RE: The Reckoning

Szyren smiles gleefully throughout the whole discourse.

Szyren: So tell us the details and we'll be on our way.

The pirate produces a pen and begins to scribble instructions on a napkin.  Szyren clears her throat as though she's going to say something, but the pirate holds up his free hand and continues to write, so Szyren bites her tongue... again.

After a minute the pirate folds the napkin and slides it across the table.

Pirate: There be all you need to know.

Szyren takes it and begins to open it, but the pirate stops her.  She is getting very tired of the pirate stopping her from doing something.

Pirate: Don't be opening that until after ye've left.  Bunch of scallywags in here--

The pirate waves over a serving wench and places an order for another tankard.

Pirate: --So get ye gone!

Szyren jumps out of her seat and flies out the door, dragging Neil along behind her.

RE: The Reckoning

Neil is dragged forcefully out of the pub. He breaks her grasp outside.

Neil: So I guess we have information on finding this guy's ship.

He rubs his chin.

Neil: Well, we need to go back to Jennings. You go to docking bay 94 at the spaceport and wait for me. I'll go waste Kyzer and we'll be out of here.

His phone rings. He answers.

Neil: Boomhouse?
Christie: Great work, Neil. I've wired the money from the bounties to your account.
Neil: ... Pardon?
Christie: I said I wired—
Neil: No, when did I... Oh. Nevermind. Thanks.
Christie: ... You're welcome. Goodbye.
Neil: ... Yeah.

He hangs up, staring emptily into the distance.

Neil: Well, that's taken care of. Let's go find buried treasure. Hopefully it's rum.

RE: The Reckoning

Szyren wonders how in heck he got his phone back from her without her knowing.  Though, she wasn't paying him much attention while she was dealing with the pirate, so she figures that's when he did it.

While he's talking, she unfolds the napkin and quickly memorizes its content.  There isn't much, but she understands why the pirate didn't want her to open it inside the pub.  She folds it up again and shoves it in the pocket of her pants.

She looks up at Neil and does a little dance.

Szyren: Hurrah to rum, but what happened to wasting Kyzer?

RE: The Reckoning

Neil: Apparently he aggroed a deep crow and got pwned. No effort required.

He puts his phone back in her pocket and starts off down the road to the tube station, since it turned out their taxi trip was a huge waste because the pub was only like three blocks away.

Neil: So, if we take the tubes back, you won't get lupus, will you? Or amyloidosis or an autoimmune disease or something?

He takes a breath.

Neil: Let me try that again. Are you going to freak out again?

RE: The Reckoning

Szyren mouths an "oh" to the demise of Kyzer and pats the phone in her pocket protectively after he places it there.

At the mere mention of the tubes, she bursts into another fit of giggles, though this one is much more controlled than the previous.

Szyren: No! I'll be okay.

It's hardly convincing, though.

Before he can say anything about it, she flits down into the tunnels, her laughter echoing all the way up the stairs.

There isn't a very long line, and the tube operator, who is now a different Jeeves, watches her with concern as she fits herself into the tube, still bubbling.

Szyren: Flush me away, Jeevesy!

Seconds later she is being pulled out of the tube again, back where she started, and she goes into the corner to wait for her stomach to recover her again.

RE: The Reckoning

Neil follows through the tube like a normal person, not quite feeling up to heckling Jeeves for a technologically advanced Slip-n-Slide, and finds Szyren off to the side, busting a gut.

Neil: That's right. Just let it all out.

He looks off into nowhere, wondering how anybody else found out about Kyzer's death before him. He checks his watch. Not April 1st—at least, not where he was when he set the watch. He continues to ponder until Szyren gets over it.

Neil: Well, starport's not far off. You fly, I'll sleep for a long time.

RE: The Reckoning

Szyren's stomach doesn't even have to bother catching up to her.  When Neil suggests that Szyren fly, that's all the sobering up she needs.

Szyren: Oooh... Neil. I don't think that's a good idea.  Did I ever tell you the story of how I got here in the first place?  Don't you know me well enough by now to not trust me at the helm of a ship?  Though, I've only blown up one building so far...

She pauses to collect her thoughts.

Szyren: You know, I don't even think I can get into the starport without getting in trouble... I need a disguise!  Do you have a wig or something I could borrow?  Maybe a barrel I could hide in?  I bet I could fit in your duffle bag, though I bet I'd need another shower afterwards... It's a chance I'm willing to take though.

She quickly tucks all her hair up under the bandana.

Szyren: I mean, I'll fly, but if I blow the ship up, you can't blame me.

She puts two and two together.

Szyren: You have a ship??  That's brilliant!

RE: The Reckoning

He bares his teeth.

He blinks.

He grits his teeth and blinks again.

Neil: Okay.

Long pause.

Neil: I have a plan.

He starts to wander off into the streets, looking around carefully.

Neil: Tell me if you see any hobos.

With no idea if Szyren is even following him, and therefore nearby to hear his request to inform him of hobos, he spots one and meanders over to him.

Neil: Excuse me.

The hobo looks up from under his newspaper.

Neil: Do you have a cardboard box?
Hobo: If I had one of those, would I be sleeping under newspaper?
Neil: Why are you sleeping under newspaper? It's not cold and there's no rain.
Hobo: Because I'm a hobo.
Neil: Yes, perfect logic. Do you have any hobo friends?
Hobo: Who the heck are you? Go away.
Neil: Yes sir.

He walks over to the nearby dumpster, opens it, and pulls out a large, flattened cardboard box, upon which is written "THE ORANGE." He walks off with it, giving a friendly wave to the hobo, and proceeding to unfold the box. He returns to Szyren.

Neil: If you don't have any tape, I will be sorely disappointed in you, padawan.

He stops abruptly.

Neil: Adhesive strip, not money. You see, I need some way to bond the flaps of this cardboard box together so as to make an awesome disguise.

RE: The Reckoning

Szyren watches him walk away, and as he seems to be taking care of his own hobo needs, she feels no need to tell him that she's found a hobo.

He comes back and asks her for tape, and she's already pieced together some of his plot.  She plants her backpack down on the ground in front of her and begins to rummage through it, her tongue lolling out of her mouth rather like a dog.

At long last she pulls out a roll of purple duct-tape and waves it in the air triumphantly.  Her tongue returns to the inside of her mouth and she chews on it expectantly, waiting to see what Neil will do with it and his new-found box friend.

RE: The Reckoning

Neil quite eagerly takes the tape—almost frighteningly too eagerly—and goes at the box.

It seems to take him far too long to tape up one end of a simple cardboard box, but he seems fairly excited about doing so.

When he is finally done, he places the box on top of Szyren's head.

Neil: ... Tada!

He lets it sink in.

Neil: ... You... you kind of have to crouch down. Hide in it. I mean... nobody will care about a cardboard box sitting around, right? Just sort of sneak around when no one's looking. It'll be fine.
