Szyren Kouchishio

Character Name: Szyren Kouchishio (Sa-E-ren Koe-chi-SHI-o)

Age: 21

Gender: Female

Race:  Shape shifter Kiefan
Alternate Form: Phoenix (Crane)

Description:

(My picture. No touchy, plzkthnx.)

Szyren is a pyromaniac and accident prone, a combination which makes her a dangerous entity to hang around unless you carry a fire extinguisher with you at all times.  A pyrotechnician, she has a reputation for making anything she touches explode; they’ll call it the Szyren Touch.  And with her race’s natural tendency towards magic, it has been a common belief that Szyren possesses inherent “magical” pyrotechnic ability, which she denies.  In fact, it seems that aside from her shape-shifting capabilities, Szyren is deprived of the supernatural aspects of her kind, as nothing else paranormal has made itself known to her.

Her personality is just as volatile as her hobby.  On a good day one might say she was simply capricious.  On a bad day, it’s best not to get in her way.  Szyren makes a habit of being absent minded and easily distracted, but when she sets her mind to something, nothing can disrupt her focus.  Earthquakes have tried.  Szyren is generally happy (though often viewed as cynical), carefree (which is occasionally mistaken as being unaware of the consequences of her actions), and outgoing.  She’s never intentionally cruel, but she has an edgy sense of humor that makes itself apparent in cutting sarcasm.  She takes for granted that not everyone shares her appreciation for irony.  Szyren, however, will never tell you if she’s mad unless she’s provoked into doing so.  If aggravated, her temper is prone to flare, though these angry outbursts never last for long, as she simply gets tired of being upset.

Szyren’s outward appearance matches her firecracker personality.  She’s slight of build and has a wiry quality.  Her limbs are long, but when she stands up straight, she barely reaches 157.9 cm (5 feet 2 inches).  As far as womanly curves are concerned, though she does possess them to a limited degree, they are usually hidden under a long white coat.  Her hair is naturally fire-truck red (rare for her race), but about half-way down it fades to orange, and then yellow, and then finally, bright blue (thanks to practiced hair-dying techniques).  Her complexion falls under a gray shade of pale brown and her ears, filled with holes filled with studs, come to a clear point.  Her eyes are almond-shaped, her eyelashes and brows are light and thin, and she wears no make-up to accentuate her features.  She can often be found wearing square, black shades and a green bandana to keep her long bangs out of her moon-yellow eyes.  She has an affinity for blue and shamrocks, and most of her accessories fall under one of these two categories.

If she had to pick a melee weapon, she would go with the unconventional sledgehammer, though she prefers the long range benefits of bombs and hand grenades (which she can construct herself).  If a sledgehammer is not available, she will make use of any weighted object in her vicinity.  In the past, flashlights, crowbars, and baseball bats have been found effective.  The only real weapon she is truly adept with is nunchaku, which stems from a childhood fascination with martial arts that she carries still (and can often be seen practicing).  Knives and swords and other weapons of a truly gruesome nature never captured her imagination or her interest.

She is, by no means, a pilot.  She has never gotten the knack for flying ships, though she has studied diligently to gain a basic knowledge, and has commandeered a ship or two in times of crisis. (Most of these, however, she managed to reduce to smoldering piles of rubbish at her earliest convenience).  And as to fire-arms, nothing smaller than a rocket launcher will hit its mark.  She doesn’t think of it as horrible aim so much as an outstanding talent to hit anything but what she’s aiming for.  Don’t bother correcting her.  She won’t pay attention.

History: Szyren was born not on Fierra Mesa, the home planet of her species, but instead on Vansid, in a repulsorlift city that was not Qwark, but had much the similar beauty and cleanliness of the cluster.  Her childhood was peaceful for the most part, lacking in traumatic events and full of familial love and attention.  Her mother was a marine biologist and her father an accountant.  It was because of her mother’s line of work that they moved from Fierra Mesa to Vansid.  In her childhood years, Szyren would never see her home planet, and the kids at school barely ever made fun of her pointy ears.

After her parents discovered her attraction to martial arts, she was enrolled in different schools and was found to be a quick study in all of them, though the same couldn’t be said when it came to scholastic education.  She simply didn’t care enough to do well in school; she wasn’t stupid.  Szyren’s lack of drive frustrated her parents, both intellectuals, and though they encouraged her to do better, Szyren wouldn’t show true improvement until her 7th year of school, when she was introduced to chemistry.  By the third day of class, she had dropped and shattered two mercury thermometers, dropped and shattered a beaker of hydrochloric acid, set her hair on fire with a Bunsen burner, and exploded an experiment gone a rye (luckily, no one was hurt beyond repair.  Szyren herself was only scratched on the jaw by a flying shard of test-tube.)  Szyren was removed from the class, but her exposure to chemistry and potentially dangerous, explosive things had forever changed her.  She became obsessed.

