RE: Why do I care?

Richard Pijtes lands hard on his back on the cargo area floor.

Gral: Altaland Security Bureau.
Richard: What?

Gral waves a vial of "Grape Soda" in front of Richard's face. He tries to hide it, but his eyes betray the fact that he recognizes it.

Gral: What the slag is this?! TELL ME!
Richard: It's a biological weapon--some kind of poison or nerve agent or something. I don't really know, I just handle the money!
Sam: ... But the princess is in another castle!
Gral: BULLSLAG! You handle all relations between the Pijtes family and the ASB. Don't screw with me, man. You know it all. You know full-well what this will do to you when I shove it down your throat.

Gral forces the vial of Grape Soda menacingly toward Richard's face, grabbing the seal, ready to twist it loose.

Richard: NO! NO NO!! It'll affect you! It'll affect all of us!
Gral: WHAT IS IT?!
Richard: It's a neurotoxin that destroys all higher-order brain functions, leaving only basic motor skills and the capacity for hunger... insatiable hunger for flesh! Slag--do not open that if you know what's good for you!
Sam: You mean...

Sam twirls the toothpick between his lips.

Sam: ... like zombies? It's a zombie virus?
Richard: Yes! That is exactly what it is!
Sam: Sweet.

Gral gives Sam a Look. He turns back to Richard.

Gral: How do you get in contact with the ASB?
Richard: You don't just contact the agency as a whole. I have a couple contacts within...
Gral: How do I contact them? How are they related?
Richard: One is Leonard Fitz. He is the president of GeoMining, Inc. on Liavor, a cover.
Sam: Been there; done that.
Richard: And there's a suit--I think he works out of the main ASB office and runs the whole op. His name is Peter Lerento. I talk to him mostly.
Gral: How can I talk to him?
Richard: I have a secure phone.

Gral stares at him expectantly.

Richard: ... Not on me.

The cargo ramp suddenly starts moving. Gral turns to it, MK23 trained on the opening already.

Alex is standing there.

Alex: Uh... Hi? Am I interrupting?

Gral scowls and holsters his weapon.

Alex: So what do we know?
Sam: Grape Soda is actually Zombie Juice.
Alex: You're kidding, right?
Sam: No. It makes people all... ungggh....

Sam holds his hands straight out in front of him and shuffles around a bit.

Sam: Braaainsssss...
Alex: Quit pulling my leg. You didn't find out what it is, did you?
Sam: Unless this guy is kidding, IT IS ZOMBIE JUICE!
Alex: Aw, man. When did we become a B-movie?
Stasis

You killed my father.
Big mistake.

RE: Why do I care?

Alex: You guys know we're going to get a scuffle and break the vial and become mindless flesh eaters, right?
Gral: No.
Alex: Oh, okay then.
Gral: You're a freighter. Surely you have something to stabilize fragile objects.
Alex: Well, yeah, I do. And don't call me Sh--

Gral slams Alex into the wall and closes the distance between their respective faces in a time too short for Alex's comfort.

Gral: If you say one more syllable, I will rip your spine out of your neck and wear it on my belt as a trophy. Understand?

Alex believes it, perhaps more than any previous threat to his life. He simply nods. Gral releases him.

Leon: Richard.

Richard looks up at the sound of his name.

Leon: Where is your secure phone?
Richard: It's at my office--
Leon: Good. Take us there.

Richard shrugs.

Richard: Like, walk there? It's, uh, a few miles away...
Leon: Alex. Fly us. Richard will guide you.

He grabs Richard and leads him to the cockpit. Alex catches flies for a second.

Alex: ...Okay.

He follows them to the cockpit and sits down in the pilot seat and switches everything on. A hum resonates through the ship as the engines kick on. He lifts off, above most of the buildings, and comes to a hover.

Richard: Go, uh, north-north-west.

He seems unsure of himself and is looking around the control panel.

Alex: You're thinkin' about pulling something, aren't you?

Richard stares at him harshly.

