Can't I Have Any Time?

Eruantion climbed out of his ship, having just flown with another new kid who thought she could beat his time in manuvers. The kid, of course, didn't beat it.
Eruantion smiled at the thought, and quietly hoped that one day soon, someone would beat his time. He was getting too old for all these young punks.

He walked down the corridor, stopping in the office to fill out the mandatory paperwork. After he was finished there, he went and got changed into his black uniform, and walked outside.
It was suprisingly warm, and not raining. There were a few storm clouds off in the distance, but nothing too threatening.
His wife, Nienna, was waiting by the car for him.

"Did they beat your time?" Nienna asked, smiling.
"Of course not." Eruantion smiled back. "You ready? I'm starving." he asked.
"Yes! I am too." she replied, rubbing her stomach.
"Where to?" he inquires, as he climbs in the car and puts the key in the ignition.
"I was thinking we could go to the Tomato Garden." she replied back, knowing he wouldn't say no.
He, as expected, didn't argue.

They were driving towards the resturant, when Eruantion got a call on his cell phone. He looked down at his shirt pocket, where it was sitting.
He decided not to answer it, and looked back up to the road.
He's on a date, he's not answering. No.

It rings again...

Mondays Always Get Me Down

Eruantion's gaze slowly shifted over to Nienna, to guage her reaction. She's giving him that "If you answer it, you're walking home" look.
He slowly shifted his gaze back to the road, chosing to ignore the call, yet again.

It rings a third time.

Nienna looked out the passenger window, and contemtuously said, "Well, are you going to get it?"
Eruantion took the phone out of his pocket and twirled it in his hand, refusing to look at who was calling. Why do women have to be so difficult?

A fourth.

"If you're not going to answer it, turn the blasted thing off." Nienna said crossly, getting annoyed with the little tune playing every thirty seconds or so.

"Well, I can tell you don't want me to answer it. Which, I can see why. We're on our first real date in months. However, they seem pretty persistant, like it's something truly important." Eruantion cautiously replied.

"Wow, you're observant." Nienna tossed back at him.

Eruantion thought about asking her what her friggin' problem was, but thought better of it. He found it very odd that the cell phone ringing would make her that upset. Though, he figured it might just be "that time".

"Alright. I'll turn it off." he finally replied, defeated. Promptly doing what he said. "Are you sure you're feeling alright?"

"Of course." she snaped back. "Why?"

"Well, it's just that you seem a little on edge. Is there anything bothering you?" Eruantion asked, chosing his questions very carefully.

"It's just that I see you for a couple weeks every few months, and then you're off on some hair brained adventure again. I never know if you're going to be killed, or find another woman, or any number of things. Then you come home, and you get phone calls all the time, when we're supposed to be going on a date. It's like they know when you land, and are trying to take you away from me. It's just so infuriating." she finished, with a deep breath.

"Well, I am not cheating on you, if you're really worried about that." Eruantion started out, "And, I do try my best to keep from getting killed. Amonost has got my back for the majority of the time."

"Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that you're out there in dangerous situations all the time. There's sometimes that you can't stay out of harms way. When you're in space, it doesn't take much to blow up your ship. It's not like space is exactly a safe environment." Nienna retorted.

"Listen. There's nothing any of us can do about it. It's just the way things are. It's how I make money for us to live on. I know it's not the most ideal situation, but it's what I like to do. I think I would go stir crazy if I ever had to sit around behind a desk, and not get to be out on the field. We'd have some real problems, if that was the case. What we have right now, truly isn't all that bad." he said, trying to back up his point. He hoped it would satisfy her, and she'd just accept his answer. Unlikely. -- "And about everyone calling as soon as I land, I have no idea. It might have to do with the UPS (Universal Positioning System) on the ship. I really don't know." he ended.

Nienna just sighed, and turned back to face the road ahead of them. Eruantion turned to look at her again. She looked somewhat downtrodden, but at least not upset like she was.
This was going to be a long date.

Plague of Ghosts

They finally arrived at the Tomato Garden, after what Eruantion felt was ages. Trying to find a place to park, was pretty much a nightmare.

After circling the parking lot a couple of times, they finally found a spot and pulled in. Nienna was still as quiet as death, and not really looking at Eruantion.

"Listen, if you're going to give me the cold shoulder all night, it's going to make this very awkward and unenjoyable. We could just go home." he said, looking at her, very seriously. "I mean, I would love to spend time with you, but this is pretty ridiculous."

