Captain Connors fidgeted in his chair, centered in the tight quarters of the command center of the Enforcer interceptor Cavernous Vengeance, a name of which he wasn't a fan. A web of semi-transparent screens was laid out in front of him, each manned by a different specialist. The large forward screen adorning the far wall currently displayed a general report on ship vitals.

"Exiting hyperspace in five... four..." Navigator Siever called out the countdown.
"All specialists on alert," the captain commanded.

On the navigator's "one", the captain felt the telltale sharp vibration of a hyperspace pierce. The forward screen immediately changed to a tactical map of the Mircor system.

Siever called out their position, indicated on the star map by a yellow circle; they were currently passing near one of the uninhabitable planets on the inner rim of the system.

"Picking up an... no, two ion trails, parallel," called out Tactician Mepheles.
"Navigator?" the captain said.
"No travel lanes in these area, sir," answered Siever.
"Good. I want a probe on those trails." Connors commanded.
"Prepping probe... Probe away, standby for scan," Mepheles replied.

The small probe, brimming with the very scanner equipment the Enforcers have deemed "illegal", burst from its magnetic accelerator tube and skimmed through space.

"Whoa, I just picked up a heat signature to the rear. Just a blip," Mepheles reported with some alarm, "Below sublight drive signature. 400 megameters."
"Shields up. Weapons, ready point defense. Mepheles, is that a weapon signature?" the captain shouted.
"Uncertain," Mepheles replied, "I'm not picking up anything else."
"Siever, slight maneuver starboard," the captain said. With the probe lighting up the area with scans, anything he could do to avoid giving away their position was preferrable, but if it was an unguided weapon launch, he didn't want to be sitting where it was aimed when the projectiles showed up.

Ektes Vorning was a tattooed, pierced man--maybe what you'd expect from a lowly space pirate. He watched the scanner transmission from the scout ship floating behind the Enforcer cruiser that had just arrived from hyperspace minutes ago.

"Our very own walking, talking Enforcer playbook," Ektes muttered with a hint of pride, patting the back of the man to his right; Jonathan Rickards was an Enforcer elite who had been around the block a few times, from navigation officer, to cruiser captain, to boarding unit commander... until he decided he needed to make more money. Instead of switching careers fully to a life of piracy, he simply sold his insider knowledge of the Enforcers to pirate crews so they would always stay one step ahead of any lawmen coming their way. In exchange, he took a cut of their booty.

Just as Jonathan had predicted, the Enforcer cruiser had jumped into the system relatively near the star, 45 degrees orbit from the last SOS location.

There was a small pang of guilt, as he knew the pirates would send a few volleys of warheads the way of the Enforcer cruiser as soon as they moved into an effective firing position. Maybe he knew members of this crew back in those days.

But he was a cold man--his Enforcer training had seen to that--and a couple of warm thoughts weren't about to change that. Jonathan turned and headed for the command center door; he didn't need to be there when the Enforcer cruiser turned to space junk.

"I think you can take it from here," he said over his shoulder.
"We'll let you know if we need you again," said Ektes with a small smirk.