Richard: Yeah, I'm going to pull something with Schwarzenrussell here ready to blow my brains all over the windshield. No thanks.

Leon smirks. Alex is lucky not to have seen it, as it's pretty disturbing. Richard tries not to think about it.

Alex changes heading and heads in the approximate direction in which Richard pointed.

Richard: It's a...

He sighs, thinking about the details of his funeral and how he never did get around to writing his will.

Richard: A red brick building. Two stories. Across the street from an abandoned shopping center you know what, you fraggers? I won't give up on life. You can ruin me if you want, get a price on my head with the ASB. But I won't give up. I've got a wife and a kid. I've got a DANG lovely wife and a GREAT kid, you understand me? I have too much to live for to let you poopstains take that from me. The world is beautiful, but you sub-humans could never understand that, you just want your money so you can buy your next KILLMASTER rifle and ruin more lives. You are worthless. You are a stain on my white shirt. A momentary inconvenience, but I'll just throw away the shirt and get a new one. I have a great life, and I'll be DANGED if some lowlives like you will take that from me. You can KISS MY BUTT. That's right, YOU CAN KISS MY BUTT.

Alex and Leon are unamused.

Alex: Are you done?
Richard: SLAG YOU!

Alex looks at Leon.

Alex: We're here.

Leon nods and slugs Richard.

RE: Why do I care?

Having pilfered Richard's keys, Alex, Sam, Leon, and Gral wander into the red brick building. The lack of an alarm seems convenient.

The first floor is rather uneventful. Alex and Gral opt to go upstairs while Sam and Leon continue to scour the first floor.

Upstairs, toward the back, is a white door, upon which is a plaque reading "RICHARD PIJTES." Alex looks at Gral, shrugs, and opens the door.

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP

Alex: Oh, poo!

Gral's brow furrows. To the right of Richard's office is an unmarked door, hanging half open. It looks like some kind of supply closet.

He pushes the door open. Inside lies the building's breaker box. He brushes all of the switches to the off position. The alarm falls quiet. He then steps into the office, withdrawing a pair of gloves from his pocket and slipping them on.

Alex: Well, that works.
Gral: No, it doesn't. Hurry.

Gral starts ransacking the room. Inside a desk drawer is a small, black phone. He pockets it and continues searching. Alex sort of shuffles about, unsure where to start.

Gral: What are you doing?
Alex: Uh, I don't know--
Gral: Well, figure it out. We have probably eight minutes before tear gas comes through that window.

He points at the window behind Alex. Alex looks unnerved and gets to work.

Moments later, Gral finds, hidden in the edges of one of the large squares in the patterned carpeting, several slits, allowing the carpet to be pulled back in the middle of the floor. A small safe is recessed in the floor. He squints, thinking.

With long strides, he disappears from the office. Alex stares at the doorway, perplexed, and resumes his search.

Gral gets downstairs and wanders into another office, determining that it is directly under Richard's office. He shouts over his shoulder.

Gral: Leon, find me some kind of saw I can cut wood with. Sam, go look for one in the ship.

He climbs onto a chair and pushes on a ceiling panel. It doesn't seem to want to give, so he pushes harder and it pops loose. He pulls his flashlight from his coat pocket and shines it up into the hollow.

Bingo.

The safe has been screwed into four sloppily installed 2x4s. He would only need to cut out the 2x4s, take the safe with him, and figure out the combination later.

Sam: Gral.

Gral looks down at Sam. Sam is offering him a reciprocating saw.

Gral: Good.

He grabs it and Sam plugs it into the wall outlet. Gral places it against the 2x4 and mashes the trigger.

Nothing happens.

Slag!

Gral: I turned off all the circuit breakers. I need you to run upstairs and put them all back on, fast.

Sam nods and starts to run out.

Gral: Hit the light switch on your way out.

Sam pauses, wondering why, but complies and continues upstairs.

Gral waits, watching the ceiling light.

Waiting. He looks at his watch. It's been six minutes. He grits his teeth.