"So, you want to go home then?" Nienna said, in a quiet voice.

"No, but it's better than not even talking to you. Even when we do talk, it's not enjoyable. You look like you're about to break down crying any minute." Eruantion was getting fed up with the whole procession.

"Alright. I'll work on it. Let's go in and get something to eat. Hmm?" Nienna again replied softly.

They both got out of the car, and walked inside. It took them nearly a half hour to be seated. Then when they were, they could only get a table in the smoking section. Things just kept getting better.

After a fairly quiet meal, they got up and left, heading back to the house. Even though Nienna had promised to work on her demeaner and attitude, it hadn't much improved. She was still quiet for the majority of the ride home. When she did speak, it was usually in reply to something the news caster had said on the radio.

When they finally arrived at their house, they saw that something was not quite right about it. Upon further inspection, it seemed that someone had broken in.
Eruantion told Nienna to get back in the car, and he drew his HK USP .45, and slowly made his way into the house. It was dark, but he could tell the room had been trashed.

There were gouges in the wall, and one big gouge that went all the way around the room, and up the stairs. The couch was up on it's side, and the coffee table was smashed to splinters.

Eruantion couldn't tell for sure, but there appeared to be blood on the wall. He didn't want to turn on the light, in case he allerted someone to his presence, and he had a feeling they wouldn't turn on anyway.

After clearing the bottom floor, he slowly headed up the stairs, making sure to avoid the squeeky one. The gouge that was in the wall, went straight for their bedroom. The handle on the bedroom door was ripped off, leaving only the bare hole.

Eruantion cleared the other rooms first (which were also utterly destroyed), then slowly opened the bedroom door.

He almost lost his dinner, when he saw what was hanging from the ceiling. What Eruantion could only assume used to be a man, was hanging there with a thin wire wrapped around his leg. A large patch carpet below the man was soaked with blood, and the room stank with the smell of burnt flesh.
On the wall, written in blood was,

"i DRifT Away tO DrEamlEsS sLeEp"

Rain Gods Dancing

Eruantion slowly backed out of the room, not sure what to do. The whole scene was still slowly sinking into his mind. Someone had been murdered in his house. Not just murdered, but tortured.

The more he thought about it, the faster he wanted to get out of the house. As quietly and quickly as he could, he made his way back outside. Nienna was still sitting in the car, looking worried.

As he came stumbling out of the house, she got out of the car. He yelled at her to get into the drivers seat, start the engine and lock the doors. That made her even more nervous, but she did what he said.

It started to rain.

Eruantion's body started to tremble as he made his way next door to his neighbors house, to see if they knew anything.

After a quick conversation with his neighbors, revealing that they didn't know anything, he turned on his cell phone to call the cops.

"You have three new messages." it called out, as soon as it had a signal. His heart dropped. He wondered if those phone calls had anything to do with this murder. His stomach told him, they did.

The first thing he did was call the police. He was unsure of whether or not he should listen to the messages before they got there. They might want to take the phone into evidence and see what they could extract from any information that might be on there.
He thought to himself that he was just getting ahead of himself, and it might not be anything at all.

He pressed the button for his voicemail.

Hello, My Precious

"You have three new messages." the phone calmly said into his ear. "First unheard message:"
Eruantion held his breath, waiting for what he was sure to be a horrible message.

"Hello, Mr. Duriath. This is Bill from freevaccines.com!--" Eruantion let out a sigh, and hit the delete button. Maybe it wasn't going to be so bad.

"Hey, I just got here, and I think I am alone. I don't see him anywhere. I'm at the house. Call me back when you get this." This message unnerved Eruantion. The voice was familiar, but he didn't know who it was. He guessed it was the man in his bedroom.
He saved the message, and prepared himself for the next one.

The message started out quiet. Eruantion listened for a second, and thought he heard a muffled yelp. Eruantion's insides started to turn...

There was another small yelp, and then a second later, a blood curtling scream. The muffled sound of flesh being torn from a body. More screams. Then the sound of a knife being sharpened on a wet stone. Again, more screaming.
What sounded like a welding torch being lit...

Eruantion couldn't bare to listen to any more. He saved the message and looked at his wife. Nienna looked through the windshield at him, the glass starting to fog up. Rain poured down even harder. His hair fell into his eyes, and water dripped off his nose.

The sound of sirens was getting close. Eruantion did not know what to do. He was alone, in the rain and the dark. A body was in his bedroom mutilated beyond recognition, and he had had the power to stop it.

