RE: Questionable Means

They walked out to the beach where plenty of people were already gathered, sunbathing. Their purses and wallets were left sitting on the ends of their towels, easy to snatch. The only problem was if someone else saw them do it and made noise about it.

Ishkan looked around at several people laying out in the sunlight. Trying to pick out the easiest target was harder when most everyone was half un-dressed. You pick a mark by their clothing.

"See anyone with an expensive pair of sunglasses?" Ishkan asked, his arms folded across his chest and leaning against a palm tree. "That's the only good givaway I can think of. Unless you have any ideas?" he asked, turning to Tawny.

Over her shoulder he spotted a woman with a large pair of sunglasses on. She was wearing several necklaces and rings on each finger. He cleared his throat and nodded for Tawny to see where he was looking.
Down at the end of her towel was a white purse with tiny jewels imbedded into the two straps. There were a pair of high heels next to it.

"High heels at a beach?" Ishkan asked Tawny when she turned back around to face him. "And jewelry? I think she's begging for us to go see her." he smirked.

RE: Questionable Means

Tawny eyed the woman up and down, as far as she could see, she was definitely their best bet.

"Okay," she murmured to Ishkan. "I'll distract her, maybe get her to take a few things off, you see if you can grab anything without being noticed."

With that, Tawny took a deep breath, smoothed her shirt, put on the brightest smile she could manage, and walked over to the woman.

As it was, luck appeared to be on their side, because even though Tawny's eye was malfunctioning quite a bit, the woman stirred up a name in the database.

"Leslie?" Tawny asked with the best amount of surprise she could muster. The woman looked over at her. "Leslie Milles is that you? I haven't seen you in ages!"

It was basic nature to avoid embarrasment, which is why the woman smiled, though Tawny could clearly see the confusion in it, and said hello as Tawny jogged up to her.

"It has been too long! I've tried sending you a few messages but you never reply." Pause for three seconds to let the confusion set in, then present name like it's information she should have burned into her skull. "It's Jenny, remember? Geeze, I know it's been a while, but it can't have been *that* long."

Two seconds, and then a clearly faked recognition passed over the woman. "Oh, Jenny! I didn't recognize you!"

Tawny fiddled with her hair. "Got a haircut, regret it with every fiber of my being."

They both laughed at that and Tawny sat down next to her, listening to old memories that Leslie made up on the spot and occcasionally interjecting.

RE: Questionable Means

"Honey, you rushed off and left me just standing there." Ishkan said, walking up to Tawny and Leslie. "Friend of yours?" he asked, smiling and offering a hand to the woman.

After exchanging names, he asked if she minded him sitting down next to her while her and Tawny "caught up". He positioned himself with his back to the purse, practically sitting on it. Leslie seemed oblivious.

He smiled up at the sky and took a deep breath, closing his eyes. The sound of Leslie's voice talking once again to Tawny let him know it was time to start. He leaned back on his hands, poisitioning one of them practically inside the purse, and began work on subtley removing objects from it.

After several minutes of sifting through all the objects by feeling, he was pretty certain he'd cleaned it out of all useful items. From what he could tell, it'd been a fairly nice load.
"Well dear, I hate to cut your time with Leslie short, but we really must be going." he put on his most sorrowful expression.

RE: Questionable Means

"Oh," she said sadly, giving Leslie a hug as she and Ishkan stood up. "Don't hold back on contacting me for so long next time," she added as she pulled back, smiling.

A few more words exchanged and then she and Ishkan left, disappearing into the crowd and out of her sight.

"It was nice to catch up like that," Tawny remarked. "I don't see that woman nearly as much as I should." She smirked slightly. "So what did you think of my 'old friend', 'honey'?"

RE: Questionable Means

"Oh yes, she was very nice. I can see why you two got along so well back in school." He smiled at her, then put his a hand into his pocket and gave it a shake. The sound of metal clacking together was heard. "And she's very well off... or was."

They did this once or twice more before they decided to call it a day on the beach. Soon someone would be missing their things and recognize them as the ones who stole their goods.

Unfortunately for them, for every extra minute they spent with each victim was another minute that their victim would recognize more about them when it came to describing their detail to the police. However luckily for them, there were plenty of other people around that were very similar to what they looked like. With a change of wardrobe and some makeup applied, they could hide for a while longer.

"Well, shall we buy some clothes? Maybe get you some hair dye while we're at it?" Ishkan said as they were passing by a store on the way back to their motel. "It'll help in more than one way. The police won't recognize us as easily, and maybe our 'friends' won't recognize us as quick either." he offered. "My treat." he cracked a smile.

RE: Questionable Means

"Sure," Tawny said dryly. "This outfit is starting to smell worse than usual. And I've always wanted to be a blonde."