The light comes on. He mashes the trigger and blazes through the 2x4 like butter. He can't help but smile to himself, and continues the process until the safe drops free onto the rafters.

Gral: Leon, give me a hand.

Leon enters the room and looks up into the ceiling, raising an eyebrow as he wonders exactly what Gral is doing. His question is answered when Gral heaves the safe--roughly cut 2x4s still screwed to it--through the hole in the ceiling and hands it to Leon, stepping off the chair. Sam reappears in the doorway.

Gral: Get Alex. We have to leave.

Sam is feeling bossed around, but complies, running back upstairs. Gral and Leon hurry the safe out to the awaiting Spacehawk. They can hear the approaching police sirens.

As the two large men slam the safe down on the cargo bay floor, Alex runs up the ramp.

Gral: Get us off the ground and as far away from this building as possible.
Leon: ...Where's Sam?
Alex: Uh, getting my saw.

He turns around. Sam is running across the parking lot, green Sawzall in his arms.

Gral: Go!

Alex nods and hurries to the cockpit. Gral hits the ramp button as soon as Sam gets inside.

Sam: So, uh, what's the rush?

Gral silently gestures outside. Sam looks out, then notices the police sirens.

Sam: Oh. Oooohhhh.

The ship lurches hard, lifting off the ground a little too quickly, and blasts off in the opposite direction of the police.

Valerie: The perfect heist.

RE: Why do I care?

Gral drags Richard over to the safe.

Gral: Open that up; tell me what's inside.

Alex fake-yells:

Alex: OH MY GOSH, NINTENevermind.

Richard reaches over and sadly twirls the dial on the safe. After opening the safe door, he pathetically lifts a small telephone out of it.

Gral: This is your secure phone?
Richard: Yes.

Gral nods.

Gral: You're going to call your contact at the Altaland Security Bureau. You're going to tell him that there's an emergency and you need to meet him face to face immediately.
Richard: No, no, we don't meet, even in emergencies.
Gral: What do you do in an emergency?
Alex: Bite down hard on these cyanide tablets.
Richard: Yes.

Alex looks startled.

Gral: But you don't have the guts to do that.
Richard: No.
Gral: How do you exchange money and wares?
Richard: Random drops. At random times, at random places.
Gral: So you drop off some money and we'll wait for someone to pick it up.

Richard shakes his head. He's gotten over the fear and gone on to self-loathing and total compliance. Luckyyyyy...

Richard: Fine...

RE: Why do I care?

LATER.

The steel warehouse door opens. Gral slams it on the entering hand, forcing it to drop the gun. He then grabs the hand, tugs him through the doorway, and throws him to the floor.

Gral: Grape soda. Tell me everything!
Man: I don't know what you're talking abouUOOWWW!

Gral has thrust his knee to the left of the man's spine and twisted his arm around. It pops grotesquely, but Gral knows it has not yet dislocated.

Gral: You're LYING!
Man: Okay! Ahh--I like... I like grape soda! It tastes gooOOOAAUUGHH!

Gral reset his arm and wrenched it again.

Gral: A biological agent that creates zombies. Ring any bells?
Man: Yes, it sounds like this moviIIEEEGGH!
Gral: Cut the bullslag or I break it.
Man: I don't know who you think I am, but I don't know anything about a... a whatever that makes zombies! Seriously!

Gral lets go of his arm and rolls the man over. He then reaches into the man's jacket and begins rummaging around. He pulls out an ID card that appears to also be a key card.

Gral: Altaland Security Bureau. Forget to leave this at home?

Gral grabs the man's hair and points his head at Richard.

Gral: This guy look familiar?
Man: Not in the slightest.
Gral: I doubt it.

He knocks the man's head on the concrete floor.

Gral: Look again. Did I clear your vision?
Man: Wh...what?

Gral rolls him and pulls out his wallet. He looks around it.

Gral: No wife or kids?
Man: Not in there.

Alex: It's like every guy we interrogate has taken training in being a buttmunch.
Sam: There is some serious munching of butts going on here.
Valerie: Grade D butt meat, at that. It's like they have no dignity.

