Starcey

Character Name: Starcey Crystal

Age: 17

Gender: F

Species: Human

Description: In short, Starcey looks like a Terran 1950's greaser, only a girl.

Her hair is naturally pitch-black. Something causes it to retain a strange shine, but it's not stiff. She keeps it cut short (but not boy-short) because then it stays out of the way, it can be easily hidden under a hat or cap, people can't grab it, and so on. The list of benefits of short hair is long, and so she cuts it short.

Starcey generally wears a black leather jacket, a purple scarf (more useful than just a kerchief), black jeans, and boots. The boots aren't extremely heavy, but they're certainly not girly. A few unlucky dudes have discovered those boots are steel-toed, and she is not afraid to use them, if you know what I'm saying.

Her demeanor is superficially crude - she has cultivated a sometimes unhealthy disrespect for social norms. She smokes tobacco, spits on the sidewalk, sneers at passersby, and speaks with the vocabulary of a sailor. Growing up on Micc with only the slightest magical ability has fostered this attitude, since socializing is based heavily on magic use. A social outcast, she lashes out at the establishment by flaunting her rebellion against it. She feels it's unfair - after all, she has other skills...

History: She was raised on Micc, but that's not really where she belongs. Her father - Rock Crystal - was a powerful mafioso on Cerania, in the Mircor System. He had his fingers in a whole lot of pies. Power begat wealth, a wife that married him for political gain, and a network of underground informants, connections, suppliers, movers, pushers, enforcers...

But, as is usually the case, some of those pies started biting back. Backs were stabbed, "bought" officials came clean, and suddenly Cerania didn't really seem so pleasant anymore - and certainly not safe.

He had to flee with his wife and newly born daughter. A close friend - one of the few contacts he could still trust - smuggled magical machinery from Micc for distribution on Cerania, and agreed to take the Crystal family along to pay back a favor.

Once there, without the threat of arrest or assassination, it seemed that Rock would live out his life in peace with his family. His past had other ideas, and followed him to Micc. Without the network or threat of retribution to protect him from his pursuers, Rock's death quickly followed. Starcey found her father's body - throat slit - at the breakfast table at home on a lazy Sunday morning, at the age of six. The murderer was never found, the murder weapon never recovered. The doors and windows were locked and bolted from the inside. Her mother was out getting groceries at the time. The mystery is still unsolved, as it will most likely remain.

The local officials quickly swept the whole thing under the rug, preferring to keep a clean image and forget about the invaders from Cerania. The surviving family - Starcey and her mother Sugar - kept enough of the old money to maintain a comfortable lifestyle and donated the rest to charity, hoping to rid themselves of their dubious past.

Starcey grew up to be a reticent teenager. She behaved well enough at home with her mother, but in public she was a nuisance at best. Repeatedly caught for stealing, vandalism, and other misdemeanors, she made her displeasure at her living situation well-known.
She does have magical abilities, but they are subtle and unappreciated. When her mother wanted to put her in an academy to learn some discipline at 16 and keep her out of trouble, she refused, moved out on her own and started working at a mechanics shop instead.

She still works there, on paper, but rarely if ever shows up. She makes her real money gambling - cards, dice, that sort of thing. Betting on fights or races is just not quite as interesting...unless you have a hand in it. What her goals are, nobody knows but her. She's very strong and very clever, and it would seem a waste of her talents to just live like a low-life. People talk, and people see, and they have started noticing she tends to single out the most powerful people she comes across, gain their trust, ... but for what purpose?

Item(s): Very huge handgun she keeps locked to her motorcycle (see below). Switchblade knife.

Ship/Vehicle: I'd like to make my own vehicle, but maybe tomorrow or something. It's just a motorcycle. It also happens to have a mega plutonium power source, so it never needs refueling (barring a leak, of course), and could reach Mach 3 if the ground effect of the sonic boom were magically suppressed. It doesn't have wings or jet engines or anything crazy - it just rolls on wheels like any other bike. Just one with a ridiculous powertrain. It means more to her than just a crazy ride - it's essentially the only thing kept from her father's acquisitions.

Note: My brother is playing Lao-Tzu, and he told me about this thing. I read the thread and would like to join it, so that's why I created this character. If you don't think it really fulfills the Daireem criteria, just let me know and I'll do another one. It was just fun to sit and write for an hour.

Description and history are excellent. Going to have to wait on the details on that vehicle before I approve it though. Smile

I'd like a description on that "very huge handgun" too. Even if a major item like that was given to your character, it affects the amount of money you start with, so I need to be able to put a price on it. The switchblade, too; is it a high quality or otherwise expensive item, or a middle-of-the-road, or a cheap gas station souvenir? Smile

RE: Starcey

I  thought I listed them in the shop?