For Heaven's Sake

A couple minutes later, the police arrived. Eruantion was still standing out in the middle of the downpour, unsure of what to do. He was still in shock.

When the police arrived, Nienna got out of the van and ran over to Eruantion and clasped her arms around him. He was cold, pale, and wasn't really responding.

The police quickly secured the area, and put caution tape up around the house. An ambulance arrived a couple minutes later, followed by the fire department, and then the medical examiner. A police officer led Nienna and Eruantion over to the ambulance, and got them situated.

Nienna looks Eruantion in the eyes, "What did you see in there?" she asked, unsure if she really wanted to know.
Eruantion just looked back at her, wanting to tell someone, but not wanting to make Nienna sick or even more worried than she already was. So he just shook his head "no", and looked past her.

Several police officers came out of the house, looking shaken. One of them lost his stomach in the petunias, then went to his car and sat down.

The fire department got the backup generator going, and flooded the house with light. The medical examiner then went inside.

After about half an hour, the medical examiner came out, wheeling the body in front of him. Nienna saw it, and gasped, finally putting the pieces together. Eruantion put his arm around her.

The medical examiner and one of the police officers came over to the ambulance where Eruantion and Nienna were still sitting. They explained the situation, and then the police officer asked if Eruantion and Nienna would come with him to the station for questioning, and give a statement.

Refreshing... Not.

After a while of sitting in an interogation room with cups of coffee, the officer in charge comes in. He appologizes about the wait, and then gets their statements.

"...and then, I checked my voicemail. I couldn't listen to all of the second message. I saved them for you." Eruantion finished, handing his phone over to the officer.

The officer thanked him for it, and put it in a plastic bag. "Alright, this is just standard procedure, but do you have any witnesses from last night that can verify your story?"

Eruantion described the waiter from the resturant to him, but that was the only witness he could think of. Other than the neighbors, but he wasn't sure if they would have been paying any attention.

"Alright. I have one last thing..." says the officer, getting out a small hand-held device with a smooth surface on one side, and a computer screen on the other. "I need to get your fingerprints and some DNA from each of you. Since it is your bedroom, we're going to have to seperate out some stuff, and it'll be easier if we can cross reference with this." he said, holding up the smooth side of the pad to Eruantion. "If you don't mind, that is." he added.

Eruantion placed each of his fingers onto the smooth surface individually, then placed his index finger over the hole that the officer told him to. It pricked his finger, and took a sample of blood.
Next, Nienna did the same thing.

This was going to be a really long night. They let Eruantion and Nienna go, but told them to stick around the station for a little while, because they might have more questions. Eruantion and Nienna went to the bench on the front wall of the station, and sat down. They were both exhausted, and tried not to fall asleep.

"Hey, I'm going to go get another cup of coffee and call Amonost to see if we can crash at his house for a while. Do you want anything?" Eruantion said to Nienna. She was falling asleep sitting on the bench, and leaning against the soda machine. She gestured "no" and closed her eyes again.

Eruantion walked over to the pay phone on the wall, and gave Amonost a call.

Talking Old Soldiers

The phone rang several times, almost to the point that Eruantion expected it to go to voicemail. And why wouldn't it? It was the wee hours of the night. But then again, this was Amonost.

The dial tone stopped and the ambient hiss from the other end came through the phone's speaker before Amonost's sigh.

"Uh, hey Eru. What's going on?" Amonost asked.

"Hey, hope I didn't wake you." Eruantion said, not really caring.

"Uh, yeah, you didn't." Amonost replied, smiling at the girl sitting on the couch next to him.

"Well, that's good. Alright... Where to begin. Gosh, I still can't quite make sense of it all." Eruantion said, picking at a spot on the wall. "Well, Nienna and I were out on a date, came home, and the house has been trashed. I went in and checked things out... and... well... man..." he paused for a second. "There was a body in our bedroom."

"A body." Amonost repeated, deadpan. He stood and headed out of the room, leaving the girl looking concerned. "Just... a body in your bedroom? I mean... What?"

"Yeah, pretty fragged up, huh?" Eruantion sighed, turned his back to the wall, and leaned against it. "Not just laying there, either. Hanging from our ceiling. Blood everywhere... and I don't think it was just a random act."

Amonost grimaced, imagining the scene. "Well, you're not going to sleep again for the next week." he muttered. Inappropriate, given the circumstances, but too late now. "You need a place to stay? I've got, uh, company, but it wouldn't be a problem."

