Echos of the Sky

It was one of those days today, where a chilling wind blew across the barren wasteland that was once called civilization. Where the clouds - or what was left of them - were dark and depressing and where a small kick of a can could echo through the streets with little resistance.

It had been a few days since the Rippovs had a patrol come by this specific city, though Essasia knew they were always checking someplace out, always hungry for destruction and death. On days like these, while causaly going about places and gathering supplies, she pondered on why these creatures were so determined to kill.

Maybe she once knew why, but she had forgotten it now and the memory was lost to her. Though, since she didn't remember anything before a year ago, she could only guess at what she knew, who she loved, and even who she hated.

She sighed to herself as she entered a long dead store with cans of food still stacked in places on the shelves. She looked over them slowly, deciding which ones she liked and which she didn't and which ones she had, had before... though she took them all.

Her sword swinged slightly at her waist, a treasure she was never seen without, even in sleep she'd keep it by her side. Her magics, her Sword Skills depended on it and with these blood-thirsty beasts, she depended on it.

She spun a little and by mistake tipped a can over and it dropped to the floor, easily sending an echo across the empty street outside. Though she hadn't heard anything for a while, she paused, making sure she didn't alert anything dangerous ...

A few moments passed with no response to the sound. The dead were heavy sleepers, and, evidently, that's all there was here.

Although, a minute later, through the whistling wind, those of keen ears could hear a quiet mechanical hissing, pulsing.

And drawing closer to Essasia.

She sighed in relief as nothing came within the first few moments and started to collect some of the can again, though staying quiet, as one always had to be cautious on Wist.

She didn't hear the hissing at first, but after a short while she paused to make sure she actually did hear something other than the wind. When she realized it was the hissing of some sort of machinery, she slowly stuffed her bag of cans behind the freezers that long ceased to work and pulled her sword out slowly. She entered the freezers as well, knowing there was a big enough space to walk around in - like a small hallway - and also had several doors to exit from if she needed to.

Friend or foe, one could never be too careful and she positioned some of the old-rotten T.V. Dinners and such so it was harder to see her and yet gave her a way to watch the doorway. She ignored the bad smell as she stood perfectly still and patient...

The hissing was close, but still quiet. It couldn't be anything particularly big. A moment later, it stopped, but the acoustics of the hollow store made it difficult to pinpoint where it stopped.

A small circular object, a mirror from the looks of it, came into view around the doorway, attached to a small rod. It couldn't be seen what was holding it.

The mirror slowly shifted, probably giving its operator a view all around the store, and then disappeared back outside.

A person stepped through the doorway. It would be hard to say if it was Rippov, the light from outside making it merely a black silhouette. What could be made out was long hair, a very uneven outline—not appearing to be any regular clothes—and a small rifle at a low ready.

She stayed quiet and still as the figure entered the store, shifting her head just a little to see if she could see around the light. She grumbled under her breath as she couldn't a clear view, but she hadn't known any Rippovs to have hair, so it was likely it was another survivor.

She slowly opened the door and stepped out, raising her free hand as if to surrender, but keeping alert incase whomever it was decided to shoot at her. She really needed to learn an invisibility spell, it was just too bad that magic was an all but dead practice outside of the elven culture.

The figure quickly turned the rifle toward Essasia, but lowered it just as fast.

Person: A... human?

The voice was obviously that of a woman, but not particularly feminine. She glanced toward the front of the store, then back at Essasia. The outside remained quiet. The woman took a few steps forward out of the direct lighting, revealing some sort of copper exoskeleton adorning most of her body, covered in pistons, tubes, and hoses. As she moved, it hissed.

Woman: It's been a long time since I saw a human...

"Yes, it's been a while since I've seen any survivors around here ... I'm Essasia." She slowly  put her sword back at her hip and pulled the bag of supplies from behind the freezer and set it aside. "And you are?" she offered a soft, pleasant smile.

The woman just looked at Essasia for a moment, as if trying to form an answer.

Woman: Kasey.

She steps over to one of the front windows of the store and looks out, scanning the street.

Kasey: Where are you headed?

"To my place... it's hidden so it's safe. Where are you headed?" she asked in return, taking up the bag again and walking towards the exit of the store and examining the woman a little. She got to the door and swung it open a little, looking down the streets as well.

Kasey: Nowhere fast if I don't find some clean water.

She looked toward the cluster of empty jugs hanging on a strap from her waist.

Kasey: Some people take water for granted until they have a steam-powered body.

Without a further word, she turned and walked further into the store, looking for something. Where better to find clean water than a general store? But as suddenly as she departed on this mission, she returned, looking no more disappointed and nodding for Essasia to proceed out the door.

Kasey had been here longer than she could remember and had come to expect the worst in everything. Pessimism and a strong belief in Murphy's law at least resulted in never being disappointed, but the constant negative mental state was questionable on her health—what little health she had, considering she had artificial legs.