Her parents viewed this as a positive change in their daughter who before showed no interest in things science and school related.  They enrolled her in a private school where Szyren was free to take whatever science classes she wished, regardless of the dangers she posed to herself and her peers (Her parents paid good money to allow her to pose those threats, after all).  In three years, she had gone from an average, unmotivated student to an exceptional science scholar and catastrophe.

However, Szyren was forcibly banished when, a week before she was to graduate, she accidentally set off the firework display she was creating for her final project, destroyed the lab she was working in, set the school building ablaze, and, with it, half the campus.  Needless to say, she was not allowed within five hundred meters of the property afterwards.  No other school would take her, despite the amount of money her parents would be willing to pay.  Their frustration having reached a peak, they finally held Szyren accountable for her academic laziness, and presented her with an ultimatum.  They would either send her away to a military school of some kind, or she would take herself away of her own free will and do with her life as she pleased, away from her parents and no longer their responsibility.

Szyren (15 at the time) chose the later option, and since has been roaming the cosmos as a vagabond, doing odd jobs do support herself and getting into heaps of trouble in her spare time.

For a while she was taken in by a pilot, only ever known to her as Starch, and his crew. He attempted to teach her a trade, and she learned how to make minor repairs to different types of spacecraft.  He was kind and forgiving of her mistakes and clumsiness.  And though he often teased her for it, he was never cruel.  He even tried to teach her to fly, but she never really caught on.  It was in her time with Starch that Szyren realized her shape shifting abilities for the first time.  (Though that is a completely different story, he helped her through this as well).   She felt a bond develop between them, despite the fact that he was at least twice her senior, that was more than platonic.  If he had similar feelings for her, they were never divulged.  Her career with him ended when his ship came under attack in pirate territory and she was forced (by Starch) into a small escape pod to, well, escape in.

What became of Starch is a mystery that haunts her, though she fervently believes he lives.

Her distress signal was picked up by a cargo ship that transported her to Fierra Mesa where she became employed by Stairtan-Remos as a maid.

In the end, it was because of her shape shifting ability and her initial inability to control her transformations, that Szyren was asked to leave (with a nice note written on a little pink slip).  Fairly unimpressed with her “home-world”, Szyren journeyed on to Lars, where she stayed for a while and learned the art of grenade-making from a rickety old veteran who liked to scream profanities for no apparent reason, and she fully gained control of her new talent.  She bypassed the Reia Bonu System completely, and went to Cerania with the hope of finding Starch, who often sang praises for the pilots there and reminisced of his own barnstorming days. Instead, she made friends with a group of exhibition pilots involved in a smuggling ring.  Though she had little to do with their felonies, when they were found and arrested, Szyren, as well, was incarcerated.  She managed to escape (and free her friends) in an explosion of, as is documented, unknown origins.  (It involved fireworks, frag grenades, and copious amounts of hydrochloric acid).  She thought it best, afterwards, to escort herself off the planet.  From there she bounced around between Liavor, Menos, Lanus, and Kote.  During this time of relative inactivity, she started a small business and made good profit selling custom fireworks for festivals and other occasions. She managed to stumble into a wide range of other adventures during these years, but they are of little to no historical import and merely make for good anecdotes.

This random existence, however, only amused Szyren (now 20) for so long before she decided, once again, to search for Starch.  She “borrowed” an empty J1M1 War Wagon from a spaceport on Lanus (the exact details of how she managed this are sketchy), and set about on her mission.

Sometimes you get a better perspective of things when they're up-side-down.

RE: Szyren Kouchishio

Well, that's quite a read. Grin

Everything looks fine. Your list of items is a little unnecessarily long. Listing clothing isn't necessary (that's why you start with "Bare Necessities") unless it's a particularly important piece that you specifically want in your inventory. Same for backpacks and hair dye kits. Wink I can still put it all in if you want it though.

Pricing your nunchaku around 100 tape (figured that's a pretty good price for a quality one, but I had to come up with it just now since we don't actually have such an item XD ) you still have about 680 tape in the bank.

Approved! And I'll get around to setting up your inventory when you get back to me about whether you really want all those items.