Alex and Sam nod.

Gral rolls the man back over and grabs his shirt collar.

Gral: No more bullnuts. You knew exactly what you were doing here, and exactly who you were meeting. Your organization is handing off bio-engineered viruses to a "terrorist" group who is just your well-concealed subsidiary to do your dirty business where you can't just conduct black ops with your own agents. Like releasing said bio-engineered virus in a place called Iresa, Micc to see how it goes, a place that I happen to like. Got anything to say before I kill you and take down your company?
Man: This is... the butthecking government. You can't touch anyone.
Gral: I'm touching you right now.
Man: I'm just... a pawn--

Gral laughs as he slams the man's head into the floor, knocking him out cold.

And he keeps laughing. Real laughing. Like tickled pink amused laughing as he lifts the man over his shoulder.

Gral: A pawn. Heh. Heh heh.

He keeps chuckling to himself as he walks to the door of the warehouse and exits.

Sam: I guess we should follow him.

They all return to Alex's ship.

RE: Why do I care?

Gral: Peter Lerento.

The man spits at Gral. He receives a knuckle sandwich for his efforts.

Gral: Where can I find him? Tell me now and you're free to go. Simple as that.

Alex and Sam stand nearby watching.

Alex: These interrogations are getting a wee bit old by now.
Sam: Indeed. Where did that red-headed chick and her uncle go?
Alex: Supper. I'm thinking I should've gone.

His stomach is audible over the sound of knuckles meeting jaw bone.

---

Elsewhere, Valerie and Frank are pushing their way through a crowded sidewalk looking for an eating establishment.

Frank: So, what're you in the mood for, Val?
Valerie: I don't know... It doesn't look like we have room to be picky though. I don't see anything.

Frank gets separated from Valerie by a couple of burly men who walk by. The crowd spills in to fill the gaps between them, making Frank fall behind and lose sight of Valerie. He begins politely--as much as he can--pushing them aside to try to reach Valerie. He brushes past a black-haired woman in tight leather pants.

Black-haired woman in tight leather pants!

His blood runs cold as he feels someone grasp his shoulder.

Frank: Don't kill me!!
Amber: Should've kept your mouth shut, baby.

He feels a sharp pain in his lower back. His vision goes white and he loses hearing. He feels himself falling to the ground in slow-motion. He is now lying on his back looking up at the ever-darkening sky and the faces of people in the crowd moving briskly past. He manages to groan a "help".

A bypasser finally notices him lying on the sidewalk and lets out a shriek.

Valerie turns to the sound. She realizes Frank isn't behind her. Feeling panic rise, she rushes toward the group of people standing in a circle. She breaks through and sees Frank lying on the sidewalk in a puddle of blood. His eyes are open but he's just shaking his head and mumbling something incoherent. She turns him over to see the knife wound in his lower back.

Valerie: Slag it...

She looks up at the people just standing around staring. She explodes.

Valerie: Has anyone called a medic?!

A few people suddenly break out telephones and dial the local emergency services number.

---

Down the street, Sam and Alex take notice of the huge crowd of people standing around an ambulance. Sam then takes notice of Valerie's hair.

Sam: That's Valerie over there. I know that flaming, red hair anywhere!

They head over to see what's occurring. She looks up at them. The paramedics lift Frank up into the vehicle.

Valerie: Guys.
Alex: What's up?
Valerie: Someone stabbed Frank.

Alex and Sam scowl simultaneously.

Alex: Do you know who?
Valerie: No. We got separated, so I wasn't near him. I tried asking him, but he's not answering. He's delerious. But I don't think it was a random mugging; he's still got his wallet and watch on him.
Alex: Dangit. That's the last time I let you leave the ship. You're grounded for a month.

Valerie ignores his stupidity and climbs into the ambulance.

Valerie: I'll see you later.

It takes off down the road, sirens blaring.

Alex: ... Gee-whiz.

