Here comes a new challenger

Hi everyone!  I just stumbled across this site, and I'd totally love to play and write.

Two questions:
1. It's awfully quiet on the forums.  Is this place dying, or is it just a seasonal lull?
2. Anyone have a convenient opening in a party?  I'm willing to play almost anything or anyone you have a need for.

If no one makes a suggestion for #2, I intend on a character who starts and runs a Street Fighter-like tournament. Or a cyborg with the objective of building a Von Neumann machine. Or a human trying to stop it.  Dangit, you see why I need you guys to answer question 2.  Or if anyone is interested in the ideas I typed, let me know and we can play that Wink

Hey there QuantumTroll!

1. This place isn't dying. It died. Wink It comes and goes, but as soon as somebody new joins it tends to get going pretty good. One of our other members who disappeared for a while happened to show up recently, so hopefully things will speed up about now.

2. I don't know about a party opening in an existing thread, but my character Valerie (who happens to be an ex-underground fighter) isn't involved in anything at the moment if you want to go with the street fighter idea. Smile

Anyway, welcome to Daireem! I look forward to some more activity here!

Cool, I can live with that if you're not leaving/killing the site Wink

I think I might be able to convince a buddy of mine (also a wannabe sci-fi author) to join in.

Expect more details in a post this weekend.

Yeah, I'm coming back. Finally got the time ... things settling down in real life and such. I'm playing my android on Micc right now, if you want to take a shot at that as well - or your friend. It's a magical-inclined planet though, it seems. Blah

S.T.A.R is one awesome android.  Your story was a fun read, but it's too over-the-top for my tiny human brain Blah

I've decided to go for Cerania to start off.  Street Fighter with a background of sky-pirates and lots of gambling just seems like it would work.

So yeah, I'll be writing up a character now.

One more thing, though.  Why does it say "Szyren, don't forget to post as Balinor." above this textbox?  I'm guessing someone made a boo-boo when they edited the site...

Haha, the Szyren thing was Wolf fooling around. It can probably be taken off now. Wink

Szyren had two characters and kept forgetting to switch accounts to post as the correct character, that's all, hehe.

As for Star, yeah ... it's a little bit into the .. heavier sci-fi (?) with all those robot terms, military conspiracies, and experimental alien technology. Blah

Either way, glad we got a hold of you. Wink

You could say that I got a hold of myself Wink

So now I have a character, a vehicle, a world, and the germ of a plot.  Almost ready to start.

But first, I want to ask a couple questions about Cerania.  The air traffic is an important part of the character of the planet, but it is not clear why it's like this.

Could  we make the surface of the planet geologically unstable, so roads and tracks cannot be made permanent?  That would limit travel to air, sea, and off-road vehicle. If you want, I can write a little description of Ceranian geology. Smile

Another peculiarity is the structure of the law.  Somehow they try to outlaw weapons on airplanes, but there are roving gangs of armed villains.  Could you say something about the political situation and how the law is actually enforced on the ground and in the air?

RE: Here comes a new challenger

The prominence of air travel is because of a variety of things depending on where you are: geological instability in some regions; sparse populations in others, making for long drives; just general lack of road maintenance, and others. With technology advancements it would probably be simple to overcome the problems with ground-based travel, but aircraft have become so inexpensive and so ingrained in the Ceranian culture that nobody has the desire.

As for law, mostly it's just minimal law enforcement in a small government; they don't have the manpower to do much so they just twiddle their thumbs instead of coming up with a solution. If they feel like making an example of someone, they'll catch them at the airstrip and arrest them. Law enforcement tends to concentrate their efforts on places they deem more important; big, government controlled cities.

Regardless of official enforcement, the disregard for the illegality of weapons goes both ways; otherwise law abiding citizens who don't want to get caught defenseless by armed bandits will arm their craft anyway--they're just a little more secretive about it. Wink
