RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Lao-tzu smiled at Starcey's dubious look.  "What happened in the workshop was entirely my fault. I think I know what Raelan has in mind and can assure you that it is quite safe."

To Dante's first question, he said, "If there was an easy way of increasing one's affinity to magic, then nobody would be doing it the hard way."

When Dante almost crooned his request for a private audience, Lao-tzu wondered at the extreme change in tone but simply nodded and said, "Of course.  But then I will look at Raelan's crystal a moment so I can provide him some restitution."

Raelan smiled slightly, "I won't do anything big, can't really right now anyway. I'm under the impression that magic is like a muscle, the more you work it and stretch it the stronger it will get. However I definitely maxed out mine earlier...

Now as far as spells, you can put more energy into them, that can make them stronger, depending on the spell. If you want to increase size, effectiveness, or anything like that you probably have to change how it's made, if just slightly."

He got onto his feet, "I'll demonstrate. Come outside when you're ready, I'll set up a large-ish detection sphere, it will take a little bit of time in this state, but not very long. I can always practice some small tricks while I wait if you take your time. And Lao-Tsu, don't worry too much about compensation, I learned a few valuable things about a couple spells I use, now I can manipulate them more to see what else they can do."

He exited the cottage, and blinked again at the discrepancy. The door was definitely bigger on the inside, so that was the trick. Ha! So simple, space borrowing is a waste of time if you can just shrink everything inside!

Shaking his head at the blatant obviousness he'd failed to see he began to focus on creating, and enlarging a detection sphere. His cybernetic hand glowed in the kaleidoscope of colors with the enchantments placed on it, and his pale wings, and tail gently shifted colors lazily, reds and greens mostly. And gently the sphere grew to cover a decent patch of ground.

Starcey followed Raelan outside, but stayed well away. Watching someone performing magic always had a certain thrill, and this time it was no different.

As the sphere grew, it revealed the hillside itself was alive with magic.  The tall grass, waving in the breeze, glowed softly in shifting patterns while the air itself adopted faint hues of blue and yellow.

At one point, a red swirling shape came into the sphere, swooped around once, and then left.  Nothing real was visible, and Raelan had never seen anything like it.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Raelan stared, He'd never seen a magical entity without a body, and the plantlife so full. "What is this place? Is all of Micc like this?" Turning, he saw Starcey, the other two hadn't made it out yet. "No need to worry, this is completely safe, a very gentle spell, I use it when enchanting my equipment, or to see magical things that are going on. You could say, it makes light cling to the tendrils of magic, the orientation of the magic determines the color of light. He took a deep breath, and bits of wispy fog are pulled from the plants around him into Raelan as he draws in some of their magic, his wings and tail become slightly less transparent.

"That is what I mean by magic created by living things, even people all have at least a little, some even use some of it without ever knowing. Really, if one was incapable of improving their own energy capacity, they could use a generator of some sort, and siphon off of it to cast, but it works better when you use your own. Step inside if you like you won't feel a thing, and it won't hurt you."

Raelan tends to keep his aura mostly compacted inside his body, except for the growth of the dragon parts, which is mildly unusual, most people have at least some hovering in the air around themselves. A flow of energy pulses down his arm, and collects in his left hand, chosen for best visibility it has a greenish look to it, with some orange swirling, and traces of blue, he glances at this and his smile flickered for a second, accompanied by a slight cough of embarrassment. He twisted his wrist from palm up to palm out, and the energy went from the pale before mentioned colors to strands of dedicated red, blue, purple, and a tiny bit of green, these meld together into what almost looked like a hand as it reached out and encompassed a small rock dragging it toward, and then away from Raelan at his gesture.

"I'm not as good at the telekinesis as most Keifan..."

He cuts the flow off from his hand and the string of energy dissipates, lingering for just a little bit on the rock itself. "Totally changes the mystique of magic doesn't it? Almost seems like mechanics, I like it that way." Since he was here, and remembered at the moment, he began inspecting his cybernetic arm for any physical, or magical chinks, and pulled a small tool out of his pocket to tighten a few of the huge mesh of wires that made the surface of the limb soft enough not to bruise people with common contact. He was just happy that his permanent enchantments had survived Lao-Tsu's magic absorber, but they will probably need to be restrengthened because they didn't come out unscathed.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Starcey didn't like the idea of invisible ghosts at all, but reasoned that they were probably harmless - given she spent a couple of days outside with them already!

She gingerly stepped closer to the magical sphere, and studied its surface. It was completely invisible; the only hint that there was a sphere there was that the magical tendrils and points of glittering light instantly disappear when moving out, and come into being - out of nothing - when crossing the interface inwards.

Taking a deep breath, she took the final step into the sphere.

Unspectacular.

She didn't feel a thing - the only thing noticable was that she was surrounded by a faint yellowish-orange glow. As she stood and observed, it slowly faded in intensity and turned a much warmer shade of orange.

Raelan would have noticed that the orange color was actually a mixture of yellow fear and red passion - love and anger inextricably combined. The effect was not unlike transparent flames rolling up her body.