Sam switches his toothpick to the other side and chews.

---

Later, Alex and Sam are dining on double-decker cheeseburgers with everything on them in a fast food restaurant that was entirely too much trouble to find. The place is pretty dead. They're the only ones here beside the pimply-faced kid working the register and doing the cooking.

Sam: I know who stabbed Frank.

Alex takes another enormous bite of his sandwich.

Alex: Whomf?
Sam: That knife-wielding, magical stripper-assassin from Perrenor.

Alex scowls.

Alex: Here? How would she have found us here?
Sam: Any number of ways. It's not like we haven't already kidnapped two big-time mobsters in the past two days.

Alex chomps again and nods.

Alex: True.

He stuffs a couple fries in with his last gulp of cheeseburger with everything.

Alex: But to find him in a crowd on some random street in Downtown Yoakam?
Sam: "Magical".

Alex rolls his eyes. No sooner does he finish doing so that the lights go out.

Sam: Uhh...

He looks outside and sees other buildings with their lights on. He can also hear the hum of refrigerators and other equipment coming from the kitchen.

Sam: Hey, Freddy, you okay back there? Slip on some lard?

Nobody responds.

Alex: Okay, I'm scared now.

Sam can hear the sound of Alex's Five-Seven clearing leather. Sam takes a cue from him and draws his Lern 42. They both get up from the table and head toward the door.

Sam: Hey, we're outta here. Good luck with the lights.

He pushes on the door, but it doesn't move.

Sam: What the? It's locked.

Alex levels his pistol with the lock.

Alex: Not for long.

Sam looks past Alex and sees a silhouette behind him.

Sam: Cripes!

He fires his Lern 42 past Alex, startling him. The muzzle blast lights up the immediate area to see that the silhouette is Amber. She uses one of her blades to absorb the blast. Alex swings around.

Alex: You!
Sam: I hate being right!

Alex tries to get a shot off at her, but she knocks the gun aside with a blade, marring the finish. This angers Alex considerably. He aims it at her again, but this time she knocks it from his grasp. It clatters to the tile floor.

It is eerie. In the darkness, which does not seem to affect her mobility, she is merely a silent, pointy silhouette. Not even the sound of breathing.

Sam: Alex! Move!

Alex ducks to the side and gets behind a table. Sam opens up with his pistol, but Amber's blades deflect or absorb the blasts effortlessly.

Sam: This is ridiculous!

Alex crawls to his pistol, grabs it, and shoots out a window. He tosses a chair through to clear it out and he jumps through. Sam follows quickly behind.

The restaurant is in a slummier, deader part of town. Dogs can be heard barking annoyingly in the distance. A poodle can be heard responding.

Alex: How do we stop her?
Sam: Grenade?
Alex: Got one?
Sam: No...

They continue backing toward the street, weapons pointed toward the restaurant. There is no movement. Nothing. Not even a moth fluttering around a street light.

Alex: She can teleport. I'd bet she's right behind us.

He tenses up as someone grabs his shoulder. A female voice whispers in his ear.

Amber: I'd bet you're right.

Alex prepares for his death.

Sam lets out a screeching warcry as he roundhouse kicks her in the head.

He manages to knock Alex sideways as well.

Alex goes reeling into a brick wall while Amber hits the ground lightly and springs back to her feet, short blades at the ready.

Sam grabs a rusty, solid steel bar lying nearby and adopts some kind of awkward hand-to-hand combat stance.

Sam: Bring it on, baby!

Amber smiles in mocking amusement. She moves toward him, blades swinging through the air, leaving no safe opening for Sam. Sam's eyes dart around wildly, trying to follow the knives. He grits his teeth and swings the bar. It clashes with a knife and bounces off with enough force to knock him backward.

Dang, she's strong!

He regains his footing and swings low this time. She parries.

Alex is lying up against the wall, rubbing his head and moaning. After his vision clears enough, he brings his Five-Seven to bear on Amber and fires. The bullet is deflected effortlessly once more.

Alex: Dangit!

