Up From the Depths

(Continued from The Waiting Game)

It had taken over two hours for the squad of armed men to give up and leave the clinic. The female receptionist had knocked on the hatch when it was clear.

Now, Asmod Doomfinger, Engell Hammerskull, and Malcolm Griggs stand inside the ruins of the clinic, staying away from the windows in case the attack team had left a sentry.

Doctor: I don't have the facilities here to remove the shrapnel. As long as you stay off the leg and keep it bandaged, you'll be fine for a while. There's a risk of infection—
Malcolm: Not really.
Doctor: ... Well, okay. But anyway, your best bet to get it removed is in Sekhmet. It's a long way away, but we get shipments every week from northern Sorna, just south of the border. The pilot of the cargo plane is a friend of mine and I can get you a ride.

Malcolm nods.

Doctor: For now, you'd be best off if you leave town. Just jump the wall out back and get out of here. I'll go ahead and say you three look like the kind that can make it on your own out here.

Malcolm grunts in a way that could almost be construed as a chuckle.

Malcolm: Thanks doctor.

Malcolm, with the aid of Asmod's wallet, leaves 160 tape with the doctor and the small party disappears from town.

RE: Up From the Depths

Somewhere, far enough away from Asmod and crew to be pure coincidence, Lucy and Z are just taking care of a few loose ends.  Mostly, Z is taking care of the loose ends, and Lucy is holed up in a small room, monitoring Z's actions.  A scream ends in a splattering sound and blood is thrown up in high def all over the hotel wall.  She smiles and disconnects, the image disappears and the wall is white again.  Z will find his own way back.  In the mean-time, she begins to pack up her belongings.  A stack of papers goes in to her suitcase first, in a small, hidden compartment.  Her clothes go in after, and finally, a small laptop on top.  The suitcase clicks closed and locks via two silver clasps.

Z enters the room a few minutes later and tosses a pair of leather gloves in the trashcan.

Z: Everything is taken care of.
Lucy: I was watching.
Z: I know you were.

Lucy smiles crookedly.  She leaves the room-key on the dresser and they leave, closing the door behind them.

RE: Up From the Depths

The local star had fallen and the trio had slept—or waited, in Malcolm's case. Malcolm made a point of getting up before the star, so as to not melt in their sleep.

That morning, over a breakfast of an unappetizing but nutritious cactus-like plant, they realize a few things.

  1. They don't know when the cargo plane is arriving.

  2. They don't know where the cargo plane is arriving.

  3. If it's going to be several days, staying out in the desert isn't preferrable.

So they make way back to the settlement under the minimal light of dawn and climb the unguarded section of wall behind the clinic.

Nobody is in at this time, but the door is so blasted out from the battle the day before that they have no problem at all entering and waiting in the back.

During the wait, the pain in Malcolm's leg, though not inhibiting him, is started to anger him, so he helps himself to a few suitably powerful pain pills for his large Ellixan frame.

Eventually, the doctor walks in and nearly has a heart attack. He soon calms down.

Doctor: What are you doing back here?
Malcolm: You didn't tell us where or when this cargo plane would be arriving.
Doctor: ... Oh. Right. Well, uh, as a matter of fact, it should come later today.
Asmod: This is satisfyingly convenient.
Doctor: And the landing strip is just over Barkley's Pass to the north. Not that far and easy to spot when you're going that way. I called Jones last night to let him know you guys need a ride. You can go wait there if you want, but you'd better stay out of sight. No telling who'll pass through there in the meantime.

Malcolm nods.

Malcolm: Good. Thank you.

The small party heads out.

RE: Up From the Depths

Lucy and Z arrive at a little strip mall outlet just south of Barkley's Pass.  Q is waiting for them with a rather funny little smile on his face.  Z is stoic as usual, holding a black umbrella over Lucy to keep her from the sun.

Q: How'd it go?
Lucy: We've completed our mission.  I have all the information we need.  We can high-tail it out of here any time now.
Q: Ahh~ that's good.

Q looks off rather distantly and runs his hand through his hair.

Lucy: Any thoughts?
Q: Isn't this a planet densely populated by Demons?
Lucy: Yes...
Q: Aren't you curious at all?

Lucy chews her lip.

Q: Well?
Lucy: Not really.
Q: Why not?
Lucy: My mother was enough demon for me.  I don't think I need to investigate further.

Q ponders this for a minute and watches Lucy through squinted eyes.

Q: Isn't your job information acquisition?
Lucy: To a degree.

Q looks to Z for help, but Z offers no support.  He is sporting a rather devious grin, though.

Q: Well, I'm interested.
Lucy: Maybe we'll take a field trip here some other time.

This seems to satisfy Q for the time being.  He offers Lucy his arm and she takes it and allows him to escort her inside the nearest building.

RE: Up From the Depths

Having made the decision to wait at the airstrip, the three have climbed over the fence once again and begun trekking north.

Malcolm is getting very irritated by this piece of metal hanging out of his leg as he walks, but he doesn't outwardly indicate this. The doctor had him in a wheelchair yesterday, and it would have been rather helpful would it actually roll in the sand... and hadn't been shot up in yesterday's assault. His own pride would probably have kept him from using it anyway.

The thick bandage around the wound has been soaked red by now. Every step continues leak, but he ignores it.

Before long, they reach the top of Barkley's Pass. As far as they can see is pretty well flat, and straight ahead, in the distance, is a long, paved strip. Other than that, there's just a rickety-looking tower and a shed.
