RE: The Reckoning

Szyren's just started to take a nap when Neil comes out of the cockpit looking determined.  She props herself up on her elbows and yawns dramatically.

Szyren: I know plenty about Wist.  What is it that you wanted to know about?  The nice vacation spots?  The fantastic scenery?  The best places to get your picture taken with giant man eating worms?  Personally, I'm rather fond of the Ripping Day Mausoleum, I've heard there are very detailed death murals on the walls, and the architectural design is genius.

She trails off and watches a piece of fluff wafting about.  She appreciates that now Neil is showing an appropriate amount of interest now.

Szyren: So how close are we?  Do you have your tourist shorts ready?

RE: The Reckoning

Neil: If it's such a great vacation spot with your man-eating worms and everything why does the Hyperspace Whoosiwhatsit say don't go there? Like it's dangerous or something!

He is visibly very tense.

Neil: This... it... This better be really good!

He stomps off to the cockpit mumbling something about at least getting a picture with man-eating worms.

RE: The Reckoning

Neil seems to have missed her dripping sarcasm, so Szyren plops her head back on the pillow and decides she had better catch up on her sleep now, since it's unlikely she'll get any later.

She feels slightly guilty that Neil isn't getting to sleep though.

Suddenly her sense of guilt has overriden her tiredness so she hauls herself out of the bed and goes to the cockpit.

Szyren: Hey... you should sleep.  I'll stay here and keep an eye on things.  I know enough to keep us on course and all that jazz.  If anything important happens between now and when we get there, I'll probably have to wake you up.  For sure when we've arrived, though.  How long will it take, do you think?

Before she came in she had gotten herself a drink, and now she pops the top and takes a sip.

RE: The Reckoning

Neil sits and thinks if it would be wise. His eyes flutter closed and he begins to slump forward. He jerks back up.

It would be wise.

Neil: ... Okay!

He gets up and curls up on the floor behind the seat, ignoring the perfectly good bed, and rests his head on his hands.

A moment later he remembers she asked a question. He tries to remember what it was. It certainly wasn't if she could have that drink, but he decides he doesn't care.

Oh! It was how long it would be.

Neil: I don't know, ask the computer. It's smarter than me.

He closes his eyes and lies quietly on the cold floor.

RE: The Reckoning

Szyren takes a seat at the helm of the ship and thinks of it that way just because she's always wanted to, even if it's not technically correct.  She takes Neil's advice to ask the computer how long it will take for them to get to Wist.  She begins by engaging it in the following conversation.

Szyren: Computer--
Computer: You are not Neil.
Szyren: Yes, I know.
Computer: State you're name.
Szyren: Szyren
Computer: State your relationship to Neil Castle.
Szyren: ...I'm his friend.
Computer: Calculating probability... Probability Zero.  Neil Castle has no friends.
Szyren: Oh. Okay, I'm his acquaintance.
Computer: Calculating probability... Probability 5%.
Szyren: Why only 5%?
Computer: 95% of Neil Castle's acquaintances are deceased.
Szyren: Well, I'm his new acquaintance.  I met him on Perrenor.

Szyren swears she hear's the computer laugh and mutter something sounding a lot like 'That figures'.

Szyren: Computer--
Computer: Yes.
Szyren: How long till we reach Wist?
Computer: Approximately 8.5 hours.

Szyren figures that that is much too long a time to be wasting on a ship such as this that has a snappy computer and a very tangy smell.

RE: The Reckoning

Neil lifts his head and looks quizzically around the seat, toward the computer, wondering when the heck it learned to talk. It comes as no surprise that it's talking smack about him behind his back, but it used to just do that in text.

It would be having a meeting with one of his few friends—"Long Format"—in the morning.

Neil reaches for the corner of a blanket sitting on the floor. Just out of reach. He groans and rolls over onto his back.

Neil: So... Who's the guy you're looking for? The one that got kidnapped by pirates?

RE: The Reckoning

Little did Neil know that Szyren had been reading the whole conversation out loud, alternating between her own voice and her best impression of a computer voice, just to throw him off.  She holds her finger up to her lips and makes a shushing sound when Neil starts rolling around on the floor.

It takes her a moment to figure out what he's after, but she does eventually.  Then she scoops the blanket up, steps over him, fetches the pillow from his bed, and drops it all on his head before sitting back in his seat and reclining it.  Her boots find themselves propped up on the console, she's rather comfortable.

Szyren: He was just a pilot.  He took me in after I got kicked out of my house and showed me around space for a year.  He tried to teach me to fly, but it didn't work very well.  I mean, I can do the basic stuff, so he didn't fail completely...

She takes another sip from her drink and reflects as the carbonation fizzles in her mouth and burns its way down her throat.

Szyren: I was only 15 at the time, but he made a big impact on me.  He was the first truly adventurous, honest person I'd ever met.  He loved everyone on his crew, he helped everyone... he really helped me.  I had a lot of problems then.

It dawns on her that when Neil asked he was probably only asking out of polite curiosity, and she must be boring him by now, rambling on.

Szyren: Well anyway, he called himself Starch.  He never told me his real name.  Then we were attacked by pirates, and four years later, here I am.

((I guess the next postagings should happen over on the Wist board?))

RE: The Reckoning

Neil's muffled "thank you" comes from under the blanket and pillow. While listening to Szyren's explanation, he rearranges the blanket under his head and the pillow on his torso.

He switches it around when he can't get enough surface area out of the pillow.

Neil: Well then,

He speaks groggily and yawns before continuing.

Neil: I suppose you've got good reason for all this.

He closes his eyes and makes a final tug at the covers to get comfortable on his steel bed.

Neil: G'night.