Tired of playing, Amber decides to put the pressure on Sam. Her blades swing ever closer. He does his best to block them with his trusty, rusty bar. One swings right over his head, shaving some of his already-shaved hair off.

He turns and runs to try to gain some distance, but she appears right in front of him. He barely manages to parry.

With a roar, he swings the pipe laterally, making contact with a knife, snapping the blade right in half. She parries subsequent swings with her remaining blade and half-heartedly tosses the broken one toward Alex. It hits the bricks right above his head and bounces off with a spark.

This wakes Alex up. He jumps to his feet, body pumping dangerous levels of adrenaline into his blood, and bum-rushes Amber. He jumps onto her back before she can draw a replacement weapon from her belt and gets her into a rear naked choke.

He's got the hooks in!!

IT'S TIGHT!!!!

She falls backward onto him. He ignores the pain of the concrete ground he just slammed into. He pulls it tighter until she goes to sleep.

He pushes her off to the side and stands up, brushing himself off and rubbing his damaged back.

Sam: Nice work.

Alex cringes.

Alex: Thanks.

He unbuckles her weapon belt and takes it off her. He tosses it to Sam who slings it over his shoulder. He searches her for hidden weapons.

Sam: What do we do with her?

Alex shrugs.

Alex: I guess take her back to the ship. We mustn't let Gaston get bored!

Sam groans.

Sam: More interrogations...

RE: Why do I care?

Sam--having been forced to carry her by a jibblified Alex--sets the bound stripper-assassin on the floor next to the rest of their collection; Richard Pijtes and the agent from the warehouse, the latter being out like a light and heavily bruised.

Gral: Ugh. What now?
Sam: The magic stripper-assassin from Perrenor heard such great things about Alex, she just had to meet him.
Alex: If she twitches, KILL HER WITH FIRE.
Gral: Why'd you bring her here?
Alex: Uh, I don't know.
Gral: Why didn't you just kill her?

Alex points at Sam as if to tell Gral to ask him.

Sam: I wasn't about to kill an unconscious woman.
Gral: Why?

Sam raises an eyebrow.

Sam: Uh, because... that's... not... uh... fair?
Gral: One forfeits his right to fairness when he tries to kill you. Whatever.

He unholsters his MK23.

Alex: Uh, well, I think she's in on this thing... hence the whole trying to kill us... so she might know something about Peter Lerento?

Gral nods and moves toward her.

Alex: It teleports. Don't give that thing any slack. NO MERCY.

Gral pushes the threaded barrel of the MK23 into the side of Amber's neck, toward the back, grabs her shoulder, and gives her a good shake until she begins to stir.

Gral: Can you hear me?

Amber looks at him, jaw slack. She's still a bit out of it.

Gral: Can you hear me?

Amber blinks and then erupts, still in the fight from about ten minutes ago. Gral grabs her throat.

Gral: SIDDOWN, RALPH.

Everything stops. Gral's facial expression becomes grim.

He punches himself, then gets up and punches Alex. Alex falls to his butt, looking bewildered. Gral crouches by Amber again and adopts his original position.

Gral: What do you know about Peter Lerento?
Amber: ... Who the heck is that?
Gral: Altaland Security Bureau. Head of the grape soda project.
Amber: I'm a frickin' stripper... I don't know anything about that.

Sam holds up a finger.

Sam: Magical assassin stripper.
Alex: Details. I've got another question. You tried to kill both of us. Why?
Amber: I...

She sees her knife belt still over Sam's shoulder.

Amber: They tell me who to whack and I do it.
Alex: ... I kind of doubt that, considering everybody that would know who we are is right here.

He gestures at Richard and a thumping wooden crate next to him.

Amber glares at him. Footsteps. Heads turn to see Valerie on the loading ramp.

Valerie: ... You!

Valerie violently rips Susan from her sheath and takes a step toward Amber.

Valerie: You tried to kill Frank, didn't you?!
Amber: How's he doing?