The handgun was a H&K Mark 23, and the knife the CRKT M1 Lightfoot.

Is that alright?

Ah, you must not have checked the "Use Shop" box or something. The shop is obsolete anyway, so you shouldn't use it. (We really need to just remove it, but nobody wants to mess with the forum's code. XD)

Yes, that's fine.

RE: Starcey

Ah, I see the checkbox that I missed. Gotcha.

Ok, so the motorcycle, in more detail:
Model: Custom Street Bike
Manufacturer: Originally Suzuki (search Google for 2009 Hayabusa), but quite a few different hands have worked on this beast - most recently Starcey Crystal.
Type: 2-Wheeled ground vehicle.
Length: 2190 mm
Armaments: Custom holster for an H&K Mark 23 handgun.

To the uninitiated, it appears to be just an ordinary motorcycle. It looks, sounds, feels, and even smells just like a souped-up Suzuki. Some of those in the biz, however, might notice that something is a little off. Like there's something... more.

The real power supply in this sportbike is not the fossil fuel internal combustion engine that it simulates, nor is it a plasma chamber, or a even a zero-point-energy leech, which would be really cool, but still quite legal. There is a solid rod of plutonium surrounded by a nanotube structure that converts the radiation to torque, using quantum mechanical techniques. This machine could exceed Mach 3, if it weren't for the devastating sonic boom interacting with the ground.

Although the engine itself purely follows the laws of physics, its construction is so delicate and complicated it can only be achieved with magic. The engine is outlawed because of the plutonium - and if that wasn't enough, the nanotube structure causes a very unstable situation if the casing cracks - something not unlikely given that controlling a motorcycle at supersonic speeds is ... shall we say, tricky?

What's the attraction of this machine? Why spend so much time, money, and sweat to build something like this? It'd be cheaper and easier to get a spaceship!
Its elegance - even though it's ridiculously overpowered, the thrust still comes from the wheel making contact with the road. The longevity - the core stays reactive enough (87% plutonium) for three millenia before it needs replacing, usually far beyond the life expectancy of the vehicle. The danger - if that casing cracks, the radiation will cause fatal radiation poisoning instantly. That's not really a worry though, because there will be carbon particles spraying in all directions, each little piece spinning unreasonably fast, with their extremities approaching the speed of light.

The engineers and magicians who originally built the engine enchanted the construction with cloaking magic so it appears to be a 1340 cc, 4-stroke, liquid-cooled, fuel injection internal combustion engine to most observers.

Encountering a law enforment officer on this motorcycle, though, especially if he's a magic user, can be a harrowing experience and is not recommended. Furthermore, Mach 3 is incredibly fast for ground vehicles, and even for most atmospheric fliers, but no match for anything space-capable, so using it to just run away from trouble is not really possible. Besides, all a detective would have to do is follow the path of blast damage left behind by the sonic boom...

Let me know if this thing is way too ridiculous or if it's permitted. If you think it's questionable, I'll just get a normal motorcycle, say it's souped up, and maybe put some James Bond gadgets on it (caltrops and oil slicks, for instance).

RE: Starcey

And here is a post about Starcey's magical abilities.
I'd mentioned them before, but very very vaguely. It's probably best they get formalized here. A lot of this is copied directly from a PM exchange between Raelan Wathuru and I.

Mach 3 on the ground is a really good way to get killed without some sort of precognitive power. That would also explain her skill at gambling, and dice, know when to fold, when to bluff, when to play it out... and would definitely make fights and races boring and far less productive... which is perfect, because otherwise her reckless nature would destroy her. She generally stays away from dangerous races and walks away from fights - she is not the fastest, nor the strongest, but maaaaybe she is the cleverest.

Also slight telekinesis (think sleight-of-hand++), the ability to go unnoticed, influencing someone's perception is a subtle way. Nothing huge, just some stuff to dull the edge of not really having magic powers like most of the others on Micc.

It's a different kind of magic that what is usually displayed. Starcey doesn't "cast spells" - she just focuses in a special way, and things turn out to work out a little better than usual. When she focuses in that particular manner and thinks about what she's doing and everything that's going on, she generally gets a pretty good gut feeling, and she's learned (the hard way) to trust it.

RE: Starcey

That's really more like what I like to see on Daireem anyway. Smile Big time mages and wizards are really hard to come by except on Micc and parts of Meeriad. Heck, most people probably don't even know they exist. XD