Eruantion ignored the first comment. "Well, I appreciate it. Need me to call before we come over?"

"Only if you're going to be a while," Amonost replied. He leaned around the corner of the doorway to look back at the cute girl on his couch. How unfortunate that he was going to have to kick her out, but this was serious.

"Alright. I don't know how long we are going to be, so I'll just call and let you know either way." Eruantion said, bumping his head lightly against the block wall.

Amonost took a breath. "This is just some kind of hosed up. Do you know who... the body was?" he asked.

"No, I have no idea who it is. It could be you for all the good that identifying would do." Eruantion replied.

"Yeah. I mean, no, I've got all my blood, but I get your point." Amonost muttered, pausing before changing the subject. "I'll get the guest bed made. See you guys in a bit."

"Alright."

"Alright."

"... Alright."

Eruantion hung up. Amonost pocketed his phone and stepped back into the living room. This was going to be awkward.

Let Lions Lay

Around five o'clock in the morning, Eruantion and Nienna arrived at Amonost's place. It took a couple times of ringing the front door bell for Amonost to finally get up and answer it. He looked like death warmed over.

The first thing Eruantion and Nienna did when they arrived, was take a shower. Their clothes were still soaking wet from all the rain, and their bodies resembled prunes.
After they got out of the hot shower, they wrapped up in towels and put their clothes in the wash.

It didn't take them long to get settled in to the bedroom, as they had no clothing, and no other belongings to unpack.

Eruantion layed in bed all night, staring at the ceiling, and watching Nienna sleep. Nienna didn't sleep very well, but at least she did sleep a little.

At about eight o'clock, Eruantion got up and put the clothes in the dryer, and then went to go make a fresh pot of coffee. It took him quite some time to get a cleanish mug, because he had to wash the milk scum out of the bottom.

The newspaper arrived at roughly nine thirty, and he went out to get it. He wasn't sure if he really wanted to, but he hoped against all odds that they hadn't heard about last night's incident yet.

The headlines read:
Murder at Local Mercenary's House!

So much for that.

Over the course of the next couple days Eruantion and Nienna got several calls from friends, telling them that they were sorry for his ordeal. Eruantion really didn't know how to respond, so just gave a blanket "thanks" and left it at that.

Conspiracy?

About a week later, a police officer showed up at the door of Amonost's house, and wanted to talk to both Eruantion and Nienna. He looked a little perplexed, and almost had an accusational look in his eyes.

"Mr. and Mrs. Doriath, would you sit down please?" the officer started off.
"Alright. I have a couple more questions, if you don't mind." he asked, raising an eyebrow, after they had sat themselves on the couch. They nodded, indicating that was fine.

"First off, for you Mr. Doriath... Are you positive you did not touch the body in any way?" he asked, and then got his pencil ready to write on his pad, everything Eruantion said.

"No, I am absolutely sure I didn't. I walked in, saw the body, and turned around and walked out. Didn't disturb anything." Eruantion replied, wondering where this conversation was headed.

"And you, Mrs. Doriath... you never entered the room at any time... that is correct, yes?" he asked, and Nienna shook her head in agreement.

"And you claim you have never had a child?" he was addressing both of them. A very skeptical look crossed over his face.
"No, we've never had a child! I think we would know." Eruantion retorted, seeing the look on the officer's face.

The officer stood there staring at both of them for a moment. He paced back and forth for a second, looking for the right words to say. He decided there was no good way to say it, and just put it to them.
"Well, we compaired the DNA from the body to the blood samples that you gave us... and it appears... Well, it appears that the victim was your son." he finished, watching them for their responces.

Eruantion and Nienna looked at each other, unsure of what to say. "Are you sure you're not mistaken?" Eruantion said after a minute.

"Positive." replied the officer.

"Well, I am not sure how that could be. We've never had a child, like I told you." Eruantion said, not quite sure what to say or do.

"Do you know a Dr. Tao Deesle?" the officer asked after a short pause.
"No... Should I?" Eruantion asked in repy, still confused.

"Well, one of our detectives was looking at the writing on the wall in your room, and discovered that it had a hidden name written in it. Dr. Tao Deesle." The officer paused, looking for any signs of recognicion, then continued.
"Dr. Tao Deesle, it turns out... is a fairly small time scientist, trying to make a name for himself. His field is in that of time travel."