Valerie is hesitant to lunge in and cut her heart out, as it appears Gral was interrogating her.

Valerie: He's doing fine, actually.

She sneers.

Valerie: You're some shoddy assassin, considering you can't even kill one old man in an ambush.
Amber: Give me a break, it was a big crowd. It's hard to kill a guy without anyone noticing!
Gral: Enough. You know something about Peter Lerento and I will start breaking bones until you tell me.
Amber: No, only the Pijtes family. I don't even know what the Altaland Security Bureau is.
Gral: Why did you try to kill Frank Palatoni?
Amber: He talked too much.
Gral: About what?
Amber: About Buddy Pijtes!
Gral: Why did you need to keep him quiet about a little piece of slag like Buddy?

The thumping from the crate gets louder.

Amber: Because... he doesn't... like... umm...
Gral: Weak.

He grabs her hand and prepares to snap her finger when she vanishes.

The zip ties hit the floor. Sam yelps.

Sam: The, uh, belt thing is gone!

They hear whooshing. A metal clang. They look. Valerie and Amber are in a mad frenzy with their respective bladed weapons.

Amber: After I take care of you, I'll go finish off your uncle!

In a whirl of clanking steel, Valerie backs Amber out of the ship. Every single person in the ship is trying to get a shot off, but Valerie is far too close for them to shoot Amber.

In a fluid motion, she hurls her trenchcoat off and draws her other butterfly sword. Amber somehow begins to fight with three large knives, juggling one of them while using the other two. It's showy and completely useless.

So she's not sure what really happened when her right forearm hit the ground, messing up her juggle and dropping two of the knives. Screaming in pain and vision going white, she blocks a few more blows from the daggers, but Valerie soon separates her left hand as well and clotheslines her, sending her to the ground.

Amber screams pathetically. Valerie stands over her.

Valerie: Not going to last much longer.

Amber is already hoarse.

Amber: H-help...!
Valerie: Uh-huh.
Amber: Please, help...!

She looks desperately toward the rest of the crew standing in the doorway of the Spacehawk. Alex, unable to watch, had left. The rest stood there silently.

Valerie: Tell us anything you know right now, and you get help!
Amber: I've... never... met... Peter... I've heard people... talking... about "grape soda..." A lab in Hilo... They told me... kill... anyone... that talks about it... Please...

Valerie nods.

Valerie: Here's your help.

HEADSHOT

Valerie grabs her coat and returns to the ship. She looks at Gral.

Valerie: You heard all that?

Gral nods.

Valerie: You want to ask any of these guys if it's true or whatever?

Gral heads over to the agent from the warehouse.

Gral: Where was grape soda created?
Agent: I don't know.

He is hit by a hand. The hand happens to not be attached to anything.

Agent: Cheese!

Gral nods at Valerie, picks up the hand, and holds it before the agent.

Gral: Where?
Agent: What the... fruit... did you do?!
Valerie: The stripper wasn't being very friendly. I can go get her head if you like.
Agent: Ugh, no!

The room falls silent. Gral is trying to figure out what to do from here.

Gral: Still don't know?
Agent: ... No.

Gral nods.

------

The Spacehawk lands. There is sand.

Just sand.

The engines shut down before the loading ramp opens to keep dust to a minimum. Gral drags the agent out, throws him at the ground, heads back into the ship, and closes the ramp.

Agent: What?! What are you doing?!!

Sam: ... Is that really necessary? He didn't really... do anything.
Alex: Other than act like a butthole. But Hilo is about a mile northwest of here. He doesn't know that. We'll go get him in a little while.

RE: Why do I care?

(Continued from...)

Leon and Fate re-enter the computer room of the lab to meet up with the rest.

Leon: We've found the Mother Lode. Take a look at this.

The others follow him into an adjacent room. It is brightly-lit in typical Hollywood lab fashion and contains glass racks of vials and vials of Grape Soda.

Sam: Jackpot.

Gral pulls a block of some obscure type of plastic explosive from a pack hidden beneath his trench coat. He sets it up in the middle of the room.

