on them. Off in the distance was a building that seemed to be in better condition than most, an old neon sign hung above the door that read "The Old Mug." Sam checked his PDA, and noted that the red dot was directly over that building. He pointed it out to Alex.

Sam: That must be the place.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Alex coughs in the smog.

Alex: Wonderful.

They head inside. It is a smoky bar.

Alex: Not much different than outside, eh?
Sam: Nope. You know what? We don't even know who we're looking for.
Alex: Yeah, that's pretty funny.

Alex pulls out his PDA and stares at the screen, motionless, for a minute.

Alex: Annny second now...

Sam raises an eyebrow.

Sam: What?
Alex: I'm going to get a picture right on my PDA of the guy. I mean, we just got randomly beamed where we needed to go back on that ship, why not?

Sam crosses his arms and taps his foot, glaring at Alex. Alex sighs.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

They wait about five minutes and nothing comes up.

Sam: Well?
Alex: ..Yeah. I thought that'd work.
Sam: Well, what now?
Alex: Ask around?
Sam: I have a feeling that'll get us in more trouble. Plus, I'm thirsty. I want a drink first.
Alex: ..Okay.

Sam heads over to the bar. The bartender was some beast-looking creature, a goliath in size. Sam orders a drink and tosses some Tape on the counter, and the creature soon hands him his drink. Alex sits besides him but orders nothing. Sam slowly sips at his drink, peering around the bar for any 'suspicious' looking folk. But obviously, everyone here looked suspicious. At the corner table was a rather short man, accompanied by several very large men. No doubt packing arms. Sam waves the bartender over. The creature grunts. Sam slides some tape across the bar.

Sam: Wilson. Ever heard of him?

The creature eyes him for a moment. Sam sighs and passes over some more tape. The creature grunts again, and briefly points at the corner table.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

Alex: Well, that's great. He's surrounded by overstuffed gorillas, undoubtedly with Micro Uzis under their suits. How the heck do they expect us to do this?

Daniel turns to one of the "overstuffed gorillas" and says something to him. The OSG nods. Daniel stands up and walks toward the bathroom, a single guard following him.

Alex: ...I suddenly have to go to the bathroom.
Sam: Me too.

Alex gets up and heads for the bathroom. A few seconds later, Sam follows. The bathroom is absolutely filthy and offends Alex. The guard is standing in front of one of the stalls, looking ominous. As Sam enters the bathroom, Alex enters a stall, looking drunk and making noises. Sam turns to the sink and starts washing his hands--whatever good that would do him in this filthy bathroom. The toilet is heard flushing and a stall opens. Alex flings open his stall door, smashing the guard in the face, and draws his Five-Seven. Sam draws his Lern and holds it on the small man.

Alex: Okay, I think we should have planned a little more. How do we get out?

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

The small man busts out laughing.

Small man: You're not getting out of here alive.
Sam: We'll find a way.
SM: Unlikely.

Alex points to a barred window in the bathroom. Sam keeps his Lern pointed at the man while Alex heads to the window. The bars were so corroded, it took only a few hard kicks for Alex to break them out. Alex hops out the window. Sam guides the man to the window while Alex waited on the other side. They were all soon outside in the alley.

Alex: Give me fifteen minutes.
Sam: Why?
Alex: I'll get my ship. Meet me in the nearest clearing.
SM: I'm telling you, you'll both be ki--
Sam: Shut up, midget.

Sam nods to Alex, who hurries off in one direction down the alley. Sam walks with the man down the other way towards the marshes, knowing that his backup would be coming soon.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

The marshes are foggy, obscuring any view that could be had of any approaching attackers. Fortunately, in a few minutes, Alex arrives.

Alex: I see you're not dead. Get in.

Sam does, dragging Daniel, who is looking more and more distressed, behind him.

Daniel: What do you want?! Did Mecheeto hire you?!

Alex turns.

Alex: Mecheeto? Leon Mecheeto? ...No, he didn't hire us. Sam, you keep an eye on him.

He enters the cockpit and lifts off, heading back for where they initially landed. When they arrive, there are several suits with guns standing and crouching about Sam's ship. They scatter when a few railgun rounds explode around them. By this time, Sam has tied Daniel down.

Alex: Go!

Sam hurries out of the back of the ship, the ramp closing behind him, and jumps into his ship. A few gunshots ring out as they take off, but none of them connect. They fly out at full speed. As they fly over the slums, they notice a gunfight in the street; three men seem to be owning the entire contents of The Old Mug. This is not their concern.

RE: A Traveller, a Cargo Hauler, and a Ship Dealer Walk Into a Bar

They get about halfway back to the dealership, when Sam's ship start sputtering and rattling badly. Alex  notices Sam falling behind. He flips on his radio.

Alex: You okay back there?
Sam: I have no idea. Hang on.

Sam runs a quick diagnostic, and soon learns that his engine power is down to 20% and dropping.

Sam: I've gotta land.
Alex: Huh?
Sam: Can't talk!

Sam guides the ship down for an emergency landing in the middle of an open grassy field. He hits the ground hard and is knocked out for a few minutes.

Alex: Sam? SAM! You there?

Alex is hovering above the Reaver. Sam shakes it off and goes to respond to Alex, but his radio dies out. All his electronics in the ship die out at once. Sam throws his hatch open and waves up to Alex. Sam pulls out his phone and calls Alex.

Alex: What happened?
Sam: No idea. You go on. I'll catch up.
Alex: You sure?
Sam: Yeah.
Alex: ..Alright.

Alex pushes his throttle back up and heads off again. Sam crawls under his ship and pulls open a maitenance panel. Inside were two, rather large, light-blue fuel rods that power the Reaver. he squints his eyes and realizes that the main feed line was disconnected from one of the rods. He hooks the line up again, and the rods begin to glow as his systems start up again. He closes the panel and crawls out from under the ship. Above him are two 556A's and an L20.

Sam: Uh oh.

Sam rushes to his storage hatch and pulls out his Striker, hoping to at least take down something before he tries to escape.