"How do I ... do stuff?" Starcey asked him. As she asked the question, she pointed her hand at a patch of ground, and tried imagining the orange flowing towards it in the same way that she could affect the patterns and shapes she sees on the back of her eyelids in the dark. The effect on her aura was subtle, and she wasn't quite sure if she accomplished something real or if she just imagined it - wishful thinking.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Raelan turned to face her, and paused thoughtfully at the question, as well as the aura. "Well, you have been doing something with that aura, maybe you're not as magically bereft as you thought. As Lao-Tsu said casting is different for each person, if I forced you into my casting style, you would lose, or forget your particular talents if you could even make it work at all. We will go with a basic exercise, for awareness. Close your eyes and concentrate on your dominant hand, erase everything you can from your mind for the moment, you are safe, you will be protected. Right now there is only your hand."

As he said that the swirl of energy unconsciously developed over his right hand, the swirl was a little less green dominated this time, but it was hard to tell with the hand's enchantments. He didn't expect too much, but he was hoping she could at least collect enough energy there to be discernible. He wanted to teach her to recognize what flowing energy felt like, so she could tell when she was using it. This was the first step. Even if she couldn't properly clear her mind he hoped enough focus would come through to move the under-aware muscle of the energy.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

He looked around to make sure no one was listening. Dante's gaze rested on Lao-Tzu after a moment of silence he began. His voice was nervous "It's possible...I mean increasing someone's magical ability. There is an expirimental form of magic called 'Magic Augmentation'". Dante took a deep breath and continued "It's main purpose is to enhance existing spells but it requires much preparation so it is almost impossible to use effectivly for everyday spellcasting". He seemedto debate something in his head, his teeth clenched, hands turned to fists. He relaxed "Well a theory within the magic is that one can increase someone's magical potency it's very difficult...and well..." His voice trailed off.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Lao-tzu listened intently to Dante.  The man was clearly struggling.  In the laboratory he had had a nosebleed, yet was quite capable of redirecting the chaotic magic around him to keep unharmed.  That discrepancy had piqued the wizard's curiosity at the time but he couldn't make anything of it yet.  Perhaps the key was whatever it was that Dante was gearing himself up to say.

The sage nodded and said, "I did not say that there was no way to increase one's magical affinity, I merely stated that there was no easy way.  That answer seems to have satisfied the other two, but you know what is behind it.  I will tell you of what I know, and then perhaps you can tell me what you want to tell me."

Lao-tzu got out his electronic tome of magic, his unofficial Encyclopedia Magicka, and paged through it.  "We've already covered the fact that magic is a force that follows rules set by the assumptions of the wielder. Under certain conditions it has been possible to effect a tremendous improvement in magical potency through the exploitation of these rules."

"Ah, here is the entry I was looking for. On Meeriad there are some arcane arts that allow the rite, and the tradition spread to Micc some century ago. It is a very serious undertaking, a proper preparation requiring months. Hmm, there are some similarities with the more common ritual of choosing a specialization, indicating that the target of the rite must give something up to receive the boon."

Closing the 'book', Lao-tzu said, "Beyond that, I don't know much except some of the practical details.  The reason that keeps the practice from becoming widespread is left open for speculation."

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Starcey did as Raelan suggested, closing her eyes and focusing on her right hand.

At first her aura spiked yellow at the fear of closing her eyes in the midst of all the flowing magical energies around her, but the flare mellowed out to the same orange color as before, and gradually her aura left her feet, then her legs, her midsection, her left hand, and her left arm. By now the aura collecting in her right arm - especially her right hand - was a bright mass of color. The reds and yellows were clearly dominant, but Raelan could discern some greens, blues, and purples there as well. He could also see some aura remaining around her lungs and heart, at the soles of her feet, and every time the wind shifted direction, the aura would billow out around her.

The effect was caused simply by forgetting or ignoring as much of herself as she could, but she was clearly unversed in meditation. Even so, she showed remarkable progress.

Then Starcey opened her eyes to look at her right hand. It frightened her quite a bit, and her aura seared a fierce yellow along her whole arm. Such a powerful, piercing light - it looked like her arm was exploding! Starcey was terrified, blowing up the aura by another order of magnitude.

Raelan lied! I'm dying! That son-of-a-slug!

The yellow was joined by huge waves of furious red, twisting the whole display into a convincing inferno.

"Nooooo!" she screamed, enveloped in flame.

Raelan got worried - at first he thought it was a little funny that she got worked up about completely harmless visual effects, but it quickly got serious. This would be a good lesson for her, so he didn't turn off the detection sphere.

"Starcey! Listen to me! Calm. Yourself. Down. It's just like a holovid - nothing more. Listen to me! As soon as you're chill, things will calm down."

Starcey didn't like all this crud. Calm down? Now? Get real, Raelan! I'm on fire! Ummm... maybe not. I guess it doesn't really hurt...
She started to realize the visual effect was so convincing and so shocking that she had felt real pain, but it was just in her head. But dang, Raelan's really a frakking rectal orifice! Like - way to friggin warn me!

The flames turned darker - redder. But not less intense.

Raelan was pretty sure that it wasn't love she was feeling at the moment.

Suddenly a purple-and-blue bolt shot from her forehead to RaelanĀ“s, briefly formed a connection, and then faded from sight.

On the other hand, I guess he was just trying to help. Introducing me to magic - and there was no way he could have known I would react so strongly... she thought to herself. The red flames diminished considerably, and she struggled to calm down, telling herself it was all an illusion, and trying not to think about that strange bolt - whatever it was.

The yellow flames also retreated, past the point where the glow of her aura was the same ethereal orange that it was at the beginning. Eventually it was just a faint shimmering yellow - nearly indetectable to the untrained eye.

Starcey walked out of the sphere and sat down, exhausted and ashamed, against the cottage wall.