Gral: Let's finish this.
Alex: You have a remote detonator, right? We're not going to set a timer for 2 minutes and then get hung up in a battle with a slagload of buttholes with rifles on our way out, right?

Gral looks at him sternly. He blinks a couple times too.

Alex: I take it you have a remote detonator.
Gral: Yes.
Alex: All's well in Grapeland. Let's get the crud out of here.

He about-faces and heads out. The rest follow close behind.

Alex: Oh.

There are about twelve guys dressed entirely in black sporting body armor and MP5A5s.

High-Speed Operator: Get your hands on your head! NOW!

Alex shrugs.

Alex: Well, guys, looks like they outnumber us 2 to 1. Better give--

Gral is leaping over desks and firing his MK23 at them.

Alex: --up... Slag.

The rest dive to the opposite side of the room from Gral. The operators are shredding desks and assorted computer components as they get a bead on Gral. Gral's .45 lands on a few of them, but only their armor. Their shots land on Gral, but only his armor.

Alex: Dudes! Listen! We're blowing up some...

He trails off as he realizes no one can hear him over 12 MP5s blazing away in a somewhat small room.

Gral lands on his side behind another desk. It is soon hit with tons of 9mm. He hits the detonator on his remote. The room full of Grape Soda explodes, bulging the walls outward.

Alex: CRIPES! HE BLEW IT! HE BLEW IT!

The explosion takes the operators by surprise. Gral leaps on the nearest one and wrestles his MP5 away. He then escapes up the stairs toward the exit. A few follow him. The one who lost his MP5 draws his sidearm and trains it on the rest of the group, who promptly put their hands on their heads once six more operators train their weapons on them.

Alex: Leon, don't get us killed.
Leon: I'm not that stupid.
Valerie: This is unfavorable.
High-Speed Operator: Shut up and get on your knees!

He SWAT-walks over to them, followed by the others. They cover him as he pulls out cuffs. A couple others proceed with making arrests as well.

---

Outside, the rest of the operators bust open the door and Gral is nowhere to be seen. They check the roof of the lab and nearby buildings. Nothing.

One operator grabs his radio.

High-Speed Operator: Sir, one escaped, but we have the others in custody. He managed to acquire one of our weapons, so consider him well-armed and extremely dangerous.

After that, notifications undoubtedly went out to all local police departments that a lone "terrorist" escaped from a police raid and is on the loose, armed and dangerous. Gral is in for a fun weekend, unless he manages to get off-world soon, which he probably will and disappear for a good while.

Alex: I want my lawyer!
High-Speed Operator: Shut up. We're not police. You don't get a lawyer.

Alex is then plunged into darkness as his head is sacked.

Sam: This can't be good.

He is sacked as well.

RE: Why do I care?

Alex and Sam are shoved into a cold, gray cell, the bars slammed shut behind them. Likewise, the others are divided into their own cells.

Alex and Sam sit.

They sigh.

Alex shifts.

Alex: My butt's falling asleep.
Sam: I didn't want to know that.
Alex: Well, you know it.
Sam: But I didn't want to know it.
Alex: Too bad.
Sam: Fine!
Alex: FINE!

The bars open.

Guard: You're free to go. Looks like you have some good friends in the TCF.
Sam: What.
Alex: What.

They smile, their teeth clacking as they do. They step out happily.

Sam: Gosh, I want a candy bar.
Alex: I want some Girl Scout cookies.
Sam: Good, more candy bars for me.

They leave and find that Alex's ship had been impounded. Fighting the urge to blast the impound officer in the face with a gun he doesn't actually have, Alex begrudgingly pays the people that imprisoned him a hundred tape to get his ship back.

A minute after boarding the ship, a few men carry a heavy box full of pistols and other equipment into the ship.

Man: If we ever see you again, things won't be as easy. Get out of here.
Alex: Gladly.

They leave and set a course for Jorgenson Ship Dealers, not really caring why the TCF bothered to go through the hoops to negotiate their release.