They stopped by a cheap clothing store first, Tawny buying a blue tanktop with built-in bra, a new pair of pants, a small fedora, and a black jacket similar to a trenchcoat, it cost fourty-five tape.

They then went to the hair salon, Ishkan kept watch while Tawny got her hair cropped a bit, leaving it in a short cut excluding her bangs which remained long enough to cover her robotic eye, and bleached.

After all that was done, they returned to the motel and counted up what they estimated it was all worth.

RE: Questionable Means

"Alright, out of the three people we robbed blind..." he took all the money and items out of his pockets and placed it on the bed. He then emptied a small bag with some more things in it. "Swiped some stuff while we were at the store." he said, lifting up a few bracelets.

There was Tape1,641. Plus jewelry that would need to be sold off and other odds and ends that could barter with.

"Not bad for a half-day's work. However, it might be going too slow. Ships are too dang expensive. Maybe would could buy some fake ID and get a taxi off world?" he asked, frustrated. "I-- I... I'm going to get a shower." he finally said, grabbing his new clothes and heading to the bathroom. "Be thinking about anything else we could do to get out of here."

RE: Questionable Means

Tawny looked over the pile of money and jewelry left on Ishkan's bed, it seemed like so much, but it was no where near enough.

She let out a frustrated growl, absently listening to the sounds of Ishkan starting the shower. What were they going to do? The odds of them evading his men for more than another day - two at most - were astronomical.

Unless they could get off-world soon, they were as good as dead.

Biting back a yawn, Tawny pulled the datapadd into her lap and absently tapped through whatever page it had brought to the front. Mostly sight-seeing information about the beach.

A few seconds later, the screen went black, Tawny's eyebrows furrowed together in annoyance and she lightly smacked the device.

It whirred briefly before a message typed itself on-screen.

>HELLO

Tawny's eyebrows shot upwards.

>HELLO ARE YOU THERE

>TAWNY

>PLEASE RESPOND

A key pad was at the bottom of the touch screen, it was stupid and suicidal, Tawny knew. But...

>who are you

>ARE YOU TAWNY

>yes who are you

>AN OLD FRIEND LETS SAY

>why are you contacting me

>IM TRANSMITTING A LOCATION TO YOUR DATAPADD MEET ME THERE ALONE

Tawny paused. Stupid and suicidal, she repeated to herself, as if doing so would make the words sink in.

>why

>HOWS YOUR EYE

And then the screen flashed before changing to a map, showing a location all the way across the town.

Tawny stared at the screen in silence. What.

She replayed it in her head, analyzing every word until she came up with about a million different ways for the conversation to be interpreted.

It was a trap. It was sincere. She was an idiot. It may be what could save their skin. It was-

Ishkan stepped out of the bathroom, interrupting her thought process. She slid the datapadd under her pillow.

They talked about possible strategy for a little while longer before they both agreed that they could risk a few hours sleep.

Ishkan set the alarm for early and they both lay down on their beds.

She was exhausted, but sleep was kept away from Tawny by the thought of what had happened with the datapadd taunting her.

Finally, after Ishkan's breathing had evened out, she pulled the datapadd from under her pillow, turning it on and bathing her face in the soft flow of the screen. The map was still there. She would have to take a taxi most of the way there...

It was stupid. It was insane...

Tawny bit her lip and made a snap decision.

Getting her coat on as quietly as she could, she snapped her belt into place and slid her backpack on. The keys to the motel in her pocket, and the datapadd under one arm, she slipped out of the motel room and made her way to the street.

RE: Questionable Means

The sound of the door shutting awoke Ishkan. The room was dark and quiet. He reached over and turned on the light in-between the two beds. No one but him was in the room. He was releaved at first, knowing that there wasn't an assassin come to kill him. However comfort feeling quickly left as he realized Tawny was not in the room.

He quickly got up and went to the door, opening it wide. Tawny was walking across the parking lot, perfectly calm. Ishkan started to close the door, but thought better of it and decided to folow her.

After walking for what seemed like forever, Tawny finally came to a stop. She pulled out the datapad and looked at it. Ishkan ducked behind the corner of a building as she turned and looked around.

RE: Questionable Means

Tawny felt chills crawl all over her body as she looked up to the looming warehouse, suddenly feeling very small.

She should go back to the motel before Ishkan woke up, forget all about the message and focus on getting offworld, just being outside made her feel like there were a thousand assassins waiting for her.

Taking a deep breath and gritting her teeth, she pushed the door open with a loud 'CREEEEE-AAaaak' and slowly walked deep into the building until a familiar voice made her stop.

"Hello Tawny."
